Alured Popple, Governor of Bermuda

Att Council holden at the house of his Excellency the Govr by adjournment on Thursday the 10th day of August 1738.

His Excellency Alured Popple Governour and the same meebers as yesterday.

Col. Nath Butterfield was this day appointed by his Excellency the publick Treasurer for these Islands.

The petition of Jane Harris yesterday ordered by this board for their consideration was returned it having been rejected for not being properly directed to that house it was therefore ordered by this Board that Rivchard Hunt and William Riddell Esqrs Justices of the Peace do examine the said peition and fully determine the matter in dispute between the petitioner and William Gillingham.

Soon after the vote of the house was presented to this Board by three members thereof, impowering the publick Treasurer of these Islands to sell a Negro man belonging to the Government called Dick and with the produce of such Negro added to the sum of seventeen pounds, the value of Cato a Negro boy in England, to purchase two other negroes for the service of his Excellency the Governor for the time being. I for concurrence which was accordingly concurred too.

Three members of the house of Assembly attending presented to the Board an act intituled "an Act for making an addition to the sallary of His Excellency Alured Popple Esq, Governour of these Islands and for raising a fund for the defraying the same" for concurrence which was considered of; it was ordered that the Clk. of this Board wait on the house and desire a committee of this board immediately at the house of Mr John Slater in St Georges in order to have conference concerning the above said act which was accordingly done.

Then three other members of the house came and presented to this Board a note of their house for allowing his present Excellency Allured Popple Esq Governor the sum of one hundred pounds Curt. money annually during the time of his Government for the concurrence of which being read and considered of it was agreed that upon a meeting of the committees last before mentioned they could also hold a conference, concerning the said vote. Col. Francis Jones, Col. John Butterfield, and Robert Dinwiddie Esq are appointed a committee of this Board for the purpose last mentioned.

The two committees meeting according to appointment did agree to the following alteration in the before mentioned Act (vizt) that the sum therein mentioned, should by the Collector be paid to Nathaniel Butterfield Esq Treasurer of these Islands and the vote was returned to the house not concurr'd too.

Ordered by this Board that the Gunner of the parade for the time being as often as the flagge thereof is loared, the same put into a callico bagg already made for that purpose and delivered tot he care and keeping of the storekeeper for the time being.

Adjourned for the afternoon.

Eodem Die. In the aternoon present the same members as in the forenoon. Three members of the house of Asembly attending presented to the Board two acts the one intitled "An Act for the making an addition to the sallary of His Excellency Alured Popple Esq Governor of these Islands and for raising a fund for the defraying of the same" and the other "an Act for allowing and paying yearly one hundred pounds current money to His Excellency Alured Popple Esq Governor and Commander in Chief of these islands" for concurrence which was concurred to and ordered to be returned to the house which being accordingly done His Excellency returned thanks to this Board for their chearful concurrence to the sevrl. Acts relating to his settlement.

Three members of the House of Assembly now attending this Board and presented thereto an act intitled "An Act for raising the currency of all foreign gold and silver in these Islands in order for the incouragement of the importation of money and for the further and better support of the Government for concurrence which act being read was not concurr'd too by the Council and ordered by them that it be returned to the house by the Clk. of this board which was accordingly done.

Three members of the House attending presented to the Board a note of their House empowering Mr Noden, the country's agent, to receive from Birgdr Armstrong the value of the two brass gunns sent from these islands by the late Governour Pitt also the Clk. of Assembly and door keepers bills for the concurrence which was concurred too, the vote ordered to lodge with the Board till such time as a conference can be held thereon by a committee of both Houses, whereupon the Clk. was ordered to wait on the House and desire that a committee thereof may be appointed to meet a committee of this Board at the house of Mr John Slater at Saint Georges.

Three members of the House of Assembly attending presents to this Board a note appointing James Jauncey Esq to repair Somersetts Bridge for the concurrence which was concurred to accordingly.

August 11th 1738

Att a meeting of a committee of both Houses the day appointed for the holding a conference at the house of Mr John Slater in St Georges concerning the receiving from Brgd. Armstrong the money arising by the brass gunns that were lately sent to England by the late Governour Pitt.

Agreed upon by the Joint Committee of both houses that a vote of the House be made desiring His Excellency the Governour to write a letter to Brigdr. Armstrong in behalf of the country, therein desiring him to settle the accounts of the brass gunns sent to England as above, and the produce thereof to pay into the hands of Mr Ralph Noden of London Mercht. who is the present Agent for the Country.

Three members of the house attending this Board, present thereto two notes, the one for Nathaniel Butterfield Esq Treasurer to stopp in his hands the sume of seventeen pounds current money being the vallue of a Negro boy called Cato, carried off these Islands by the said Governour Pitt for concurrence and the other, that his Excellency be requested to write a letter to Bridg. Armstrongs persuant to the conference last before recited. The first concurred too, the latter agreed too by the Governor, who was also requested by this Board to write such letter. It being this day desired by the House of His Excellency in Council that they were adjourned accordingly.

Ordered that the Provost Marshall put Mr James Rivers into possession of the Island that his late brother Benjamin Rivers now decd. rented in the Great Sound at the rent it was last late.
