Minutes of HM Council: Monday 8 June 1696

Att a Council table holden at the Sessions House in St Georges on Monday the Eighth day of June in the yeare of our Lord 1696.

Present:

Ordered that the respective Justices of the peace of the respective Tribes and Parrish in these islands do take care that the Inhabitants of each Tribe and Parrish in Proportion do by or before the 25th instant raise and bring to the Kings Castle in these Islands 250 Good Sufficient & Substantiall Stones of these dimensions Vizt of 12 inches broad, 9 inches and 7 inches broad (a third of each) Not less in length then 18 inches And that op giveing in their notes under the respective hands of the Justices. They the said Inhabitants shall be fully paid & sattisfied for their so doing.

Also ordered that on the discourse of the Ffrench (The Publick Enemys threatening to make some attempt to attack and take these Islands: That the respective Justices Captains and Commanders in these Islands Do take a Speedy & Perticular care that due Watches and lookouts be kept: That No Surprise now at this dangerous Juncture made and Perticularly att the Two Fforts on the West side.

Ordered that Joseph Cox Do according to the late order of the second March last take care that the ferry Bridges be forthwith wholly repaired and made good And that he bee allowed 4s 4d p day for the same.

Upon a late view taken by His Excelley The Gove of the Castle Itt is Ordered That Anthony Wood and Nathaniel Smith Junr Both of Tuckers Towne Do henceforth give theri due attendance artt the Castle for the supply of the Guard there And that they bee paid and allowed the allowance accordingly.

Att the same Councill Table:

On hearing the Report returned by the Referees about Samuel Harvey and Richard Norwood.

It is ordered that the answer of the said Norwood be dismissed and that the said Mr Norwood file in a New and better Answer on Oath within tenn daies now ensuring.

On a motion about the matter in difference betweene Mr Peter Whalley and Mr Thomas Burton and Mr Daffy. And reading the power of Attorney in that behalf from Mr Whalley to Mr Durham therein no mention is made of Thomas Burton only of Thomas Barton. Itt is not Adjudged Sufficient to prosecute the matter therein contained for that there is no such person of the name of Barton in these Islands.
