Strolling Down Central Avenue - 7
Those of you who have lived in the Hot Springs area remember the days when you got all "gussied up" before going shopping down Central Avenue, because the photographer from Stonecipher Photography, Petty Studio (417 Quapaw Avenue), Coffey's Camera Shop, or Deluxe Studio might take your photograph. (There may have been other photographers--these are the only four I know of as of this date.)
We are using some of these photographs and hope you enjoy them. If you have one that you would like included, please scan and email them to the webmaster.

From left to right, they are Mary Etta Stanley (1898-1980), Mildred Thurston, and Mildred's husband, John Thurston. The photograph, probably taken in the early 1950s when Mrs. Stanley was a resident of Hot Springs. Mildred and John Thurston were, at the time, residents of Lutesville, Missouri, now called Marble Hill, Missouri, which is near Jackson, Missouri, just north of the boot heel. All three are deceased with Mrs. Stanley being buried in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Photo had previously been shown as unmarked and has been identified by Rich Castle, Mrs. Stanley's grandson. Rich tells us the shoes Mrs. Stanley were wearing were red and were given to her granddaughter, Elana Churchill. Mr. Thurston was a World War II wounded veteran. |

| Florence Craig Maus (3 February 1905 - 10 November 1986) and Tacy Smith. Miss Smith was a former science teacher at Hot Springs Junior High. She was born 23 August 1919 and was married to Jack Pearson. She died 24 April 2009. James M. Hart was born March 24, 1916, in Nashville, Arkansas, but he lived most of his life with his Aunt Emma Hart in Hot Springs after the death of both of his parents early in his life. His father was a civil engineer and he helped build and partly owned the ill-fated M.D. & G. Railroad which had a depot that once stood at Central and Winans Avenue in 1910 in Hot Springs. James died September 21, 1995, in Hot Springs and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Hot Springs. His wife, Lillian, was born at the Howell Home Place "Under the Hill," Buckville, Arkansas. James was a World War II veteran, and he and Lillian owned and operated the Credit Bureau of Hot Springs for a number of years. | Hattie Earlene Slaughter (born July 23, 1899, San Augustine,
Texas; died January 25, 1995, San Augustine) and John Edward Thomson
(born April 29, 1895, San Augustine; died June 15, 1966, San Augustine).
They married January 30, 1920, in San Augustine. Hattie was the great-great-granddaughter of Edward Johnson and Deborah Sinclair of Columbus, Hempstead County, Arkansas. Edward was a Revolutionary War veteran. She is also the great-granddaughter of Rebecca Johnson and George Teel who were original colonists to Texas in S. F. Austin's "Old 300." Stella Pearl Avant Harris 3 March 1954. Stella was born 21 September 1903 in Avant, Arkansas. The little town of Avant was named for her grandfather, Moses Marshall Avant, who married Minnie Caroline "Tinney" Lamb. Stella and Ed Harris had at least 13 children of which only nine lived to become adults.
