EMMETT ADCOX - Pine Bluff Commercial, March 2, 2000 Emmett R. "Bill" Adcox, 74, of Star City, died March 1, 2000, at his home. He was born October 12, 1925, at Beedville (Jackson County), a son of the late David Adcox and Edna Davis Adcox. He was employed by the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office for 22 years and Southern Propane at Star City for 11 years. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church at Sherwood. He was also a member of Roy Jason Fish Post Number 32 and the American Legion. He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by four brothers, B.D. Adcox, David Adcox, Neil Adcox, Preston Adcox; and a sister, Margaret Dilbeck. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Brockman Adcox of Star City; a son, Mike Adcox of Batesville; and a daughter, Kimberly Fellner of Jacksonville. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Griffin Funeral Service at Star City with Robert Green officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery at Yorktown. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Ollie Mae Allen - LINCOLN LEDGER, November 29, 2000 Ollie Mae Allen, 73, of Pine Bluff, died Saturday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Born June 29, 1927, at Yorktown, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Wiley and Minnie Scott Price. She was a member of New Macedonia Baptist Church at Tarry, where she served as an usher. She was a housekeeper for Jefferson Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Allen Sr. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley McGinister of Tarry and Bettye Miles of Little Rock; three sons, William Allen Jr. of Pine Bluff, Nathaniel Allen and Willie Joseph Allen, Both of Little Rock; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 25 at the New Macedonia Baptist Church with John Bush officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem No. 2 Cemetery at Yorktown, by the Brown Funeral Home. MRS. IVA ARENDALE Mineral Wells, Tx.: Mrs. Iva Mullikin Arendale, 71, of Redfield died here Monday while she was en route to her home. She was a native of Star City, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Thompson. She attended Lincoln County schools but had been a resident of Redfield for a number of years. Mrs. Arendale had been visiting her son in Arizona, and was returning to Arkansas when she became ill in Mineral Wells, and died shortly afterwards. Survivors include her two sons, Theodore Revis Mullikin of Clifton, Arizona, and Luther Elvis of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter, Mrs. Ima Jean Stubblefield of White Hall. (Mrs. Stubblefield was a granddaughter of Mrs. Arendale who after the death of her mother, was adopted by Mrs. Arendale); two brothers, Curtis Thompson and M. Thompson of Little Rock; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by South Funeral Home in Pine Bluff. Note: Burial was in Redfield Cemetery, Redfield, Jefferson County, Arkansas Leon Ballinger - Pine Bluff Commercial, Sept. 21, 2000 Leon Ballinger, 55, of Star City, died September 18, 2000, from injuries received in an automobile accident near Star City. He was born January 12, 1945, at Star City, a son of Rosie Ballinger of Star City and the late Bill Ballinger. He was of the Pentecostal faith. He was a mill wright, welder, a member of the National Rifle Association and National Trappers Association and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Other survivors include his wife, Linda Ballinger of Star City; a son, Kenneth Allen Ballinger of Phoenix; three daughters, Amy Lee Ballinger of Little Rock and Teresa Ann Ballinger and Paula Jane Eischen, both of Phoenix; two stepsons, Greg Haley and Glen Haley, both of Star City; two brothers, David Ballinger and James Ballinger, both of Star City; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Griffin Funeral Home at Star City. Burial will be in Holly Springs Cemetery near Star City. Velma Dixon Barr - LINCOLN LEDGER, JANUARY 10, 2001, PAGE 9 Velma Dixon Barr, 96, of Warren died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at the Bradley County Medical Center at Warren. Born Feb. 14, 1904, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Ethel Fish Dixon. She was a homemaker and a Methodist. She was the widow of Owen Barr who died July 20, 1999. They were married Feb. 18, 1947 in Reno, Nevada. Survivors include a sister, Grace Nix of Warren. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thurs., Jan. 4, at Hickory Grove Cemetery near Star City by Brother Bill Leslie. Arrangements were made by Frazer’s Funeral Home of Warren. Born September 21, 1909, at Star City, she was a daughter of the late John Bush and Catherine Brown Bush. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe R. Barrett; a son Charles Wayne Barrett; a daughter Mary Eloise Barrett; and a brother, Roy Bush. Survivors include two sons, Ray Barrett of Sunnyvale, California, and Herb Barrett of Warren; two daughters, Murlene Degges of Warren and Lucille Richardson of Onalaska, Texas; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Basnight. VERA BATES DUMAS - Vera May Bates, 79, of Watson, a homemaker, died Tuesday at Delta Memorial Hospital here. A native of Lincoln County, she was a daughter of William Sanders and Ruth Gage Tucker. Mrs. Bates was a member of Watson Assembly of God Church. Survivors include her husband, Reverend Luther Bates, seven sons, Jimmy Bates and Garland Ray Bates, both of Watson, and Bill Bates, Howard Bates, Johnnie Bates, L. W. Bates, and Lamar Bates, all of Pasadena, Texas; a brother, William Tucker of Benton; two sisters, Lizzie Moore of Pine Bluff, Cleo Gilbert of San Francisco; 32 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Espie Bennett and W.D. Bennett. He retired as a truck driver from Moss Seed Company, was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Pulaski Heights Masonic Lodge #673 for 45 years. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Shirley Cullins Bennett of Little Rock; a daughter and son-in-law, Leva and Buster Willis of Star City; a brother, C.E. She was born October 27, 1933, at Gould (Lincoln County), a daughter of the late Ivory F. Blasengame and Alice Neugent Blasengame. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith. ETTA BLASENGAME (2-4-1876 / 1-27-1959) Published 1-27-1959 Mrs. Etta Blasengame, 83, died today at 10:30 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.L. Harrison of 3300 West 13th. A native of Mississippi, Mrs. Blasengame moved to Pine Bluff 15 years ago. Since then she has made her home with Mrs. Harrison. Mrs. Blasengame was married to the late Oscar Blasengame in 1899 in Star City. She was a Baptist. A native of Lincoln County, he was born January 6, 1914, a son of the late John and Rachel Smith Blasengame. He worked as a welder for Cargo Carriers and Ben Pearson. He was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church at Star City. IVORY F. BLASENGAME (8-23-1892 / 2-24-1967) Ivory Franklin Blasengame, 74, of Star City, died in a Little Rock hospital, Friday. He was a retired farmer and timberman. Surviving are two sons, Elmer Blasengame of Star City and James Eugene of Illinois; four daughters, Mrs. V.T. Hunter of Georgia, Mrs. Mildred Bentley and Mrs. Robert Studdard, both of Pine Bluff and Dorothy Blasengame of Star City; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Blasengame, age 73, of Star City, died today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. E. Moore. Mr. Blasengame was born August 11, 1871 in Mississippi and at the age of 12 he moved to Arkansas with his father, the late Wade Blasengame, later settling in Star City, where he farmed until his sudden death this morning. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. J. E. Moore, Mrs. Ruth McEntire, and Mrs. Mary Blasengame, all of Star City; two sons, Wade of Pine Bluff, J.D. of US Army overseas; one sister, Mrs. Alice Newman of Star City; fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow in the Heflin Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. at Star City, by Rev. J. W. McCain, Presbyterian Minister. Blasengame, 60, of Star City, died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Little Rock, yesterday morning. A native of Lincoln County, Mr. Blasengame was born February 19, 1894, to the late William and Elizabeth Franklin Blasengame. He received his education in Lincoln County Schools. He married the former Freddie Mae McCool in 1944. Mr. Blasengame had served with the Arsenal Fire Department for 12 years. He was a veteran of World War I. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his widow, five sons, Sgt. Veo Blasengame of Fort Hood, Sgt. James B. Blasengame of Topeka, Kansas, Obie Blasengame of Pine Bluff, Marshall Blasengame and Jimmie Blasengame of Star City; four daughters, Mrs. Duffea Waters of Pine Bluff and Mrs. Jay Pickens, Katherine Blasengame, and Wanda Lee Blasengame, all of Star City; one sister, Mrs. Arthur Elkins of Pine Bluff; two brothers, Ivory and Oather Blasengame of Star City; and seven grandchildren. ORA BLASENGAME (9-6-1903 / 12-5-1941) Published 12-8-1941 Funeral Services were held this afternoon at 3 o’clock from Hickory Grove Baptist Church, near Star City, for Mrs. Ora Agnes Blasengame, 38, of Star City, who died at 5’oclock Friday afternoon at her home, following a two day illness. Services were conducted by the Rev. C.W. Barnes of Pine Bluff. Mrs. Blasengame, daughter of James and Mollie Raley, pioneer settlers of Lincoln County, was born September 6, 1903. She was married to Obie C. Blasengame in Star City on December 20, 1918. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church. Mrs. Blasengame is survived by her husband, Obie Blasengame; two daughters, Mrs. Jay Pickens and Miss Evelyn Blasengame of Star City; three sons, Veo, Bobby, and Obie Blasengame, Jr. of Star City; her mother, Mrs. Mollie Raley of Star City; one grandchild, Barbara Pickins; five sisters, Mrs. Tebo Cogbill, Mrs. Mack Morgan, Mrs. Ford Sawyers and Mrs. W.E. BLASENGAME (8-3-1930 / 2-2-1976) Published February 1976 Wilbur Gene Blasengame, 45, of Gould, died Monday at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Little Rock. He had served for about four months as the Chief of Police for Gould. He had been a Correctional Officer at Cummins State Prison Farm for about five years and had been a Lieutenant when he left. He attended Lincoln County Schools. He was a son of Mrs. Ozell Petty Blasengame Dorsett of Pine Bluff and the late