Thank you to everyone who helped with the move to our new premises.  Also for putting up the shelving along one wall and getting the books up off the floor.  We are slowly getting settled in and deciding where to put things but hopefully you should be able to find what you are looking for now.

In keeping with the theme of Education I would just like to remind members of our large collection of district school enrolments and various School Histories in our SCHOOL section and cards in the filing cabinet now in our room.  Also remember to check the DISTRICT HISTORIES section as well, as schools are often mentioned in these.

SWAN HILL REGIONAL LIBRARY NEWS

New Library:

Well, it's finally happened!  The library moved into its new premises at 53-67 Campbell Street, two weeks before Christmas.  As you can imagine, it was a very hectic time for all involved.  We now have a new front counter (complete with return chutes for returned books, videos etc, a separate loans area and an information/help desk) with enough room for several staff to attend to customers during our busy periods. Thank you to Julie Whateley's husband, Bob, who very patiently helped us design our new desk and did a wonderful job!!  We are still waiting on some more shelving which is needed to spread out books/magazines which are still rather crowded.  We are using temporary computer printed signs to signpost different collections in the library, but we will shortly be ordering more professional-looking hanging signs, especially pointing out where to find the Local History Room, Genealogical Room, Toilets, Meeting Room etc.  Our new library also has two after-hours return slots located in the doors towards the "Forty Winks" side of the building.  Our phone and fax numbers remain the same.

Local History Room:
The Local History Room (or Heritage Centre) is now located at the back of the library down the left corridor and near the Genealogical Room.  Unfortunately, due to a delay in the arrival of shelving, this collection is the last to be set up.  The Local History Room should be completed by Wednesday 2nd February.  It is likely that the Family Search computer will be relocated back in this room (it has temporarily been housed in the Genealogical Room) for all members of the public to use.  The Victorian, NSW and Tasmanian Pioneer Indexes on CD-Rom will now be accessed via the Family Search computer instead of the public access computer in the general library area.

New Books:
If you come across any interesting titles you would like to suggest that the library purchase (Genealogy, History or any other subject) please feel free to do so.  We still have a little money left for book purchases until we receive our next lot of funding in July!

Information Officer.
