RUTH MARIE SAGO, 101, of 2902 Hwy. 115, Pocahontas, died March 11, 1999, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born Sept. 4, 1897, at Eldon, MO, she was a daughter of the late Clarence C. and Elnora E. (Barron) Skiles. Others preceding her in death were her husband, Grover C. Sago; a son, Drew Sago; a grandson, Chester Brooks; and a great-granddaughter, Willadean Wantulok. She is survived by two daughters, Floy Brooks of Pocahontas and Frieda Garland of Corning; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Gary Buxton officiating. Burial followed in Brockett Cemetery. PSH March 18, 1999. Contributed by Bruce Pond.

OFFICERS BAR ROAD AT POPLAR RIDGE, STOP HIM ... T. H. McConnell, 35 of Columbus, Ohio, traveling salesman for a Chicago Candy Company, was caught at Poplar Ridge in Craighead County between Black Oak and Lake City, last night between five and six o'clock when Deputy Sheriffs Cooper and Hainey of Leachville who had been trailing him ran in front and barred the road. McConnell ran the gauntlet of Monette police who attempted to bar his passage. He killed BILL SAMMONS, 72, farmer, in hit-and-run occurrence at Leachville in front of the Christian Church at 4:30. Towns ahead were notified and the officers took up pursuit. Officers who arrested him state that he was badly intoxicated and a quantity of whiskey was found in his car. Two women from Kennett, who have been selling magazines in the Leachville vicinity, were in the car with McConnell. After hitting and killing the aged man, he backed up. They begged him to stop. Instead he stepped on the gas and sped over the body again, officers report. Sammons was walking on the Highway into Leachville along the main highway when hit. Feelings ran high against the slayer and Leachville citizens threatened much violence. Officers removed him to jail at Blythesville for safekeeping. His trial will be held next Wednesday. Jonesboro Evening Sun, Jonesboro, Arkansas, Wednesday, 27 November 1929 Submitted by Sandy Sammons Simmons. PERSONAL NOTE: Bill (William Ingram) Sammons was my great grandfather, born 24 August 1856 in Randolph County, Arkansas. He married Josephine (Josie) Brooks on 23 Apr 1884 in Randolph County, Arkansas. He had one prior wife wife: Marinda J. Stout, born 1863, married on 14 Dec 1879. They had one child, Emma. And he married again after Josie: Lodena (Denie) White, born 15 Jan 1881, married in 1898. They had five children: Rosie Elsie, Arthur, Dewey, Willie, Annie, and an infant who died at birth. Bill and Josie had several children, but so far I've only been able to prove the three I personally knew about: my grandfather, Samuel Martin Sammons, born 25 Oct 1888, his brother Clarence, and his sister Lizzy Beth. I would like to learn more about the trial, but so far I haven't been able to locate information on it. My grandfather's name was misspelled in the article: Fammons instead of Sammons.

BOB SAMMONS, aged 50, of Lancaster, Calif., a former resident of Walnut Ridge, died February 11, 1975, in a Lancaster hospital. Born in Walnut Ridge, he was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the First Baptist Chursh. Mr. Sammons was an automobile dealer. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Dye Sammons; a son, Greg Sammons, of Lancaster; his mother, Mrs. Edna Sammons of St. Ann, MO, four brothers, Leo Sammons of St. Louis, Tommy Sammons of Torance, Calif., Carmel Sammons of Ventura, Calif., and Monte Sammons of Lancaster, California; four sisters, Roxie Miles of Lorado; Ouida Payne and Ella Marie Rorex, both of St. Ann, MO; and Sue Justus of Magnolia, Mississippi. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 in the Higginbotham Chapel with Rev. Doug Rorex officiating. Burial was in Lawrence Memorial Park under direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service. Pallbearers were Harry Lingo, Jr., Earl Gray, Elmer Hufstedler, Jack Rorex, Burke Gibson, and Dale Williams." (Newspaper unknown) Contributed by niece, Sandy Simmons.

EDNA SAMMONS , aged 81, of St. Ann, MO, passed away Tuesday morning (Feb. 18, 1975) in a hospital in St. Louis. Mrs. Sammons was born in Poahontas, but was a former resident of Walnut Ridge. Survivors include four sons: Leo Sammons, St. Louis, Tommy Sammons, Torrance, Calif., Carmel Sammons, Ventura, Calif., and Monte Sammons, Lancaster, Calif; four daughters, Mrs. Roxie Miles, Lorado, Mrs. Ouida Paine, and Mrs. Ella Marie Rorex, both of St. Ann, MO; and Mrs. Sue Justus of Magnolia, Miss. Graveside services for Alma P. Sanders, 91, of Edmond will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond. She died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, in Edmond. She was born Aug. 15, 1907 in Pocahontas, Ark. Survivors include a son, Paul Sanders of Oklahoma City; and a sister, Marjorie Lofgren of Edmond. April 7, 1977: E. L. Saylors drowns in flooded ditch: The week's flooding claimed its first victim last Thursday when a 36 year old rural Corning man drowned in high water near his home. The victim was Everett L. Saylors, 36, Rt. 2, Corning. Saylors died at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday after apparently falling out of his boat in water that had spilled out of a ditch near his home at the highway 135-62 intersection four miles east of Corning. There have been several reports as to what happened but apparently Saylors was attempting to move his boat or replace a shear pin on the motor when he fell into the water. He apparently was drawn into the swift current running in the ditch alongside the highway, which is elevated slightly in the vicinity. Clay County sheriff's deputies and the Corning CB Radio and Rescue Club searched for the body. It was recovered before 6 a.m. Mr. Saylors was born at Delaplaine, November 6, 1940, a son of Raymond and Lavina (Morgan) Saylors. In addition to his parents who reside at Delaplaine, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Patricia Ann (Smith) Saylors of the home; two sons, Tony Lee and Gary Don Saylors, both of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Cloie Ann Reed, and Misses Susan and Cheryl Lynn Saylors, all of the home; three brothers, Jim Saylors of Delaplaine, Melvin Saylors of Ravenden, and Junior Saylors of Rockford, IL; four sisters, Mrs. Earlene Greer and Mrs. Carolyn Fender of Paragould, Mrs. Mildred Young of Ravenden and Mrs. Debbie Kellim of Walnut Ridge. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Loy Greer and Chuck Gray officiating. Burial followed in Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery with McNabb's in charge. Pallbearers were Mike Banks, Jess Yeary, Jack Creameans, Ray Freeman, Bill Davis and Ronnie Crouch. Raymond W. Saylors, 82, of Delaplaine, died at Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould, Friday, November 13, 1992. He was born February 1, 1910, at Gideon, MO., a son of the late William and Mary (Lowery) Saylors. He is survived by his wife, Lavenia (Morgan) Saylors of the home; three sons, Melvin Saylors of Ravenden, Junior Saylors of Marmaduke and Jim Saylors of Paragould. four daughters, Earlene Williams, Carolyn Mason and Debbie Kellim, all of Paragould and Mildred Young of Ravenden; a brother, Floyd Davis, and two sisters, Nadeen Young and Ruby Carlile, all of Missouri; 28 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Gray officiating. Burial followed in Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Reyno Man Killed in Accident - Johnny Ray Scherrer, a 31-year-old resident of Reyno, and an employee of Cox Cotton Co. here, was killed Wed., Nov. 17, shortly before 3 p.m. in an accident at Cox Cotton bean elevator in Pocahontas. According to a report from Sherriff Bill Rapert, Scherrer was standing behind a truck which was in the process of unloading beans at the elevator. The truck unloaded the beans and was backing off the ramp and Scherrer was crushed beneath a wheel of the backing truck. He was dead on arrival at Randolph County Hospital. Mrs. Marie Alma (Rasdon) Schubert of Williamsville, MO, a former resident of Randolph County, passed away in Blytheville A.F.B. Hospital there last Thursday, April 21, 1977. She was born September 2, 1909 here, a daughter of the late John and Flora (Meridith) Rasdon. She is survived by a daughter Mrs. Patricia Canales of Memphis; three sons, Billy J., James Edmond and John Hatfield, all of Williamsville, MO. four half-brothers, Paul and Hubert Hatfield of St. Louis, Gale Hatfield of Hot Springs, MO., and Jake Hatfield of Tulsa, OK.; two half-sisters, Mrs. Viola Jackson of Eloy, AZ, and Doshia Hatfield of Lower Lake, CA. 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Church with Justin Maurath officiating. Burial followed in Duty Cemetery with McNabb's in charge. Mrs. Bessie M. Scott, 83, of Route 4, Pocahontas, died at Randolph Co. Medical Center Thursday, June 3, 1993. She was born Jan. 18,1910, at Sharum, a daughter of the late Isaac Alexander and Estelle Toma Haynes. She is survived by her husband , Ross M. Scott of the home; 2 sons, John Riggs of Danbury, Conn. and Bob Riggs of Barnhart,Mo.; 2 daughters, Lou Don Johnson of St. Louis, Mo. and Barbara Westphaul of Orange, Tx.; a sister Herma Campbell of Paragould; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Dean Jones officiating. Burial followed in Randolph Memorial Gardens . Arthur Willard Seawel, 63, of Rt. 2, Maynard, passed away in Community Methodist Hospital, Paragould, Sunday (1982). He was born June 18, 1919 in Randolph County, a son of the late Edgar and Leona Acree Seawel. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Faye Penn Seawel of the home; a son, Kenneth Seawel of Maynard; two daughters, Mrs. Edwina Handwork of Corning and Mrs. Debra Wallis of Maynard; four brothers, Jess Seawel of Rt. 3, Pacahontas, Nevin Seawel of Wenatchee, Wash., and Quimby and Clifford Seawel of Maynard; four sisters, Mrs. Verdie McMillon, Mrs. Mary Blythe and Mrs. Dovie Long of Maynard, and Mrs. Mary Penn of Arnold, Mo.; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Maynard Church of Christ with Harmon Seawel officiating. Burial followed in Maynard Cemetery. Jonesboro Sun, Monday December 23, 1996... Willmer Thomas "W. T." Shelton 81, of 1002 N. Madison, Jonesboro, died Sunday at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center. He was self employed and was a member of the North Main Baptist Church. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dollie Summers Shelton of the home, four sons: Thomas Leo "Toby" Shelton and David Shelton of Jonesboro, Jerry Shelton and Thomas Shelton of Atwood, Tenn; three daughters: Louise McPherson of Kaufman, Texas; Wilma Easley of Ennis, Texas; and Hilda Bennett, of Round Rock, Texas; One brother, J. S. Shelton of Jonesboro. 20 grandchildren and 20 greatgrandchildren. Funeral Services will be Tuesday at 2:00 pm in the Memorial Chapel of Emerson Funeral Home with James Strait and Tommy Stacey officiating. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Cemetery. W. T. Shelton was born Jan 28, 1915 in Okean, Randolph Co Arkansas, son of Leander and Mazy Ball Shelton, Brothers were Johnny P. Shelton, Richard Russell Shelton, Jewel S. Rufe Flynn Shipman, age 68, well known Warm Springs farmer, died in St. Bernards Hospital in Jonesboro at 8 o'clock yesterday morning.(Nov. 1,1950) He was born in Ripley County, Mo., but had lived in Randolph County for many years. Funeral services will be conducted at Pratt Cemeterty at 10 o'clock Friday morning by Rev. W. Harry Hunt. Interment will be under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home. He leaves his wife Mary L. Pratt Shipman; a son Paul Shipman of Detroit Michigan ; a brother Edd Shipman of Cushing Ok. and a sister, Inez Cowden of Kansas City. Submitted by Lee & Betty Tucker.