Oather Blasengame. He had served in the Air Force for six years during the Korean War. He was a member of the Lone Grove Missionary Baptist Church near Star City. Other survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Harper Blasengame; four sons, Michael G. Blasengame of McGehee and Glen Blasengame, Gary Blasengame, and Clifton Blasengame of Gould; his stepfather, James Dorsett of Pine Bluff, and his grandmother, Mrs. Vida Petty of Pine Bluff. She was also a choir member. She married Lomon Owen on Sept. 3, 1938, at Star City, and he died in 1970. She married V.L. Browning in 1972, at Pine Bluff, and he died 1987. She receiverd her teaching degree from Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas). She married the late Isaac Albert Chambers in 1938. They settled in Star City where she began a teaching career in 1934. While teaching, Mrs. Mabel was responsible for organizing the Junior Beta Club and served as its sponsor for several years. An avid gardner, she was an active member of the Garden Lovers Club where she held various offices including president. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Star City where she served on the Administrative Board, taught Sunday school and held various offices in the Women’s Missionary Society. She lived in Star City until last year when she moved to Good Shepherd Retirement Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Chambers; sisters, Eva Lee Norton Carr and Gene Norton Reed. Submitted by Peggy Reichard GEORGE WASHINGTON FREEMAN Funeral services for George Washington Freeman, 95, Civil War Veteran, were held this morning, July 31 1943, at Tyro,with burial in Tyro Cemetery with Holderness-South Mortuary in charge. Mr. Freeman died at the confederate home Thursday afternoon. A native of tennessee, Mr. Freeman resided at Tryo before entering the confederate home. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. B. F. Boren of Gould, and Mrs. Hugh Brown of McGehee, four sons, J. E. Freeman of Dumas, Frank Freeman of Gould, Early Freeman of Thompson, Texas, and Jack Freeman of Beaumount, Texas, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.(George Washington Freeman died July 29,1943.) He was born June 18, 1902, at Greenbrier, a son of the late Jim Freeman and Elizabeth Wackum. He was a farmer and a Baptist. He enjoyed farming and gardening and was often referred to as "Preacher" because of his early circuit-riding ministries. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Mitchell Freeman, who died May 12, 1997; and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include a son, Billy Freeman of Altheimer; three daughters, Betty Campbell of Altheimer, Becky A. Smith of Cabot and Ruby J. Burton of Monticello; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hale South Funeral Home with the Rev. Hollis McDermott officiating. Fullbright, 81, of Benton, died March 8, 2000, at Saline Memorial Hospital at Benton. He was born September 18, 1918, at Star City, a son of the late Norman Fullbright and Mae Fullbright. He was a retired laborer with Jones Furniture. Survivors include a brother, Floyd Fullbright of Monticello; two sisters, Mary Carter of Euless, Texas, and Ila Calhoun of Star City. EMMA BELL GILLESPIE Star City: Emma Bell Blasengame Gillespie, 94, of Star City, died December 19, 1994, at Star City Nursing Home. Born December 18, 1900, at Star City, she was a daughter of the late George and Cora Smith Blasengame. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church near Star City. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Gillespie; two sons, Louie "Bud" Gillespie and Junior Gillespie, and a daughter Olean Gillespie. Survivors include three sons, J.B. Gillespie of Bryant (Saline County), James Gillespie and Homer Gillespie, both of Star City; a daughter, Diane Fullbright of Star City; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. GEORGE GILLESPIE (11-17-1896/9-12-1963) Star City: George Gillespie, 67, of Star City, died early today on the way to a Pine Bluff hospital. Mr. Gillespie was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the American Legion. He was a Baptist. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emma Blasengame Gillespie of Star City; four sons, Louis E. Gillespie, J.B. Gillespie and Homer Gillespie, all of Star City, and James W. Gillespie of Pine Bluff; a daughter, Diane Gillepie of Star City; two brothers, Louie Gillespie of Dallas, Texas, and Buck Gillespie of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Reverend Ray Floyd. Burial will be in Butler (now Butler/Pleasant Hill) by Buie Funeral Home. GILLESPIE, James Albert (1863-1947) James Albert Gillespie, age 84, retired lumber man of Lincoln County, died at the home of his son at 5:45 a.m. today, following an illness of several months. A native of Kentucky, he was born March 1, 1863, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gillespie, moving to Lincoln County as a small boy. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. G.C. Thomasson of San Francisco, Calif.; three sons, George and Louis Gillespie of Star City, and B. M. Gillespie of Norfolk, Va.; fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Butler Baptist Church. Services will be conducted by the Rev. W.J. Sheppard, Baptist Minister from Star City. Burial will be made in Butler Cemetery, with arrangements in charge of the South Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be: James Gillespie, Herman Logue, Marvin L. Thurman, Leo A. Meeks, Doyle C. She was born, November 8, 1898, at the Moscow community near Pine Bluff. She was a member of Daniel Chapel Baptist Church at Tamo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Gipson, and a son. Survivors include a daughter, Lillie E. Gipson Smith of Rialto, California; a sister, Feadoshia Thornton of Tarry; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Arkansas Methodist Newspaper July 10, 1919 page 15 col 1 Etta Lee Glover On March 19, 1919, Miss Etta Lee Glover passed to the land of sunshine. She was born in Lincoln County on April 7, 1892. Her life though shortened by the will of God, was filled with a rare sweet spirit that made all those who knew her love her. And when the message came to her home in Warren (Bradley County), announcing her death at St. Luke's hospital, many were the friends who mourned. She had a very sympathetic nature. No one sympathized with the sick and afflicted more than she, yet during the months of her waning health no one ever heard her complain, and when she was told that her hours on earth were probably few, she said, "Everything is all right." She joined the Methodist Church at 18 years of age and lived a consistent member of the church the remainder of her life. During her girlhood she attended Sunday school and was ever a close student of the Bible. Etta taught in the rural schools of Bradley county for several years. There are boys and girls all over the country who mourn because in her own cheerful way she taught them lessons of honor they will never forget. A brother, a sister, and her father were waiting on the other side to welcome her home. Her mother, three brothers (one of whom is still in France), and three sisters are left behind to mourn her death. He was born September 19, 1916, at Star City, Arkansas, a son of the late William and Martha Keahey Goins. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He served in the Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Helene M. Goins; two sons, William F. Goins of Las Vegas and George A. Goins of Washington; a brother, Jake Goins of Sheridan, Arkansas; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter. Beth was born April 7, 1955, at Star City, a daughter of the late Frank Matthews and Elizabeth Matthews. She was a graduate of Star City High School. She had lived in Mt. Ida and Jefferson County before moving to Fouke in 1988. She attended the First Assembly of God Church in Fouke and was an Intake Officer at the Lantz Lurry Arkansas Juvenile Detention Center. Survivors include three daughters, Wendy Goodner, Stephanie Goodner, and Audrey Goodner, all of Fouke; two sisters, Ann Matthews Whitten of Crossett and Donna Matthews Campbell of Pine Bluff; a grandson, Harrison Roberts of Fouke. HUDSON BRUCE GREEN - LINCOLN LEDGER, December 20, 2000 Hudson Bruce Green, 88, of Star City, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000, at his home near Star City. He was born may 29, 1912, in Lincoln County, a son of the late Benjamin Ebenezer and Sallie Mae Bailey Green. He retired from the grocery store business in Pine Bluff in the early 1980’s. He then farmed cattle near Mountain Home, south of Star City. He was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church in the Little Garnet Community. He served in the Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Curtis Green, Floyd Green, Howard Green, and Vance Green; three sisters, Hazel Yarbrough, Oleta Edwards, and Ruby Glover. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Jean Burr Garrison Green of Star City; two step-daughters, Sherry Ann Morris and Michelle Lucy, both of Star City; a stepson, Mark E. Tucker Koon Griffin, as it appeared in the Pine Bluff Commercial, Wednesday, March 17, 1999 Nova K. Griffin, 89, of Pine Bluff, died March 15, 1999 at Arkansas Convalescent Center. She was born November 9, 1909, at Griffith Springs, a daughter of the late James Young and Mattie Estell Shumake Tucker. She was reared and received her education at Griffith Springs. She lived in the Pine Bluff area since 1968 and was a sitter for many years at Davis Hospital and Jefferson Regional Medical Center. She was a member of south Side Baptist Church and the American Association of Retired Persons. She also enjoyed crocheting and raising plants. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Koon, who died in 1968; her second husband, Lee Griffin, who died in 1974; a brother, J.Y. Tucker; and two sisters, Clara Crowder and Vera Huckabee. Survivors include three brothers, Clyde Tucker of Pine Bluff, Travis Tucker of Heber Springs and Leon Tucker of Lonsdale; and two sisters, Louise Granderson of Pine Bluff, and Vesta Thrash of Hot Springs. She was born May 5, 1940, at Dumas, a daughter of Talmadge Bell Robertson Conway of McGehee and the late Richard Dale Robertson. She was employed at Jefferson Regional Medical Center as a registered nurse. She was a member of the Lakeside United Methodist Church at Pine Bluff, Arkansas Society of Health Educators and Arkansas Nurses Association.
