Here is the copy of the two obits that I got out of my Granny Jackson's old scrapbook. My Granny was born and raised there in Franklin County Arkansas at Wataula and Mountain Top. She was married there her family home on 11-09-23. Her parents were John C. Caire' and Sarah Ellen (Bolin) Caire. His parents were Joseph & Rebecca Emaline (Belt) Caire'. he was born in Paris, France and she was born and raised in Franklin County AR also. What is the website that I can go to look at the Belt index that you were speaking of? I do have pictures of tombstones of our relatives there and would like to share them too with others that are seaching for their family roots also. Just let me know what I can do. Margaret Misee: Charleston - Margaret Harris Misee,
88, of Charleston died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996 in her
home. A member of the Hosanah Freewill Baptist Church,
she lived at Midtown Apartments in Fort Smith for 17
years. She was the widow of Hugh "Bill" Misee.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Smith Mortuary
Chapel in Charleston with burial at Morris Cemetery in
Bloomer under the direction of Smith Mortuary of
Charleston.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Shotzman of
Charleston, a sister, Nellie Griffith of Charleston; a
brother, John C. Harris of Charleston; six
grandchildren, Wesley, Steve, Kelly, Kevin, and Don
Shotzman and Debbie Rhodes; and 12
great-grandchildren;
Pallbearers will be Wesley, Steve, Kelly, Kevin, and
Don Spotzman and Lewis Griffith. The family will visit
with friends tonight at Smith Mortuary Chapel from 7
to 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Fort
Smith Hospice of Hosanah Freewill Baptist Church.

I hope I'm not leading you on the wrong path here. After more research today I may have the last name wrong. My ggrandmother was Minnie Belle WALKER STATON and she was born in Franklin County, in or near Vesta, AR on 15 Oct 1879 and died 16 May of 1938 in Vesta. Married T.F. (Thomas) Staton 23 Dec 1897. They are both buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery. On her death certificate the maiden name for her Mom was very hard to read and I wasn't sure if it said BEARD, BEENE, BEAN or BEAR. First name Rosa. Father was Charles WALKER. That is as much proof in documents that I have. From what I have gathered through census documents and guessing is the father and mother of Charles is James and Sarah from AL and TN.
Now I am thinking it was BEENE and not BEARD. I can go further into what I have but it may not be what your needing. If anything sounds good to you let me know and I will give you all I have but I have a feeling I am leading you astray. As we are both looking at the same County and time frame I will let you know if I see anything with the BEARD surname. Have you tried the newspaper from Ozark? I think it is called the Spectator. They are online.

Mrs. Mattie Jones Malone, age 65, died at her home on
West Market street Thursday.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church
this afternoon, her pastor, Rev. P.S. Rogers, in
charge.Burial was in the Highland cemetery.
Mrs. Malone was born in Seiver county,Arkansas,Jan.
4,1865.She came to this county in 1869, grew up and
married J.M.Malone.When a young woman, she was
converted and joined the Missionary Baptist church, to
which she was ever loyal.She made her home in Ozark
for the last three years.
She is survived by her husband and three children:Mrs.
H. Mason of Oklahoma City;Mr. W. L. Malone of
Seminole; and Mrs. J.M.Hopper of Ozark.

Ralph Nichols

Ralph Nichols, 34, native of Alix, died unexpectedly of a heart attack
Monday evening at his home in Los Angeles, Calif.

A veteran of World War 11, during which he served in the European theater
with an infantry division, Mr. Nichols had lived in California since 1948.
he was born in Alix May 31, 1921, and was a member of the Nazarene church.

Survivors include his father, Frank Nichols of Los Angeles; four brothers,
Jack and Paul Nichols of Alix, bill of Los Angeles and Jim of Covina,
Calif.; and four sisters, Mrs. Agnes McDonald, Miss Marie Nichols and Mrs.
Louise Pesterfield, all of Los Angeles, and Reba Wall of Coal Hill.

Mr. Nichols, who was a member of the 91st Division, was awarded the Bronze
Star. The funeral service will be held in Alix Saturday or Sunday, and
burial will be in Nichols Chapel cemetery.