One of the infant twins (SILAS SHIPMAN) of Mr. and Mrs. Rufe Shipman died the other morning (12 Jan 1917) after a lingering illness and was placed to rest in the Pratt Cemetery. STERLING PAUL SHIPMAN, age 50, was dead on arrival at Randolph County Hospital September 30, 1967. He was born in Randolph County, December 5, 1916, a (twin) son of Mrs Mollie Vandergriff and the late Rufe F. Shipman. Other than his mother he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gracie Hartgraves of Detroit, Michigan. Funeral services were conduced at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Bro. Alvin Allison officiating. Burial was in Pratt Cemetery under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home. Mrs. Daisy A. SHIVLEY, 102, of Pocahontas, d. June 25, 1998; b. Aug 27, 1895 at Noland, a lifetime resident of Randolph County; dau of late Mack and Martha (Nicks) Ragan; widow of Jim Shivley. PSH JULY 2, 1998

On December 29, 1923 the death angels took from the family circle a beloved wife and mother, Mrs. Deemie Shocklee. She was born near Attica on May 24, 1878 and from her early life she lived a consecrated life of purity. She professed faith in Jesus Christ and joined the Oak Grove Baptist Church when a mere child. On September 16, 1898, she was married to Dave Shocklee, with whom she lived for 25 years. To this union 8 children were born five of whom survive her. She was confined to her bed for about five weeks with measles and pneumonia. All that care, love and skilled physicians could do for comfort and assistance was done but despite the prayers, and entreaties of all who knew her their appeals were overruled and her spirit took it’s flight to it’s Savior and loved ones gone before. There is no language that can speak the sincerity of this great woman's character, and in the experience of life; we have never met with one who seemed to more nearly walk with God. Her end was peaceful and gave evidence she was ready for Heaven. Mrs. Shocklee was 45 years, 7 months and 19 days of age and her life was a path marked with deeds of kindness. Much has been taken from this husband, three daughters and two sons, from the two sisters Mrs. Bertha Douglass and Mrs. Kate Boyd of Texas and two brothers Edd and Everett Teel, near Shiloh. Funeral services were conducted by J.A. Allison and the remains were laid to rest in the Gross Cemetery near Attica. May the bereaved husband and relatives be sustained by a strong faith in God and by the prayers of their many friends. Her Niece. Pocahontas Star Herald, January 1, 1924. GLADYS MARIE SHOCKLEE, 78, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 16, 1998 at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center, Jonesboro. Born Nov. 1, 1920 at Hamil, she was a dau of the late John and Leora (Johnson) Roach. Her husband, James Earl Shocklee, also preceded her in death. She is buried in Palestine Cemetery near Pocahontas. PSH Nov. 26, 1998

Mr. Versell Russell Shocklee, 80, of Columbus, Georgia died Sunday, November 15, 1998 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, at Waverly Hall Baptist Church with interment in Waverly Hall City Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. Mr. Shocklee, son of the late David Russell and LoDeemie Teel Shocklee, was born August 22, 1918, in Pocahontas, AR. He was an U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and lived in Columbus the past sixty years. He was the owner and operator of Rio Grande Fence Company and Gibraltar Fence Company in Columbus from 1950 until 1969. He owned and operated American Fence Products in LaGrange, GA from 1976 until 1988. Mr. Shocklee was a member and Deacon of Waverly Hall Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason. A sister, Lucy S. Philpot, preceded him in death. Survivors include: wife, Constance Reed Shocklee of Columbus; two daughters, Barbara L. (Richard) Moncrief of Brewton, AL, and K. Sharon (Mike) Pemberton of Waverly Hall, GA; two sisters, Lillian S. Roberts of Wesson, MS and Laree S. Johnston of Lizella, GA; one brother, D. Uvell Shocklee of Coleman, TX; five Grandchildren, Connie R. (Alan) McDaniel, William T. Reeves. Jr., Jeffery M. (Jennifer) Pemberton, Jr., Kathryn P. Joiner and Amy L. Pemberton; eight Great Grandchildren, Jessica, Molly and Abigail McDaniel, Bonnie Reeves, Kirsten, Jordan and Kathryn Joiner, and McKenzie Pemberton; many nieces and nephews. JAMES F. S. SIMINGTON, 80, of Pocahontas, died Aug 12, 1998 at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born July 24, 1918 in Attica, a son of the late Henry and Belle (Forrester) Simington. Mrs. Maude Mae Simington, 88, of 406 Bland, Pocahontas, died at Walnut Ridge Convalescent Center, Monday, Feb 26, 1990. She was born Sept. 22, 1903, in Pocahontas, a daughter of the late Emanuel and Eliza Penetta Pomeroy Guffie. Her husband Lucas Simington, preceded her in death. Survivors include a stepson McDowell Simington of Pocahontas, a step-granddaughter, and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Ray Burrow and Sherman Waters officiating. Burial followed in Randolph Memorial Gardens with McNabb's in charge. Pallbearers were Ron and James Sellers, Liston and James Simington, Ervin Wooten and Charlie Taylor. Molissia Simington, 75, of 1701 Lewallen St. Pocahontas, died Tuesday, January 27, 1998. She was born at Fender, August 30, 1922, a daughter of the late Charles and Agnes (Finley) Wells. Two brothers, Billy and Lloyd Wells, also preceded her in death. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pocahontas. Survivors are her husband, McDowell Simington of Pocahontas, a daughter Rebecca Bliesener of Wynne; three grandchildren; two sisters, Nina Wheat of Fontana, CA, and Patsy Carlton of Roscoe, IL; three brothers, Calvin Wells of Walnut Ridge, Harold Wells of Rockford, IL, and Albert Wells of Rockton, IL. Edgar Oscar Sisson, the son of B. F. and Lula (Reed) Sisson, was born December 19, 1892, at Vincennes, Indiana and passed away Friday, July 8, 1983, at the Good Samaritan Center in Minneapolis, Kansas, at the age of 90. He was united in marriage to Gertrude Cox, Oct. 3, 1915, at Richwoods. They made their home in the Pocahontas area until 1924 when they moved to Bennington, Kansas. He was employed as a section worker with the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement Nov 23, 1958, after 34 years of service. They cerebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in 1982. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and the Union Pacific Maintenance Employees Union. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Minneapolis Good Samaritan Center; two sons, Willie F. Sisson of Salina, Kansas, and Robert E. Sisson of Topeka, Kansas; a daughter, Mrs. Bessie Marie Spaeny of Salina; a brother, Noble Sisson of Pocahontas; a sister, Mrs. Bessie Ward of Tulsa, OK.; Five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Paul L. Sisson, who lost his life in World War II; a brother, Elmer Sisson and a sister, Mrs. Ella Morgan. Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 11, at the Shields Funeral Home in Minneapolis, with the Rev. Robert Frasier officiating. Burial was in the Bennington Cemetery. HARRY M. SISSON. Funeral services were held Monday at 9:00 a.m., at the Delhomme Funeral Home Chapel of the Flowers for Harry M. Sisson, 69, who died Saturday at the Lafayette, La., General Hospital, following an extended illness. Bob Walton, minister of the South College church of Christ, conducted the services. Interment was in the Holy Sepulcher Mausoleum in Opelousas, La. Mr. Sisson was a native of Pocahontas, a son of the late John Sisson and Jennie Crockett. He had resided in Lafayette the past 12 years. He was retired at the time of death, having retired in 1962 from Slemco, where he had been employed for over 20 years. Survivors include his wife, the former Octavie Bernard of Lafayette; two half-sisters, Mrs. Lulu Collins and Mrs. Frankie Oglesby, both of Pocahontas; a brother, Bennie Sisson of Pocahontas; several nieces and nephews. (Cam) Smith, died at her home on the Maynard Route Thursday.She was born in Randolph County Aug 2, 1880, a daughter of the late Henry and Sarah Jane Pratt Bennett and had spent her entire life in this County. Funeral services were conducted at the McNabb Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 O'clock Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Lawrence Ray, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Hershel Sylvester Smotherman, age 31, of Pocahontas Rt. 2, died of a heart ailment near Arbyrd, Mo. September 23. Mr Smotherman had gone to Missouri several weeks ago to work during the cotton season. He was born near Pocahontas November 18, 1917 a son of the late Sam and Minnie Teel Smotherman and had made his home in Randolph County most of his life. She was a member of the Church of God. Mrs. SYLVANIA SNOW, 87 a long-time resident of Lawrence County before moving to Pocahontas in 1981, died May 19, 1989, at the Corning Hospital. Born in the Hamil community on Feb. 15, 1902, she was the daughter of Leonard and Georgianne (sic) Stout Bellah. She was married to Harry Snow on Sept. 5, 1925. he preceded her in death July 10, 1984. She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons; four daughters; 21 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral was May 22 in the Higginbotham Chapel with Rev. James Coker officiating. Mrs. Laura Sparkman, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, 1943, at Corning, after a long illness. She was born at Pocahontas, Feb. 15, 1883, and was a resident of the county for forty-five years, thirteen years of which she lived in Corning. Mrs. Sparkman had been a member of the Pentecostal church since early childhood. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A.R. Brooks, of Pueblo, Colo., one son, H.E.Sparkman, of Omak, Wash., her mother, Mrs. Lizzie Dame, of Corning, and a half brother, Dave Dame, also of Corning. Thomas Locard Stayton, age 49, died at his home, on Rt. # 1, Walnut Ridge, (Fender Community) Tuesday afternoon, July 18, 1950, following a serious illness of several months. Mr. Stayton was born August 26, 1900, at Peach Orchard but had spent most of his life in Randolph County. His Mother was the late Leora Johnson of Route 1, and he was one of the county's most highly respected citizens. She was born June 2, 1931, near Holcomb, Mo., a daughter of the late John Henry and Ella Marie (Rasdon) Felkon. She was a study hall supervisor at Pocahontas High School. She is survived by her husband, Paul W. MRS. JOSIE BISHOP STOUT, aged 73, passed away in Healdton, Oklahoma on July 4th. Mrs. Stout was born and reared at Hamil and was a daughter of the late W. H. and Sarah Houston Bishop. Survivors include two sons, Lowell and Lester Stout of Healdton; a brother, D. C. Bishop of Imboden; two sisters, Mrs. Paralea Jackson and Mrs. Tabitha Coward of Pocahontas and several grandchildren. Mrs. Mary Jane Stubblefield, 87, of 1912 Thomasville, Pocahontas, passed away at her home there, Monday, June 25, 1973. She was born at Dalton, Feb. 3, 1886, a daughter of the late Rance and Jane Ballard Crawford. She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Essie Barthel, Mrs. Bess Peters, and Mrs. Montez Barthel, all of Pocahontas; 3 brothers, Walter Crawford of Imboden and Ora and Willard Crawford of Lilbourn, Mo.; 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Annie SUTTON, On Monday, August 29th, the death angel visited this vicinity and took from our midst Mrs. Annie SUTTON, our dear old grandmother. Her age was about 73 years. Her suffering was great and while we miss her dear presence and it grieves us to give her up, we realize that she has paid the debt we all must pay sooner or later. She was sick about six months and before her death expressed a willingness to go. She was a consistent member of the Freewill Baptist church and always tried to live a good life. She leaves behind four children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her death. To them we say, "weep not, dear children, but so live that when you are called you may meet her again." The remains were laid to rest in the Sutton graveyard, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. G.W. Million. PSH Sept 23, 1910. George W. SUTTON, the subject of this sketch, was born in the state of Missouri on Jan 15, 1856, and came to Arkansas with his parents when but a small boy and has spent the greater part of his life in Randolph County. He was married to Miss Tishie Million in August, 1877, and to this union twelve children were born, five of whom preceded their father to the spirit world. Brother Sutton suffered for several months with a complication of diseases and passed to his eternal reward at 10:30 o'clock p.m. July 19. He leaves a wife and seven children, namely: G.F., Will, and Wiley, who live near their father; Mrs. Burley Vandergriff of Keifer, OK, and Mrs. Dora Pitzenberger of Tulsa, OK, and Miss Pear and Bennie, who are yet at home. All the children were with their father, when death came, except Mrs. Vandergriff. The deceased was 60 years, 6 months and 4 days old. He was a consistent christian gentleman, a member of the Church of God and loved and respected by all. He bore his affliction without a murmur and trusted fully in God. His remains were followed to the Sutton cemetery by a large concourse of friends and relatives, on July 20, where they were laid to rest to await the final summons at the last great day. Funeral services were conducted by the writer. Weep not, dear friends, for he is free from all sorrow and pain. We cannot call him back but we can go to him, so let us live that when the end comes, we can say as he said, "Weep not, for I am going to be with Jesus." Uncle Marion SUTTON, pioneer citizen of Randolph county, died last Friday, Feb. 6, at the home of his son, Vass Sutton, near town, following an illness of about eight days with pneumonia. All his children were present at his passing. Uncle Marion was known as a constructive citizen, having devoted much of his time during his long and useful life to community and church work. Mr. JAMES FRANKLIN SWANN, age *69 years, ten months and three days, died here Thursday afternoon at 4:25 o'clock, after an illness of 23 weeks. Funeral services were held at Mt. Zion Church Saturday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Clyde Long and Rev. Carl Reynolds, with interment at **Rose Mound cemetery. The casket was opened at Rose Mound for the benefit of those who could not go to the church. Mr. Swann was born in Pocahontas, Ark., July 18, *1858. He married Martha J. FLANNERY, who preceeded him in death about eighteen years ago. To this union were born nine children, four of whom are dead. Surviving the deceased are sons, M. A. Swann, of Commerce, George Swann of Klondike, a daughter, Mrs. H. A. Lindsey, of Mt. Zion (community), all of whom were present at his bedside, and sons, Fate Swann of Birdell, Ark., James F. Swann, Jr., of Waggoner, Okla. Mr. Swann spent most of his life in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. For the past six years, Texas has been his home. Funeral services for Arcus Eli Swindle, 65, who died at his home near Middlebrook on Jan. 24, were held at Siloam by Rev. Wesley Henson of Doniphan on Friday afternoon. Pallbearers were Hite Mock, Loral Redwine, Talma Redwine, Fred Williams, Earl Vaughn, Junior Smith and Lehman Wright. Interment was under the direction of McNabb Undertaking Co. He is survived by his wife Mary Effie; 4 sons Greely of Middlebrook, Ralph and Ray of Dniphan and Grady of Pocahontas ; 8 grandchildren ; 2 brothers Horace of St Louis and Thurman of LeRoy ,Ill. ; 4 sisters Nancy Odom and Dovie Luter of Reyno, Belle Green of Doniphan and Teula Bates of Pocahontas. A grandson ,Pvt. Henry E. Swindle,son of Mr. and Mrs. Greely Swindle, who is serving with the Armed Forces in Germany ,was the only near relative who was unable to attend funeral services. Arcus Eli Swindle, 65, son of a pioneer Randolph County physcian, died Jan. 24, 1945 at his home near Middlebrook after an illness of several months. He was a son of the late Dr. William Thomas Swindle and Dora Hatley Swindle. The family was residing in Benton Co. Tenn. when son Arcus was born on Feb. 14, 1879. Mr. Swindle was Married to Effie Jones on Oct. 27,1900 and they were the parents of 4 sons ; Greely, Grady, Ralph, and Ray, all of whom survive.Mr. Swindle was a member of the Methodist church , Woodmen of the World, and for a number of years had served as a member of the Randolph County Democratic Central Commitee.Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but plans are that interment will be at Siloam Cemetery near Middlebrook, after arrival of out-of- state relatives. Graveside services for JESSIE PRATT SWINDLE, a 70 year old Weatherford, Oklahoma resident were held Wednesday morning at the Masonic Cemetery in Pocahontas under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home. Don Strait officiated. Mrs Swindle was raised in Weatherford and graduated from Weatherford High School in 1944, and from Southwestern Teachers Collage in Weatherford. She was married to Tom Swindle on January 14, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri and they made their home in Clinton, Illinois. She taught music privately and in school for more than twenty years. She retired in 1984 and with her husband moved to Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1985. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother Phay Etta Pratt of Weathereford; a son Richard Swindle of Weatherford; a sister Tella Jean Cain of Tucson, Arizona. WILLIAM THOMAS SWINDLE, 76, of Bono, a former resident of Pocahontas, died Wednesday, December 30, 1998 at St. Bernards Hospital in Jonesboro. Born May 9, 1922, at Penfield, Illinois, he was a son of the late Thurman and Ethel Lindsay-Swindle. His wife Jessie Pratt Swindle also preceded him in death. He was a retired agent for the railroad. Cona (Agee) Thomas, 83, formerly of Pocahontas, died Friday, June 20, 1997, in Hot Springs. She was born in Pocahontas, Feb 17, 1914, only daughter of the late Samuel Jefferson and Cora (Hall) Agee. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pocahontas, past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and retired from the Pocahontas school system after 37 years of faithful service. Mrs. Thomas is survived by two daughters, Elta Lee Johnson of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Rex Anne Waymon of Hot Springs; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rector Thomas, and eight brothers. Services were held June 23, at McNabb Funeral Home Chapel with James Anderson officiating. A tribute in song was given by her granddaughter, Laura Branson. Interment was at the Masonic Cemetery in Pocahontas. Pallbearers were Jerry, Charles, Rocky and Lynn Agee, Jack Jr. and Tripp Johnson. Ricky L. Tribble, 23, of Walnut Ridge, the grandson of a Randolph County man, was killed in this automobile which he was driving and was involved in a 7-vehicle-car pileup in Hwy. 67 south of Pocahontas, Thursday evening. The wrecks occurred at about 7:30 p.m., in dense fog. Three other drivers in the pileup were injured and hospitalized, Mrs. Tommie Stubblefield Tolson, 47, of Walnut Ridge (formerly of Randolph County); Marvin D. Lawson, 47, of Lake Charles, La., and Virgil Skaggs, 56, of Huff. Officers said the pileup occurred when Mrs. Tolson pulled from a side road leading from Southern Baptist College and pulled onto Hwy. 67 and was struck by a car. Moments thereafter, a pickup truck driven by Lee Taylor of Pocahontas hit one of the two cars and knocked it off the road, and Taylor's pickup came to a halt in front of a nearby service station. Within moments, a tractor-trailer hit Mrs. Tolson's car (from which she had alit) and knocked the car away from the impact area. Seconds later, a large auto transport truck piled into the back of the trailer-truck which had just hit the Tolson car, and young Tribble's car then piled into the back of the auto transport. Seconds later a huge trailer-truck plowed into the Tribble car and wedged the small car between the two large trucks, completely demolishing the Tribble car. Two other Randolph Countians were passengers in Lee Taylor's truck. They were Melvin Young of Birdell and Benny Blackwell of Pocahontas. All escaped injury, but Taylor's pickup was badly damaged. Tribble, a former Walnut Ridge High school star football player, was the son of Mrs. Bernice Modlin Tribble of Walnut Ridge, and the manager of Rorex Super Market in Walnut Ridge. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Billie Phillips Tribble; a brother, 2 sisters, and his grandparents, Earl Modlin of Pocahontas and Mrs. Mary Riggs of Walnut Ridge. Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Saturday at Bryan Funeral Chapel at Walnut Ridge, with burial in Masonic Cemetery in Pocahontas. Submitted by Reba Morgan Alsup.

He was born June 26,1911 in Knobel a son of the late Albert Mosbey and Gracie Ethyl Pratt Tucker. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Randolph Co. Highway Dept. Survivors are 2 sons Lee R. Mrs. Dolly Victoria Tyler, aged 63, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Leslie Bickers of Ingram, Feb. 24. Harvey Fletcher Tyler, 66, son of the late Pete and Dolly Tyler, died June 6. He was born in Pocahontas, August 2, 1916. He was united in marriage August 29, 1966 to Evelyn O. Reese. He is survived by his wife of the home in Mountain View, Mo.; one step-daughter, Sandra Butler, Mountain View; three sisters, Lola Ingram, Paragould, Maude Bickers and Thelma Lambert, Pocahontas. Alta Bowers Veitch died at her home in Starkville, Mississippi, on Dec.27, 1997. She was buried in the Oddfellows Cemetery after services at First Presbyterian Church in Starkville on Dec.30, 1997. Mrs Veitch was born in Pocahontas to Joshua Cartee and Mary Etta Haynes Bowers on Sept.15, 1908. She graduated from Pocahontas High School and went to Walnut Ridge to work in the Foster Dry Good Store, owned by Fred and Pearl Bowers Foster. There, she met Purina Mills representative Thomas Edwin Veitch and they were married Aug. 31,1930, in Pocahontas. They settled in Starkville in 1935 and remained there for the rest of their lives. Ed preceded her in death in 1986. She was also preceded in death by a daughter Nancy Claire Veitch in 1936, and a brother Joe Bowers and 2 sisters Mildred Bowers and Della Bowers Hooten. She is survived by 2 daughters Virginia Cowsert and Mary Montgomery; 7 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren. Edward R. Vester, 74, of Bismarck was born Nov. 5, 1900 in Pocahontas Ark and died Sept.14 at Farmington Community Hospital . He was the son of James A. Vester and Lara Phipps Vester. Surviving are his widow, Myrtle Goddard Vester of Bismarck;three sisters, Euna Weisenborn, Tura{Mrs Arthur} Zimmer. both of St. Louis and Wilma [Mrs. Raymond} Atwell, Leesburg; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons , Dr. James A. Vester and Raymond Vester. Mr. Vester was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bismarck; a Past Master of Bismarck Lodge 41 A.F.& A.M. and Sabylla Chapter 276 O.E.S. The body will lie in state at 7 p.m. tonight at Edna Lee Shipman and Sons Funeral Home in Bismarck. Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Bismarck with the Rev William Hodge officiating. Interment will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Bismarck. Ed was grandson of John Berry Vester and Virginia Elnora "Jenny" Eagan Vester from Randolph Co Ark. His father James Alfred Vester is my great grand uncle.

