Settling the estate of Jacob was very complicated.373 His will is ten handwritten pages long, and contains sixteen specific items of bequest, appointing his son Luther F. as executor and bestowing a total of $11,500 to his wife and children. In addition, any remaining estate after these distributions and payment of other debt is to be divided in 57 parts, with each heir receiving various portions of the 57 parts. [Pollard-Jacob Estate:files 39526-1 to 39526-12]

Luther F. Pollard presented the will to the probate judge on 15 May 1857, and a hearing was called for 2 June 1857 for all interested parties. On 30 June 1857, the will was decreed to be approved based on the testimony of the witnesses. However, also on 30 June 1857, an appeal was filed by Alfred Pollard (son of Jacob), Mary Hazen (daughter, widowed), Samuel Hazen (husband of dau. Betsey), and John J. Graves (husband of dau. Lucy). They filed their specific reasons for contesting on 27 July 1857, now including Betsey and Lucy as signataries. There were several different specific items, but it boiled down to saying that Jacob Pollard was not mentally competant to make a will, nor had he been for some time. [Pollard-Jacob Estate: files 39527-13 to 39526-28]

On 30 June 1857 Luther and Alfred were named as “special administrators” of the estate, and Luther, along with Luther Farwell and Asa Lawrence signed a $10,000 bond, agreeing to make a present a total inventory of the estate withing three months of 30 June 1857. Alfred Pollard, Samuel Hazen, and John J. Graves signed a separate bond, agreeing to the same terms. An inventory was carried out by three independent appraisers and delivered to the probate judge on 31 August 1857. Luther and Alfred Pollard signed acknowledgment of receipt on 22 Sept. 1857. The personal estate was valued at $4695.81, real estate not valued. [Pollard-Jacob Estate: files 39526-29, 30]

On 13 April 1858, the Supreme Judicial Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts reported that the appeal, which had been continued from its first hearing in October of 1857, had been dropped by the appellants, and the probate of the will was to proceed. This was attested to by the court clerk on 14 June 1858. [Pollard-Jacob Estate: files 39526-31 to 39526-33]

On 22 June 1858 a new bond for $30,000 was signed by Luther F. Pollard, Luther Farwell, and Joseph F. Paul to prepare an inventory of Jacob’s estate within three month’s time. The inventory and statement of their expenses was delivered on 12 October 1858 and included Schedule A - Amounts Received ($254.18); Schedule B - Amounts Paid ($1136.42); Schedule C - Personal Property Appraised and Converted into Cash ($1142.67); net estate value reported as $4953.99. Luther F. Pollard again appointed as estate executor. [Pollard-Jacob Estate: files 39526-34 to 39526-43]

Another inventory, by appraisers Stephen Kendall and James Standish give a value of personal property of $3951.14, also as of 12 October 1858; includes notes on money owed by various people. [Not sure why this conflicts with the number in the previous paragraph; subtracting Schedule C amount does not balance. ???] This inventory also includes real estate, which includes 1/2 the homestead in Groton, a house in Groton Center, two lots, and two houses in Boston, valued at a total of $7925.00. Total estate is thus $11,876.14. [Pollard-Jacob Estate: 39536-44 to 39526-47]

On 1 November 1858 Walter Pollard (sibling of Luther and Alfred) filed an objection to the accounting from his brothers of 12 October 1858, claiming the accounting was inaccurate and the total not correct. The actual specific list of complaints was filed 17 February 1859. [Pollard-Jacob Estate: 39525-48 to 39526-52]

On 14 June 1859 Luther F. Pollard filed a new accounting of the estate and expenses, showing a net total of $12,665.14. [Pollard-Jacob Estate: 39526-53 to 39526-61]

On 7 March 1861 Louisa F. Lewis sent a letter to the probate court accusing Luther F. and Alfred Pollard of overcharging for expenses as administrators of the estate of their mutual father Jacob Pollard. Then on 1 April 1861 Louisa F. Lewis filed a petition stating that she had not received her inheritance from the estate of Jacob Pollard. Luther F. Pollard then filed another accounting of the estate on 11 June 1861 (actually performed on 15 May 1861). This is the end of the documentation, lacking a resolution of her complaint. 48 Samuel Radue.255 Born abt 1760/70. Occupation: Shepherd (Schäfer).