Ewell Pyron, 97, of Ozark died Saturday, March 25, 2006, in Houston, Texas. He was a retired employee of Arkansas Valley Electric Cooperative and a member of First United Methodist Church in Ozark; Ozark Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite 32nd degree of the Fort Smith Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Castleberry Pyron. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery in Ozark. Burial will be under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Raymond "Ray" Primm, 72, of Russellville died unexpectedly Friday, March 24, 2006, at his home, following illnesses of several years. Born in Alix, he served in two branches of the United States military. He enlisted in the Army at age 16 and served in Korea from November 1950 to June 1951 as part of the 7th Infantry Division, X Corp, 8th Army. A combat infantryman, he fought in the battles of Operation Thunderbolt, Operation Killer, Chinese Spring Offensive, the Hwachon Reservoir campaign and the Battle of Chosin reservoir, where 7,000 U.S. soldiers and marines were surrounded by and battled with an onslaught of 120,000 Chinese soldiers. Ray earned several medals and citations for courage under fire and for physical disabilities incurred in battle. At the time of his death, he was an avid member of "The Chosin Few," an organization of the survivors of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. Local survivors include a brother, Gerald (Jerry) Primm of Mulberry. A rosary service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Russellville. A Celebration of Raymond's Life will be held the following Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., also at St. John's' Catholic Church in Russellville, All friends are invited. The body was cremated under the direction of Shinn Funeral Services and the cremains will be inurned at a later date, with military honors, in the columbarium Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial scholarship fund established in his name at Arkansas Tech University College of Engineering. Boots Runions, 76, of Sallisaw, Okla., died Friday, March 24, 2006, at a Fort Smith hospital. She was co-owner and operator of Garrison Grocery at Kibler. During her lifetime, she modeled in Florida and directed variety shows for the USO in Florida. Formerly of Van Buren, she moved to Sallisaw in 1993 and owned a beauty shop. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sallisaw. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren. Burial was at Highland Cemetery, Ozark, beside the graves of her husband, Charles, and her son, Chuck.

Santel Montel Spann, 18, died Sunday, March 26, 2006, in Russellville. His fiancée, Dionne Rodriguez, is of Ozark. Santel was a graduate of Lakeside High School and attended Arkansas Technical University in Russellville where he majored in Health Information Management. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, Lake Village. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

John Jefferson Blanscet, 91, of Adams, Neb., died Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams. Born in Altus, he moved to Kansas as a young boy to make his home with his uncle and aunt, John and Nora Wells, and family. He attended Kansas Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kan., and taught school in Wilson County, Kan., before turning to farming full-time. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday at the Buffalo Methodist Church, in Chanute, Kans., with burial at High Prairie Cemetery.

Debra Rae Jordan, 49, of Mulberry died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at an area hospital. She was a 1975 graduate of Paris High School, an employee of USA Truck and a former employee of Answer Fort Smith. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ocker Funeral Home in Alma, with burial at New Cemetery in Mulberry.

Pauline Cox, 98, of Hindsville died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at the Northwest Medical Center of Washington County in Springdale. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Hindsville. She was the widow of Paul Edward Cox, who died on June 15, 1982. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday at Brashears Funeral Home Chapel, Huntsville. Graveside services followed at 2 p.m. at Highland Cemetery, Ozark.

Charles Ray Broomfield, 65, of Barling died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at his home. He was a laborer in the concrete industry. Local survivors include a daughter, Deborah Robinson of Coal Hill, and a son, Charles Travis Broomfield of Ozark. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel, Clarksville, with burial at Coal Hill Cemetery.

Herman Haynes, 90, of Charleston died Friday, March 24, 2006, in Charleston. He was a farmer and retired Civil Service employee and a member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston and Masonic Lodge No. 155 of Charleston. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Verna Metcalf, on Aug. 21, 2005. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday at Smith Mortuary Chapel, Charleston. Printed: August 3, 2005 Francis Atha Francis Atha, 52, timber-worker who lived in the Jethro area, was killed instantly Monday in a timber accident near White Rock tower. The tragedy occurred when Mr. Atha was using a power saw to cut down a white oak tree in a canyon about two miles west and south from White Oak tower. The tree was located near a cliff, and working about 200 yards away were John Owens; the assistant foreman, J.A. Williams, and Norman Haught, 13 years old step-son of Mr. Atha, who was working as the water boy. The nearby workers heard the tree fall and about 10 minutes later the boy walked to the edge of the cliff and saw his step-fathers body. Timber workers carried the body 250 years to a timber road, where it was placed on a 6 wheel truck for another half mile to the ambulance. From there, a jeep had to pull the ambulance for two miles to the regular road. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Greers. Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Edna Atha; and three step-children, Norman, and Wanda, 7 and Shirley, 10.