John Berry VESTER was found dead in his bed Saturday February 11, 1922 by his wife at their home near Minorca. He was in his 79th year and had recently been indisposed and his children had been called to his bedside. He seemed to be getting better, however, and his going was not expected. Mr. Vester was a prominent citizen and farmer of this county and was an old Confederate Solider. Besides a wife and family he leaves a number of strong friends and several other relatives. The burial was in Pitman Cemetery.John Berry "Bud" Vester was born May 17, 1846 in Benton Co. Tn and was son of James Henry Vester and Elizabeth Ann Benton. Raymond WALKER killed in Michegan Auto Accident:; Raymond Walker, age 38 , of Dwaine Michegan was killed in an automobile accident there at 10:30 Friday night. He was born in Pocahontas Jan. 1920, was a veteran of WWII . He was taken prisoner of War at Corregidor and was in the Bataan death march. He was a Japanese prisoner for 3 and a half years and underwent dire privations during that time . After his release Mr. Walker returned to Pocahontas but had lived in Michegan for several years. His wife is former Miss Pauline Capps, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Capps of Dwaine. Funeral services were conducted in Dwaine Tuesday and internment was in a cemetary there. He leaves his wife, three sons Johnny, Gary, and Ronnie, three daughters, Katherine, Wanda, and Helen Louise, of the home, his father L.M. Walker, his mother Mrs. Cloe Myers Walker of Dielstadt, MO, a sister Clara Griffin of Dielstadt, two aunts Mrs. Clarence Atkins of Pocahontas and Mrs. Alice Binkley of Walnut Ridge. A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born September 3, 1900, a daughter of John Wesley and Melissa Ann (Clayton) Finley. Her husband, Charles A. Wells preceded her in death. Mrs. Bertha Mae Wells, 94, of Jonesboro, died at Randolph County Medical Center, Wednesday, January 26, 1994. She was born February 21, 1899, at Fender, a daughter of Marion and Sarah Ellen (Owens) Stroud. Her husband John T. Wells and a son Tommy Edward Wells preceded her in death. She is survived by a son Charles Wells of Jonesboro; a stepdaughter Elda Swyres of Ellington, MO; a niece, Lois Jane Roemig of St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Charles Albert Wells, Jr., 66, of Rockton, Ill, went to be with Our Lord at 12:43 a.m. Saturday, Jan 1, 2000, from Fair Oaks Health Center. He was born June 12, 1933, Walnut Ridge, Ark, Rt. 1, son of Charles A. Sr. and Effie Agnes (Finley) Wells. He married Patsy E. Eubank in Pocahontas, Ark, on Dec. 31, 1953. Charles was an Army Veteran. He retired from Twin Disc in March of 1986 after 35 years of dedicated service. He loved fishing, baseball and reading Westerns. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Patsy; daughter Sheila (Steve) Stroud of Rockford, Ill; a son Mark (Heidi) Wells of Seattle, Wash; sisters, Nina Wheat of Fontana, Calif., and Patsy (Bill) Carlton of Roscoe, Ill; two brothers, John C. Wells of Walnut, Ridge, Ark and Harold (Jennie) Wells of New Milford, Ill; numerous special nieces and nephews, and many caring friends. John Calvin Breckenridge Wells, age 59 years, formerly of the Sharum Community, died at his home near Bay, AR. June 9, 1919. He was born April 3, 1860, in TX. a son of Charles Albert and Phoebe Annie (Morgan) Wells. He is survived by his wife Mona (Lester) Wells and 9 children: John T. Wells, Mrs. Annie McConnell and Mrs. Esther Burruss, of Sharum; Charles A. Wells of O'kean; Inez, Mae, Grace, Matthew and Noah Wells of the home; his mother, Mrs. Phoebe A. Wells of Atoka, OK.; and 3 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and 2 sons, Vernon and Clarence Wells. He was a farmer and a member of the Baptist Church. Lloyd Paul Wells, age 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Wells of Rt. # 1, Walnut Ridge (Fender), died in Baptist Hospital, Tuesday afternoon November, 8, 1947 from gun shots wounds suffered near his home on Monday. He was squirrel hunting with his father and brother, Albert, when Albert's gun accidentally discharged. Lloyd was a graduate of Delaplaine High School and had lived in the Fender Community all his life. Funeral services were conducted at the family home by the Rev. W. Harry Hunt and interment was in the Masonic Cemetery in Pocahontas, with Johnson Funeral Home of Walnut Ridge in charge. Mrs. Mona Wells, age 76, widow of John C. Wells, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Henry Morgan of near O'kean, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 1946. She was born in Richland Co., IL. April 12, 1869, a daughter of John T. and Hannah (Shaw) Lester, and was married to Mr. Wells in 1887. She was the mother of 11 children, and was preceded in death by her husband and two children, Vernon and Clarence Wells. Mrs. Wells had been a faithful member of the Pentecostal Church for a number of years. Survivors are 9 children: John Wells of Pocahontas; Charley Wells of Walnut Ridge Rt. # 1 (Fender Community); Matthew Wells of Trumann; Noah Wells and Mrs. Esther Livingston of Fresno, CA.; Mrs. Annie Thomas of Coulterville, IL.; Mrs. Mae Morgan of near O'kean; Mrs. Inez Endicott of Manila; and Mrs. Grace Caradine of Cash; 39 grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren. Delphia O. WHITE, 91, a longtime Baker City, Oregon resident, died October 1, 2998 at St. Elizabeth Health Services. Her funeral will be at 11am Tuesday at the Coles-Strommer-Monroe Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Vault interment will follow at Mr. Hope Cemetery. Pastor George Shurtleff of Oregon City will officiate. Mrs White was born Nov. 7 1906 at Imboden, Arkansas to Rhoda Bell Dodson and C. Walter Harkness. She received her limited early education in Arkansas. She went on to learn to read and write and was an avid reader until she lost her sight. She married Elihu E. White on June 9, 1923 at Powhatten, Arkansas. They moved to Oregon in 1939. She dedicated her life to her family. she loved cooking, sewing, gardening, fishing and hunting. She wanted her family to always be with her. At age 53 she went to wok at St. Elizabeth Nursing Home where she worked for 17 years until they retired her. she wanted to work forever. She loved the old folks, many who were younger than she, and they in turn loved her. She was told she didn't have to worry about going to heaven because she was already an angel. She was truley loved by many. Survivors indlude her daughters, Daisy Sweeter of Albany, Katherine Shurtleff of Oregon City, Dorthy Petty and Beulah Roberts of Baker City and Retha Reese of LaGrande; sons Ruben of Prarie City, Ben of Mondamin, Iowa and Teddy of Baker City; 27 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 14 gggrandchildren; sister Isabell Holt of Lebanon and Beatrice Haney of Dayton.She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, a daughter, Riosie Miller and son Wayne, a grandson; two granddaughters; and two son-in-laws, Robert Miller and Clarence Sweeter. Mrs. Geneva Angelina Victoria Ellen (Riddle) White, age 89, died at the home of her son, Will S. White, on Saturday, October 28, 1950. Wife of the late D. Pierce White and the only surviving child of Dr. Meredith Monroe Riddle and Ruth (Reed). She was born near Des Arc, Iron County, Missouri but lived most of her life near Ravenden Springs and in