In the name of God, Amen. The thirteenth day of December in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Six, I Edward Bumpass, of the County of Orange and Province of North Carolina, being sick and weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks to the Almighty God for his mercies; therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament. Principally and first of all I give and recommend my precious and immortal soul into the hands of God that gave it to me, and for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner and that of the direction of my exectutors whom I shall hereafter appoint, nothing doubting that at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God; and as touching my worldly Estate where with it has pleased God to bless me with, and after my just debts and funeral expenses are paid, I give and devise and dispose of in manner and form of followeth, to wit.-

I lend to my well beloved wife, Martha Bumpass, one hundred acres of land, including my plantation whereon I now live during her natural life, as also I lend her, the said Martha Bumpass one negro girl during her natural life, and at her death my will and desire is that the land and the negro with her increase may be sold and the money equally divided between my well loved sons and daughters.

I lend unto my well beloved wife, Martha Bumpass, all the rest of my estate during her natural life or widowhood to use it at the direction of my executors, but at her death or marriage to be sold and the money equally divided between all of my children.

My will and desire is that the member part of my tract of land containing one hundred and ninety one acres be sold at the death of my wife, Martha Bumpass, and the money be equally divided among my well beloved sons and daughters, that is to say my well beloved sons Augustine and James Bumpass and Sarah Bumpass and Gabriel Bumpass and Elizabeth Bumpass and Robert Bumpass.