Mr. Pruett died at the home with his daughter-in-law,
Mrs.Sam Pruett, at Denning Saturday at 8AM, after an
illness of several months.
Funeralservices were held Monday conducted by Rev.
T.L. Dickerson.Burial was in the Liberty cemetery
beside his wife.The final service3 was in charge of
the Masonic Order.
Having spent his life in Franklin county,it was with
genuine regret that the news was recieved by his many
friends.He was a quiet unassuming man and possessed
many admirable qualities.In his passing, the county

Mrs. Hirtler, the former Miss Zetta Sanford, is survived by her husband; and infant daughter, Sharon Ruth; the parents, Alva Sanford of Ozark and Mrs. Cordia Sanford of Altus; two brothers, Eugene Stanford of Antioch, Calif., and Jerry Sanford of Altus; and five sisters, Mrs. Verline Sharp of Ela, Colo., Mrs. Mildred Dunmire of Altus, Mrs. Norma Neissl and Mrs. Dorothy Neissl, both of Charleston, and Thelma of the home.

Funeral service for James T. Wade, 67, Mulberry citizen, was held at Mulberry Main Street Baptist church Sunday. Burial was in the Height cemetery.

Pat- I saw this listing below on your web site. Thank you for listing it. Sally Leverett Jones was my great grandmother's younger sister ( my grandmother's name was Minnie Leverett Brookey). I actually met Sally when she was a very old lady. She died in the late 70s and is buried in Alex by Howard- near her parents Joseph and Arizona Leverett. Harman L. Cagle, 64, was found dead of a heart ailment at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lula Fay McKinney, at her home in San Bernardino, Calif., Tuesday morning. He was on a visit at the time. The body will arrive here this morning, but the funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Mr. Cagle, who was born in Texas March 10, 1891, is survived by his wife; three sons, Luther and Thurman of Ozark and Ed of Eldon, Mo.; four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Burcham of Tulsa, Mrs. Delpha may McKinney of Ozark, Miss Betty Ruth of the home and Mrs. Lula McKinney; four brothers, Truman and Arnold of Ozark, Marion of Cecil and Charley of West Fork; one sister, Mrs. Sam Doss of Ozark.

Hughes Marcum, age 75, died at his home at Cass Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock following an attack of double pneumonia. Many of his friends attribute his lack of resistance to serious injuries received when he was attacked by an infuriated deer a year or so ago.

Mr. Marcum professed faith in Christ at 25 and joined the Church to which he remained faithful until death. He was an active member of the Masonic Order, and the position he occupied was proclaimed by the homage paid him in death by that order.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. T.L. Dickerson, Monday. The Masons had charge of the service.

He is survived by 4 children, James of Combs, Thomas, W. L. and Alfred of Cass.

Funeral service for Jefferson Warner Inman, 83, was held at Morgan Hill, Sunday at 3 p.m., and Greers directed.

Mr. Inman, who was born June 20, 1872, in Arkansas, died Sunday at 7:45 a.m., at Turner hospital. He had lived in this county about 30 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frank Lowery and Mrs. Guy Starling, both of Delight; a brother, William of Star Route 3; and a sister, whose name and address were not available.

Lester Greer, native of Franklin County, died Friday in a Los Angeles, Calif., hospital following a cerebral hemorrhage Thursday night.

Mr. Greer, who was about 68 years of age, resided in Orange, Calif., at the time of his death. His wife was Miss Atoka Richardson, also of Ozark, and other survivors include a daughter Elizabeth.

Mr. Greer was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sill Greer, former Ozarkians, who also spent their last years in California.

Champ Patrick, 56, native of Jethro, died may 26 at Fort Dodge, Kans., and commital service was held there May 31 with military rites, according to information received by friends here.

Mr. Patrick, who was born Aug. 8, 1899 was a veteran of World War 1. he had the misfortune of losing both legs in a car and train collision in 1938 and had been confined to a wheel chair since that date.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Norma Freeman of Los Angeles, Calif., and a son, Oscar L. Patrick of Manhattan Beach, Calif., both of whom attended the funeral.

Charles Wesley Huckeby, 51, whose tragic death occurred Saturday will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., at the Alix Nazarene church. Burial here will be in charge of the Greer funeral home.

Mr. Huckeby, widely-known east Franklin county farmer, was burned to death about 1:30 p.m., Saturday, in heat so intense that his body was charred beyond recognition. The tragedy occurred while he was plowing soybeans with his tractor on land south of Alix.