Pocahontas. She is survived by three of her six children; John, wife Anna and their eight children; Will, wife Lorene and their son, Willis; and Ella, husband Luther Crays and their daughter Opal (Phillips). She joins three deceased children; Anna, James (Jim) and Mary Susan Anderson. She also leaves many grandchildren, including Betty (Anderson), her husband Jud Grisson and their daughter, Nadine; Truman Anderson, wife Clara Fern (Baker) and their children, Frances, Thurman Jerry and Jim; and Roscoe Anderson, his wife Delores and their three children, Lanny, Jeannie (Reynolds) and Thyrsie (Cahoon). Mrs. White was affectionately known to her Riddle relatives as "Aunt Jenny." Services will be at the Free Will Baptist Church in Pocahontas, followed by internment at Masonic Cemetery. He lived in this area all of his life and operated a general store in E. Pocahontas for 26 years. On Sept. 12,1915 he married Miss Fannie Belle Adams daughter of Thomas E. and Lucie O. Pratt Adams.Mr Whittenburg is survived by 2 sisters Nola King of Pocahontas and Sarah Goheen of Barnhart, Mo. He was preceded in death by his wife, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Vester WILLIAMS, of Maynard was injured critically Tuesday afternoon about 4 o'clock when his automobile was in a head-on collision with another car on Hwy. 63 at Trumann. Mr. and Mrs. Wirt Criss of Trumann, occupants of the other automobile, were killed in the crash. Eye witnesses reported that the crash occured when the Williams auto, traveling south, attempted to pass a truck and was unable to pull back in time to avoid crashing head-on with the Criss automobile. He was taken immediately to St. Bernard's Hospital in Jonesboro, where he is in serious condition. Mr. Williams was in another automobile accident between Pocahontas and Maynard several weeks ago and had not fully recovered from injuries suffered in that crash. PSH 29 Dec 1949

Mattie Lee Hannah ( PARKS ) WILSON: Mrs. Mattie L. Wilson was born March 28, 1897 in Datto and died September 16, 1982 in Simpson General Hospital, Mendenhall, Mississippi. She was 85 years old and a member of the Datto Baptist Church. Her husband Perry Wilson, preceded her in death on January 17, 1968. Surviving are two sons, James Wilson of Mendenhall, Mississippi and Everett Wilson of Ogden, Utah; two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Keith of Pocahontas and Loraine Reid of O'Fallon, Missouri. There are seven grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning in Datto Baptist Church by Reverend J. C. Wilkes. Burial was in the Richwoods Cemetery under direction of Ermert Funeral Service. (I don't know when Matties's obit was published, but I believe that it was published in the Pocahontas Star Herald and judging by the death date it must have been about the 16 September, 1982.) Shanna Rae Wilson, 19, of 54 Bermuda Trail, Pocahontas, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Arkansas Children's Hospital, Little Rock. She was born April 30, 1980, in Paragould, a daughter of Don and Becky Wilson of Pocahontas. her grandfathers, Cecil Wilson and V.L. Williams, also preceded her in death. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandmothers, Ruby Wilson of Pocahontas and Willodine Williams of Riverside, Calif.; three sisters, Suzanne Hawkins and Julie Wilson, both of Pocahontas and Cara Jobe of Mobile, Ala.; two nephews and a niece. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Westridge Church of Christ with Phil Brinkley and Larry Owen officiating. Burial followed in Palestine Cemeter, under direction of McNabb Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Shaun Hatch, Darren Gowen, Heath Boothby, James Gowen, Phillip Brinkley and Moye Hawkins. A memorial service was held Monday, July 19, at the Conway Human Development Center's Chapel with Chaplain George Andrews conducting the service. PSH July 22, 1999.

JOSEPH ERNEST WINCHESTER, 99, of Pocahontas, formerly of Imboden, died Sept. 27, 1998 at Randolph Home. He was born Oct. 16, 1898, in Denton, and the son of Rev. James T. and Sarah Ann (McCarthy) Winchester. He married Esther Lily Jean on April 26, 1924, in Black Rock, who preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 1993. He is buried in New Hope Cemetery in Smithville. PSH Oct 1, 1998

ELSIE WINEBAUGH, 76, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 24, 1998, at her home. Born Aug 12, 1922 near Attica, she was a dau of the late Eunice Harvey and Annettie Ethel (Hannaford) Winebaugh. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery. PSH Dec. 3, 1998

Pauline Pratt Wisner, 87, of Pocahontas, died Tuesday, Aug. 31,1999, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in North Little Rock. She was born Oct. 11,1911, near Shannon, a daughter of the late Jarman and Gertrude Waldron Brown. (She was preceded in death by her 1st husband Hurschell Pratt and her 2nd husband Jim Wisner) Also preceding her in death was a daughter, son, brother and sister. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors are a son, Bruce Pratt of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter Sheri Pratt Carpenter of North Little Rock; nine grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday in the Chapel of McNabb Funeral Home with Don Strait officiating. Burial followed in Masonic Cemetery. Mrs. Alice Crosby Witt, aged 78, lifelong resident of Pocahontas, died in a Benton hospital Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. She had been in ill health for several years. Mrs. Witt was born in Pocahontas March 28, 1876, a daughter of the late Dr. G. W. Crosby and Mrs. Harriet Kibler Crosby. She was married to the late Judge A.J. Witt in September 1896. Judge Witt was considered one of the most brilliant lawyers of his time. His death occured in March 1915. Mrs. Witt was a member of the First Methodist Church here. Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending arrival of out-of-state relatives but services will probably be held Friday. McNabb Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. She leaves two sister's, Mrs. J. W. Argo of Pocahontas and Mrs. E.M. Wise of Decatur , Ala., and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Argo was in Florida at the time of her sister's death and is expected to arrive in Pocahontas today with her daughter, Mrs. Joe Meek and family, of Miami, Fla. PSH Jan 6, 1955. JOHN T. WOLF, JR., 71 of Rockford, IL, died Oct. 10, 1998 in Rockford Memorial Hospital. Born Jan 13, 1927 in St. Louis, MO, he was a son of the late John and Stella (Cagle) Wolf. He was married to the former Pauline Schaechtel who survives him. He was an Army veteran of WWII.He is buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Rockford. PSH Oct. 15, 1998

