MISSISSIPPI COUNTY IN THE 1930's

The Flood of 1937

LEACHVILLE. During the flood of 1937 we lived a mile or so east of town near where the Cotton Belt Railroad trestle crossed what was then known as Dryland Ditch.

When my parents decided the water was going to break through or across the railroad bed they got us dressed and with what we each could carry they led us out, walking the tracks into Leachville where a local merchant, Lindsey Tabor and his wife, put us up. I also recall that it was winter because my father and older brother would walk back out to our place each day to check on the farm animals to make sure the water hadn't frozen in the night and to feed them.