Jack Whitsell, 20 of Watalula, who was hoeing the beans at a distance of 160 yards from Mr. Huckeby, heard his screams and then saw smoke from the tractor. he ran toward him, and meanwhile Mr. Huckeby had raced 60 feet to a spot where water had been standing but had dried into muck. When young Whitsell reached him, his body was a torch, with flames leaping 10 to 12 feet high. The path of his flight was also marked by the singed leaves of bushes as high as 10 feet, visitors to the death-place stated.

Whitsell raced about a mile to the home of Mib Young, and Mr. Young and J.J. Young ran to the body. The boy then ran to the Huckeby home and he and one of the Huckeby sons notified Wallace Key who called local officers.

Sheriff Robert E. Pritchard stated that evidence indicated the explosion was caused by the igniting of gasoline in a gallon can Mr. Huckeby carried on the tractor with him. The tractor blaze, itself, appeared to have originated in the carburetor, since both fuel tank camps remained place. The heat was so intense, however, that even the tires burned from the machine.

Speculation was that Mr. Huckeby, who was said to have only recently started smoking cigarettes, may have accidentally ignited the gasoline in the gallon can.

A native of Oklahoma, he was born Jan.11, 1904, but spent most of his life in this county. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Alta M. Brumlett of Kansas City, Mo., and Effie and Sallie of the home; five sons, Robert H. of Harbor, Ore., Thomas E. of Long Beach, Calif., James F. of Kansas City, Mo., and Charles and Johnny of the home; one sister, Mrs. R.M. Young of Ozark, Route 1; and one grandchild.

OZARK - Robert M. Lessley, 77 of Ozark, Mayor from 1959 to 1964, died Tuesday.

Mr. Lessley was a retired mail carrier and was secretary-treasurer of Franklin County Democratic Committee.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Marie Johnson Lessley: three sons, Edgar Lessley of Ozark, Robert Lessley Jr. of Fort Smith and Bill Lessley of Maryland; two daughters, Mrs. Ada Della Fay Evans of Missouri and Mrs. Cornea Bearden of Ozark: a sister Mrs. Pearl Neighbors of Gravelly (Yell County); nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ozark First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery by Greer Funeral Home.

TURNER—Eliza Jane Turner, nee Bates, was born in Summerset, Pulaski county, Ky, March 13, 1815. She professed religion in early life, and at once attached herself to this Church.
She was married to Moses. S. Turner in Warren county, Tenn., in the year 1833. She moved with her husband to Floyd count, Ga., and thence to Arkansas in 1871. She and her husband at once united with the Church, South, at Oak Grove, Franklin county, Ark.
She died in great peace and in full triumph of the Christian faith, at her home near White Oak Station, Franklin county, Ark., August 10, 1889. She was the mother of twelve children. Four of these preceded her to the Better Land. Eight are still living—four boys and four girls. Six of these belong to the M.E.Church, South. One boy, Alexander, still irreligious, another, Clay, a professor of religion, but has never joined any Church. Her aged husband, Uncle Moses, now far advanced in life—feeble and leaning on his staff full of faith and religious zeal, is patiently waiting the summons of his blessed Lord to be transferred to the “Home of the Soul.” The writer talked with Sister Turner often on the subject of religion—this was her favorite theme. She certainly enjoyed religion and loved the House of God, but for some years previous to her death she was very feeble and not able to attend Church. As she advanced in life, she grew stronger in faith. She was a great sufferer for several weeks before God took her, but she bore her afflictions with great patience and resignation. She was an affectionate wife, devoted mother, kind neighbor, true friend and happy Christian. She talked and sang, prayed and called her children around her and exhorted them to meet her in Heaven. She folded her arms, closed her eyes on all earthly objects, crossed over at the “Old Pilgrim’s Ford,” entered the pearly gates of the City of our God and greeted the loved ones already there, joined in the anthems of the redeemed, to live with God and angels forever. God bless the sorrowing ones.

Mrs., Lucinda C. McKinney, after living one of the prettiest and purest lives ca (sic) this mundane for 90 years and 5 months, crossed over the river of death and is now resting painless under a heavenly shade of happiness.

No more affectionate and loyal mother ever lived.

The deceased passed away Sunday night at 11 o'clock March 5, 1922, at her home in Ozark. She was born in Alabama, September 28, 1831 and came to Arkansas in 1836 with her grandparents and father, Henderson Bourland, and settled near Cravens, this county.