YEAMAN JAMES "MOOTCH" WOLF, 62, of Pocahontas, died Aug. 25, 1998 at Randolph County Medical Center as a result of an auto accident. He was born Sept. 14, 1935 near Harmony, a son of the late John T. and Stella (Cagle) Wolf. He is survived by his wife, Frances Lundry Wolf and is buried in Harmony Cemetery near Pocahontas. ZELLA LEONA WOODRUFF (right edge of obit is cut off), of St. Augustine, Ill, died Saturday, March 9, in Saunders Hospital in St. Augustine, where she had been a patient for several weeks. She had been in ill health for some time. Born Oct. 13, 1917, at Maynard, she was a daughter of Edw___ and Ethel Mack Riney. She was wed at Running Lake in 1935 to Buster W. Woodruff. They had lived at St. Augustine for the past several years. Her survivors include her husband; 4 sons, Benjamin Woodruff of Selkerk, Canada, Ernest Woodruff of Abingdon, Ill; ____neth G. Woodruff who is stationed in Rhode Island, and A_____ Woodruff of the home; 2 daughters, Mrs. Mary Lester of D____wood, SD, and Karen Woodruff of the home; her parents; __ brothers, Joe Riney of Maynard, Gerald Riney of Troy, MO, ____lin and Doyle Riney of Abin___, Ill, Victor Riney of Londan_____Ill. Funeral services were held March 13, at 2:00 p.m., in G____bus Christian Church at St. Augustine, with the Rev. Ri_____ Bussman officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg, Ill. RAYMOND WOODS, 77, of Pocahontas, died Nov. 27, 1998, at Randolph County Medical Center. Born Dec. 16, 1920 near Biggers, he was a son of the late Hollie and Ollie (Patterson) Schwinegruber. He was a veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife, Birdie Mae Walker Woods of the home and is buried in Nelson Cemetery near Reyno. PSH Dec. 3, 1998

Lewis C. WOOLDRIDGE, 93, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of the county died at his home near Warm Springs Friday. He was born in Randolph County, a son of the late William and Jane Wooldridge, pioneer settlers of the county. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Fred Blackwell at the Warm Springs Church. Husband, Wife Die Within 2 Hours' Time...A well-known Engelberg couple, each in their 70s, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Henry WREN, died within approximately 2 hours of one another October 3, both of apparent heart attacks, although neigher was said to have had a history of heart trouble. The Wrens' daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lloyd Wren, summoned by Mrs. Catherine Wren to check on her husband, found Mr. Wren unconscious in the yard. She summoned other members of the family and a McNabb ambulance which took Mr. Wren to the Randolph County Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. When told of her husband's death, Mrs. Wren became quite ill within 30 minutes and she passed away in Randolph County Hospital at 6:55 p.m. Double funeral services for the coupld were held Monday in St. John's Church, Engelburg. The funeral of Henry Wurtz who died on Saturday evening, May 07, 1932, about eight o'clock in the hospital at Pomona from injuries received while working for the Los Angeles county road department on San Dimas avenue, was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Todd and Reeves chapel in Pomona. Mr. Wurtz was born in Pocahontas, Arkansas, September 17, 1894, son of Joseph and Mary Junkersfeld Wurtz and had been a resident of San Dimas for the past 17 years, coming to California from Arkansas. During the war he served 14 months in service, 11 months of which were spent at the front. He was a member of the La Verne Post, American Legion. Mr. Wurtz is survived by his wife, Maude, three sons, Henry, Robert and Clyde and five daughters, Gwen, Angie, Kate, Eveline and Geraldine, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wurtz, five brothers, Edward, Frank Albert, Herman and Fred, all of San Dimas, as well as a sister, Mrs. Anna Guennewig of Troy, Illinois. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth and Katherine. An inquest into the death of Mr. Wurtz was held in the Todd and Reeves chapel, Tuesday at 1:30. Interment was made in the Pomona cemetery. The five brothers and a brother-in-law of Mr Wurtz were pallbearers. This article published in the "San Dimas Press" newspaper, May 12, 1932. San Dimas- Funeral services were held Saturday, June 2, 1962 for Herman Wurtz, 54, of 506 N. Lone Hill Ave., who died Thursday, May 31, 1962 at Pomona Valley Hospital. Mr. Wurtz was born in Pocahontas, Ark, February 25, 1908 to Joseph and Mary Junkersfeld Wurtz. He has lived in San Dimas for 49 years and was assistant superintendant at the San Dimas Water Co. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Henry and two sisters, Katherine and Elizabeth, (Elizabeth in infancy). Survivors are his wife, Opal, of their home, a son, Lyle of West Covina; two daughters, Mrs. Peggy J. Atteberry of Hermosa Beach and Mary Jo Wurtz of San Dimas; four brothers, Edward, Frank and Albert of San Dimas, Fred of Pomona; a sister, Mrs. Anna Guennewig of Troy Ill. and four grandchildren. The Rev. William Welch, pastor of the San Dimas Methodist Church, officated at services at Todd Mortuary, Pomona with interment following at Oakdale Cemetery, Glendora. JOSEPH WURTZ CALLED BY DEATH AT SON'S HOME - Joseph Wurtz who had been in failing health for several years, died Wednesday noon, April 14, 1943, at the home of his son Herman on West First street. Mr. Wurtz had lived in San Dimas for the past thirty years, coming here with his wife and family from Pocahontas, Arkansas. He was born in Paschel, Rheinland, Germany April 07, 1873, coming to America with his parents and four of his siblings in 1881. Mr. Wurtz was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Maria, wife, Mary, two daughters, Elizabeth and Katherine and one son, Henry, Four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by five sons, Edward, Frank,Herman and Fred of San Dimas and Albert of Battle Creek, Michigan, who is already on his way here to attend the services. Fred is working at Pearl Habor. One daughter, Mrs. John Guennewig of Troy, Illinois is not able to attend the funeral. Survived also by one brother, Mathias of Highland, Illinois and several grandchildren. Funeral services to be held in Todd and Reeves Chapel in Pomona, Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. Gordon Whipple will have charge of the service. DEATH OF MISS WURTZ - Miss Katharina Wurtz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Joseph Wurtz, died at her home on West Second street at 2 o'clock Monday morning, April 21, 1919, from a complication of diseases. She had been ill for several months, most of this time being spent at Pomona and Los Angeles hospitals in hopes that she could be cured. But soon all hopes of her recovery had to be given up. About ten days before her death she became quite homesick and was brought home. Toward the last she suffered greatly. Katharina was seventeen years of age. She was born October 18, 1898 in Pocahontas, Arkansas and had lived in San Dimas about five years. She was of a lovable disposition and had many friends. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Elizabeth. Besides her parents she is survived by one sister, Anna Guennewig of Troy, Illinois, six brothers, Henry of Pocahontas, Adam, Frank, Albert, Herman and Fred all of San Dimas, California. The funeral was held at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Catholic church in Pomona and interment was at Pomona. Gilbert Mosbey Wyatt, 48, of Des Moines Iowa, formely of Randolph County, died July 25, 1988 in Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa as a result of injuries sustained in an industrial accident. Survivors include his wife, Betty Perkins Wyatt of Des Moines; a daughter Jena Louann Wyatt and a son Eddie Lee Wyatt both of Des Moines; his parents James and Agnes Tucker Wyatt of Pocahontas; 2 sisters Maybell Brown of Jonesboro and Bethel Hefner of Paris Tn. Also surviving is his grandmother ,Gracie Pratt Tucker of Pocahontas.
