Quesnelle Forks
1893 Directory

This Directory was transcribed by Wanda Story. The original source for this information was the 1893 Williams Directory of BC.

Quesnelle Forks: In the Dominion Electoral District of Cariboo Lillooet and the Provincial of Cariboo, W. Stephenson, Government agent and mining recorder.  this is one of the oldest mining camps in Cariboo District, being established in 1859, since which time there has been continuous gold mining carried on in the vicinity.

In 1864 the white miners had about deserted the camp for Antler, Williams and other creeks in that vicinity, the Chinese that were then following up the white men were not slow to take possession of the almost deserted town, which soon became a central point for their operations on the South and North Forks, as well as for considerable distance down the main Quesnelle River.

During the last three or four years the white miners have been turning their attention to this part of Cariboo for hydraulic mining.  At present there are several companies constructing ditches and preparing to go  into hydraulic mining very extensively, for which this section of Cariboo is favorable, as where a supply of water can be obtained, hydraulic mining can be carried on from seven to eight months in the year.

Last year 1891, the Government opened up a sleigh road from near the 150 Mile House to this place thus all heavy material needed for mining can be sleighed in during the winter, and it is quite probable that this road will soon be improved into a wagon road.  the distance from 150 Mile House to Quesnelle Forks is about 60 miles there is also a good pack trail from Soda Creek to Quesnelle Forks, the distance is 54 miles.

There is a weekly mail via 150 Mile House during the summer.  Fort nightly during the winter, which is carried by the B.C. Express Company's stage from Ashcroft station 190 miles, nearest telegraph office Soda Creek, banking point, Kamloops.  Population 200.
