Grand Canyon University
Grand Canyon College, an institution owned and operated by the Baptist General Convention of Arizona, was approved by the Glendale session in 1946. Trustees were selected by the convention's executive board in March 1947, and the charter was received August 1, 1949. The first graduating class (1951) had six members. At the end of the first seven years the graduates numbered 115. It became fully accredited in 1952. The first president was Willis J. RAY. There were 123 enrolled the first year. In the summer of 1951, the college was moved to a permanent 160-acre campus at 3300 West Camelback in Phoenix. Leroy SMITH was then the president. Presidents of the college have been Willis J. RAY, Leroy SMITH, B. O. HERRING, Glen EASON and Loyed R. SIMMONS.

The Phoenix Indian School
The Phoenix Indian School was a boarding school founded in 1891 with the goal of fostering the assimilation of Native Americans into white society. The school served as a federal educational institution for Native American children from tribes in Arizona and elsewhere in the Southwest. Its last graduating class consisted of nineteen students in 1990.
