ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIFE OF SON OF POCAHONTAS NATIVE
Called the roll at Senate during Clinton's trial....Raymond Scott Bates, an Arkansas native whose resonant baritone has become synonymous with the institution of the U.S. Senate for those on Capitol Hill, died Friday evening, Feb. 5, 1999, after being hit by a car. Bates, 50, was born in Pine Bluff (MO), went to Washington in 1970 as a summer intern for Sen. John McClellan after graduating from Hendrix College. He worked in the Senate for 26 years. His father is Pocahontas native, Paul Dean Bates of Pine Bluff. Eight years ago, he attained the job of legislative clerk, helping to develop the Senate's first automated record-keeping system and several other systems used to organize votes and bills. But he is best known as the man who usually called the roll, his deep, booming voice and slow, exacting elocution setting a tone of dignity and deliberation in Congress' Upper Chamber. Bates' voice likely became known to more Americans during the on going impeachment trial of President Clingon. He has called the roll for most of the Senate's votes during the trial. Saturday morning, his empty chair at the front of the room was draped in black ribbon, and there were flowers on his desk. Senators and staff expressed shock and sadness at his death. "In the quietness, we can hear his voice call the roll, read proposed legislation, and most of all, express his caring friendship to us all," said the Rev. Lloyd Ogilvie, the Senate chaplain, who spoke of Bates during his Saturday morning prayer, traditionally offered at the start of Senate business. "His familiar voice was a pillar of our continuity and tradition," said Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., speaking in the well of the Senate after Ogilvie's prayer. A comment on the loss of Bates was also made by Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle. With Chief Justice William Rehnquist presiding, the entire Senate stood to observe a moment of silence after the two leaders spoke. Scott Bates and his wife, Ricki Ellison Bates, 49, were crossing a busy commercial street near their home in Arlington, VA, about 6:30 p.m., when they were hit by a Mazda sedan, police said. Scott Bates died a few hours later at a local hospital. Ricki Bates remained in serious condition after many hours of surgery to remove her spleen and repair four broken limbs, Senate sources said Saturday afternoon. She is expected to survive. Police did not release the name of the driver, who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Police have not charged him but are investigating the accident. The son of Paul and Mae Bates of Pine Bluff, Scott Bates was active in his church as a boy and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. He grew up loving politics, a love fueled by his father's service in the Arkansas Legislature. He served as a page in both the state House and state Senate before he went to college. Scott is also survived by three children, Lisa, Lori and Paul. PERSONAL NOTE: GG-Grandparents: Samuel James Noblin b. 1805 NC m. Celia Pyland b. Mrs. Thema Baty, wife of Albert Baty and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.M.Jackson, was born April 5, 1897 near Hamil and died at her home near Portia on March 7, 1917. She leaves a dear husband and babe, father, mother, three brothers, three sisters and a host of relatives and friends to mourn for her.  She was married to Albert Baty, July 8,1915.  She was laid to rest at Antioch, Thursday and funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.A. Allison. Aunt was a  dedicated to her Lord, having professed hope in Christ when 15 years old, and was a faithful member of the Missionary Baptist Church until her death.She was a obedient daughter and a faithful wife, it is so hard to give her up. It seems that we can hear her voice so gently. She has crossed the dark river and is now at rest. She can come to us no more but we can go to her. She has gone an left us and we know that we shall soon meet her again in that happy land where parting will never come. Weep not for her, dear ones for we know she is at rest, but let us be prepared for the white winged angels call, and meet our loved one in the golden strand.
"A precious one from us has gone,
 A voice we loved is stilled;
 A place is vacant in our home,
 Which never can be filled,"   Her Niece

A shocking accident occured at Skaggs Ferry on Black river last Sunday afternoon when Walter Bennett and Luther Gentry were both drowned. Mr. Gentry was a farmer living in the Gum Stump settlement and Mr. Bennett, who was his brother-in- law, was living with him and assisting with the crops. The family had gone to the river to spend the afternoon and before starting to return home Mr. Gentry decided to drive his mules into the river and wash them off. He had a rope around the neck of one of the mules to which he was holding. The mule became frightened and in some manner dragged or threw Mr. Gentry into the deep water. He lost his hold on the rope and being unable to swim he called for help. Mr. Bennett rushed into the water with his clothes on and made a heroic effort to save his brother-in-law, but as soon as he succeded in reaching the drowning man the latter caught him in a death grip. Bennett made a desperate effort to reach the bank but missed by only a few feet and both sank to rise no more. As soon as the news reached Pocahontas hundreds of people rushed to the scene and began searching for the bodies. They were found about 3 hours later near where they went down. The body of Mr. Gentry was taken to his home and prepared for burial. His funeral was held Monday afternoon and burial was in the Duty Cemetery near his home. The body of Mr. Bennett was taken to the home of his mother here and his funeral was held in the Masonic Cemetery Tuesday morning, Rev. A. T. Galloway conducting a very impressive service. Mr Gentry was about 34 years of age and leaves a wife and 5 children, besides many other relatives. Mr. Bennett was an unmarried man, 27 years of age and leaves a widowed mother, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Both were good men and their untimely death is regretted by the entire community.
