R. John Partain of Umpire, Howard County, Arkansas, was born 27 April 1932 at Union Hill, Montgomery County, Arkansas. He married Dorothy Kennedy of Murfreesboro, Pike County, 30 June 1956 in Arkadelphia, Clark County, Arkansas. Their children are John Gregory and Nancy Deanna. John is a graduate of Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, served in the Korean War, and is a retired mathematics teacher.
Jefferson Hubert was born in 1903 [SSDI shows he was born 2 April 1903 and died 12 Sep 1993], married Gladys Phillips, and they reside in Fannie, Montgomery County, Arkansas. Jeff has two brothers, Eutah and Merle, and three sisters, Elva Clenney, Shirley Taylor, and Betty Cowger. Gladys, born 1907 [SSDI shows she was born 10 Nov 1907 and died April 1989] in Union Hill, Arkansas, is the daughter of Henry Joseph and Crissie Bell (Tucker) Phillips. Henry came with his parents Marion and Nancy (Ritchie) Phillips of Fannin County, Georgia, to Berry County, Missouri, where he married Crissie Bell Tucker, the daughter of Francis and Emma (Thornton) Tucker of Eagle Rock, Missouri. Francis Tucker was the son of James and Catherine (Bradley) Tucker, and Emma was the daughter of Kinnion and Jane (Boatright) Thornton. They were both of Tennessee and died at Shaver, Arkansas.
Marion Phillips was born in 1848 in Georgia to Jasper and Ruth (?) Phillips. Nancy Ritchie was born in 1845 in Georgia to John and Margaret (?) Ritchie. Marion, along with his large family, and Henry and Crissie Bell came to Union Hill, Arkansas, before 1910. Marion and Nancy are buried at the Reed Cemetery at Story, Montgomery County, Arkansas. [See Reed Cemetery transcription on this site.] Henry and Crissie Phillips are buried in Visalia, Tulare County, California.
Moses Partain (1859-1910) was the son of Frederic and Sarah Ann (?) Partain. Fred was in Johnson County, Arkansas, in 1850. He came to Montgomery County before 1860. Land transactions, a jury roster, and tax records seated him in Montgomery County by 1858 but he did not show in the census until 1880. Either "high water" or a wary Fred kept the census taker away. Family tradition is that Fred didn't trust outsiders very much. He was reputed to have mined gold somewhere in the Boullion Creek aware which is now under Lake Ouachita. Fred and Sarah's graves were moved from the Boullion Creek area in 1950 by the Corps of Engineers and placed in the Little Fur Cemetery.
Moses Partain first married Barbara Victoria Ratliff Hurst of Blount County, Georgia, at Mt. Ida, Montgomery County, Arkansas, 28 August 1877. Their children were Stephen, Thaddius, Robert Lee, George Frederic, Minnie, and Elmer Houston. After Barbara died, Moses married her first cousin Aramillia Ratliff (1877-1963), the daughter of Melton and Fannie (Hoskins) Ratliff of the Mt Tabor area. Melton was also from Blount County, Georgia. Their children were Francis Cora, Stella Parthenia Keener, Jefferson Hubert, Floyd Melton who married Vertie Hammonds, Arie Ethel Harper, and Cecil Joseph who married Lela Redd of Story, Arkansas. Moses, Millie, and her parents are buried at Mt Tabor Cemetery near Jessieville, Arkansas.
Gabriel Partain was in Cocke County, Tennessee, in 1830, and Johnson County, Arkansas in 1840. In 1870 he lived with his son George near Dover, Pope County, and is buried there.
