| The Erzbischöfliches Konsistorialarchiv Salzburg are the official church archives of Salzburg. All registered church data can be found here. The archives also contain data from parts of Tirol. Data from Chiemsee and Berchtesgaden dating before 1809 may also be found here. Exact information regarding the archive contents can be found over their homepage (link above).
Generally one can research directly in the archives. There is no fee for researching. However, it is advised to reserve seating. It is also appropriate to only research with pencil (no pens, please). Most all information is found on microfilm which was copied from it's original form. Please be aware that data written generally before 1900 is handwritten in Corinth. It is very difficult to read if one is not familiar with this script. Also, data is written in Latin. Unfortunately most data written before 1850 is found to not be legible to beginner genealogists. However, there is hope... It is possible to hire researches to work on projects. The charge is 25 Euro per hour. This may seem like a lot, however, I have found that the research made is very exact and detailed. Depending on the size and importance of the project, it is definately worth the fee if you are not able to do the research yourself. In hiring a researcher, it is important to give them the best details possible. A name, approximate date and town are a must. All registers are organized according to town. A birth date, nuptual date or death date helps shorten the research time and improves the chances of finding the your ancestors. Note: Archive contents can be found under above link..."Bestände". Follow "Matriken" for church archives. |
