In 1885, the 600 acres were home to a working farm attached to Kings County Asylum. In 1900, the site became a state mental hospital.
King's Park closed at the end of 1996, and the remaining 1300 patients were transfered to Pilgrim State Hospital. The community is figuring out what to do with the property. Office parks and parkland are two of the choices. King's Park is located not far from the shore of Long Island Sound, about a third of the way out on Long Island from New York City.
