Click on the link to the right to order "Eloise: Poorhouse, Farm, Asylum and Hospital" by Patricia Ibbotson. "The book, in over 220 historic photographs, follows the facilitie roots, from its beginnings as a poorhouse, to the founding of its psychiatric division and general hospital. The reader will also be able to trace the changing face of psychiatric care over the years. The book effectively captures what it was like to live, work, and play on Eloise's expansive grounds."
Preservation group "Friends of Eloise" information:
The Friends of Eloise group meets the third Tuesday of each month, except for the months of July, August and December. We meet at the Kay Beard Building, 30712 Michigan Avenue, Westland, Michigan at 7:00 P.M. Everyone is welcome to attend and join our group.
The Kay Beard Building is still a County facility which has county offices. Frank Rembisz, Director of the Department of Aging, has an office in the Kay Beard building. He started the museum collection and the Friends group. His phone number is (734) 727-7373.
The group started about a year and a half ago, and has have started a museum in the Kay Beard Building, which used to be called "D" Building. Their collection is growing and they hope, with more exposure of the group, other items will be donated to the museum.
Other efforts include trying to restore Potters Field cemetery. This cemetary has around 7,000 graves, and the group has restored 400 markers.
