WTTHIEL is a parish and village, watered by a small tributary of the river Camel, 3 miles from Roche station on the Par and New Quay branch, of the Great Western railway and 3 miles from Grogley Halt on the Bodmin and Wadebridge branch of the London and South Western railway, and 6 west from Bodmin, in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Pydar, Bodmin union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Clement is a building of stone and granite, in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south, porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, 3 of which are hung and 2 broken and lying on the tower floor; there are 240 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1567; marriages and burials, 1568.
The living is a rectory, net income £208, including 47 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Sir Vyell Donnithorne Vyvyan bart. and held since 1892 by the Rev. William Sandwith Cruddas M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford, and rural dean of Bodmin. Here are two Wesleyan Methodist chapels and a United Methodist chapel. The poor have about £3 yearly from Vyvyan's charity of £106.10s invested funds. The Rev. Sir Vyell Donnithorne Vyvyan bart. of Trelowarren, Mawgan-in-Meneage, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Viscount Clifden, R. N. Cole esq., Charles Ebenezer Treffry esq. of Place House, Fowey, and Sir R. Edgcumbe.
The soil is clay and marl; subsoil, stone, intermixed with iron. The chief crops are cereals. The area is 3,085 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £2,296; the population in 1901 was 349.