Samuel Radue may or may not be the father of Christian Radue, but the following information from the church books of Sonnenberg/Lebehn/Kyritz suggests that he could be.

One Carl Samuel Radue, Schäfer Knecht, son of Schäfer Samuel Radue of Lebehn, married Dorothea Borchart on October 25, 1818, when he was 27. Thus Carl Samuel was born about 1791, and his father Samuel perhaps 1760-70. In 1818 there is a baptism sponsor named Christian Radue, described as “Schäfers Sohn.” Other Radues (David and Michael) are elsewhere described as “Schäfer Knecht,” and sometimes there is a reference to simply “Schäfer Radue.” Since Christian is described by reference to his father, perhaps this suggests that he is a young man or boy without profession yet (although most likely confirmed). This timing is consistent with Ferdinand Wilhelm’s father Christian, who was having his family in the 1820s - 1830s.

The Radue name may have some connection or origin with the Radue River.

The Radew (in German Radüe) is a river in Poland of 100-kilometer length. It arises from the Pomeranian ridge near S?polno Wielkie (Gross Karzenburg) in the Powiat Szczecinecki. The Radew flows by Karlino (Körlin) in the Powiat Bia?ogardzki (Belgard) into the Pars?ta (Persante) and is its most important tributary. (translated from <http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radew_%28Fluss%29>)

He married Unknown ca 1790.

They had the following children:
i. Carl Samuel255 (ca1791-)
24 ii. Christian (ca1800-)
iii. Michael255 (ca1804-)

He married Marie Magdalena Hahn310.

They had the following children:
31 i. Emilie Marie Christine (1829-<1866)
ii. Caroline Friederike Auguste (1831-1922)

Notes on the Hahns in Stettin

The St. Gertrud church books contain the birth/baptism records for eight children born between 1793 and 1830. From these is it possible to construct several families with the Hahn name during that time period.

Johann Melchior (Michael) Hahn and Charlotte Hartwich are named as the parents of three children: Caroline Friederike, b. 19 Apr 1816, bap. 5 May 1816; August Philipp, b. 6 June 1818, bap. 14 June 1818; Wilhelmine Friederike, b. 14 Feb 1821, bap. 4 March 1821. There appears to be a fourth daughter, Sophia Charlotte, probably b. bef 1800. She is listed as a baptism witness for Wilhelmine Friederike, identified as a daughter of the father of WF. She also was the mother of an illegitimate daughter, Caroline Friederike Hahn, b. 21 March 1819, bap. 4 April 1819. A witness for this baptism is identified as the mother’s father, Johann Hahn. Since her middle name was Charlotte, it seems likely that Charlotte Hartwich was also her mother. Based on the estimated birth of Sophia before 1800, a likely date for the birth of Johann Melchior is probably before 1775.

Dorothea Louise Hahn (age 30) gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Albertine Julie Elisabeth Hahn, b. 21 July 1827, bap. 3 Aug 1827. One baptism witness was Dorothea’s father, Johann Friedrich Hahn, a master baker; another witness was her sister, Albertine Hahn. Since Dorothea was born ca. 1797, her father was likely born ca. 1770 or before.

More speculative is some relationship among these families. Johann Melchior Hahn and Johann Friedrich Hahn appear to have been born sometime prior to ~1775, based on the births of their children. They could be brothers, but there is no direct evidence for that.

A record for a fourth family, for Adolph Friedrich Herrmann Hahn and Ernestine Lugnow is also found, but only for one child: Adolph Friedrich Herrmann Hahn, b. 21 March 1826, bap. 2 April 1826. Adolph senior might have been an immigrant to Stettin, as he is listed as a master brick maker, with the notation “jetzt hier Arbeitsmanns” meaning here now a laborer, possibly not yet eligible to practice his trade.
