1641 Protestation Return for Withiel

In 1641, during its struggles against Charles I and his advisor the Earl of Strafford, the House of Commons affirmed the supremacy of the Protestant religion as embraced by the Church of England. Later, instructions were issued to the counties to secure the oaths of all persons over the age of 18 years to maintain and uphold the Protestant religion. Oaths were generally confined to males, although there are women included in some parishes. Parishioners were required to affirm their support of the Protestant religion before Justices of the Peace. These affirmations were recorded and presented to Parliament and have become known as the 'Protestation Returns'.
