About Ouachita County :

History: Ouachita County, Arkansas was formed on November 29, 1842 by Governor Archibald Yell who carved it from the northwestern parts of Union County. The 44th county was named for the beautiful river that flows through it and forms parts of its borders. The name is pronounced "WASH-uh-taw" and is derived from two Choctaw Indian words "oua' and 'chita', translated "big hunt".

Ouachita is located in the heart of the Timberland Region in the southwestern part of the State. The Little Missouri River forms part of its northern boundary and the Ouachita River forms part of her eastern boundary and bordered by Clark, Dallas, Calhoun, Union, Columbia and Nevada counties. The county seat is Camden, known as the "Queen City on the Ouachita". Other towns and communities include Chidester, Stephens, Bearden, Buena Vista and Eagle Mills. The county is the home of two State Parks: White Oak Lake State Park and the Civil War Battleground Park of Poison Springs.