Nov. 2, 1845, Miss Lucinda C. Bourland and John Adams McKinney were married. Five children were born to this couple: Judge W. H. McKinney, of Wynoma, Okla: Miss Vina McKinney, of Ozark: the late C. S. McKinney of St. Louis: Mrs. John W. Duncan, of Mulberry township, and Sterling McKinney, of Long Beach, California. Mrs. McKinney joined the White Oak Cumberland Presbyterian church in the 50's, but later was a member of the Presbyterian church at Ozark. She lived a grand Christian life, devoted to her church, attended regularly as long she was able to do so.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. T. Donnell from the residence Tuesday, March 7, at 10: a. m. and the burial took place in the Highland Cemetery. The body was beautifully laid away, with lovely flowers in evidence.

The pall-bearers were grand-sons, namely: Rufus and Claud Lessley, Harold and H. C. McElroy, Jr., and L. E.. McKinney

Committal service for Howard JONES former Ozark business man, will be conducted at Houston Cemetery at Alix today at 3 P.M. (Oct. 1953).

Mr. Jones who operated a meat market in Ozark in the
1920's, died at his home in Okmulgee, OK., Saturday night.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Leverett JONES; a

"Andrew Dow Tucker

Andrew Dow Tucker was born in Franklin county, Arkansas, June 29, 1873, and died at the home of his mother, Mrs. W. J. Tucker, on East D avenue Monday morning, April 11, 1932. He was stricken as he was asleep with a cerebral hemmorhage from which he never rallied.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the chapel by John T. Lauderdale of Saint Jo, Texas, a family friend since 1895. Interment was in the Waurika cemetery.

When but a child Mr. Tucker came to Texas with his parents, later coming to what is now Jefferson county and locaitng near Petersburg fifty years ago. Thus he has been one of the pioneers of the county.

Mr. Tucker was married to Miss Mary Norris in 1892, and to this union four children were born, the three surviving being W. G. Tucker, Mrs. George Murphy and Mrs. Frank Sanders all of Omtario (Ontario) California.

Aside from the three children Mr. Tucker is survived by his aged mother, with whom he made his home, two brothers, Dave, of Waurika, and R. J., of Sudan Texas and four sisters, Mrs. C. H. Davidson of this city, Mrs. J. D. Hunter of Dallas, and Mrs. S. D. Daily and Mrs. Ivan white of Pomona, California, besides a host of nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Tucker had lived in California for a number of years and also had spent several years of his later life in Texas. Three years ago he came back to Waurika and has since lived here with his mother by whom he will be sadly missed. He has been in ill health for the past several years having suffered a stroke of paralysis four years ago while living in California.

Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hunter, of Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Watson, Jr., and daughter, Kathryn Ann, Mrs. L. A. Armstrong and Hackell Davidson, of Oklahoma City.

Addie May Beeson Harris, 95, of Fort Smith died Sunday, May 26, 2002, in a Fort Smith nursing home. She was a homemaker, a former member of the Altus Methodist Church and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sealy, Texas. She was the widow of Hal Victor Harris Sr.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nichols Chapel Cemetery in Altus under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark. Memorial service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Fort Smith.

She is survived by three daughters, Nina Abernathy of Fort Smith, Clara Schroeder of Sealy, Texas, and Kimie Harris of Midwest City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Ron Going, Shauna Bowlin, Ann Boxeur, Jamie Schroeder, Teri Burnham and Justin and Jason Abernathy; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

ALTUS — Helen Haney, 82, of Altus died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000 at Indian Valley Nursing Home in Fairfield Bay. She was a homemaker and a member of the Alix Assembly of God Church.

OZARK — Grace Lee (Peg) Burrow, 101, of Ozark died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in an Ozark Nursing Home. She was a registered nurse and a member of both the Ozark Presbyterian Church and United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was instrumental in the start up of Turner Hospital in Ozark and the widow of Isham Burrow, former publisher of the Spectator newspaper.

COAL HILL — Mildred C. (O’Neal) Harger, 84, of Coal Hill died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, in an Ozark hospital. She was retired from Union Bakery and the widow of Elvis “Bony” Harger.

ALTUS -- Troy Lee Keathley, 61, of Altus died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, in Fayetteville. He was a retired police chief of Gentry, Lincoln and Elkins, and worked for the Washington County and Prairie County Police Departments. He was a veteran of the Air Force and Marines.

Stokes, another prominent citizen of Hogan Township, Franklin County, was born in North Carolina April 5, 1823, and is the son of John and Jane (Gening) Stokes, both of whom died in Stewart County, Tenn., in 1835. They were married in North Carolina, afterward moved to East Tennessee, from there to Henry County of the same State, and still later to Stewart County, [p.1279] where they passed the remainder of their days.
