(father-in-law to his daughter Florence Kate). The gross value £13.9.0
and the rateable value was £10.15.0. The actual (or estimated) rent was
£18.4.0. At the time it was described as "shop, living room,

1913 Samuel agreed to rent Bradbury Farm, Rawmarsh from Theophilus Percy Ring
of The Rectory, Rawmarsh, Clerk in Holy Orders. Samuel was of

War I)
On
Tuesday 20 February 1917 the Sheffield Daily Telegraph reported under the
headline “TUBERCULOUS BEAST” that Samuel had been
summoned to the Rotherham West Riding Court the day before (Monday) for
depositing for the purpose of preparation for sale unsound meat, in the early
hours of 2 February, and for having an unlicensed slaughter-house. His son
Horace and the local butcher Samuel Hancock were also prosecuted for aiding and
abetting Samuel. In their defence the three men said that the animal had been
suffering for some time and was therefore put out of its agony and they had no
intention of selling the carcase. Although the summons in regard to the
slaughter-house was dismissed, for the other offences Samuel was fined £10, and
Horace and the butcher £5 each. (The Sheffield Daily
Telegraph, Tuesday 20 February 1917)
On
Wednesday 4 April 1917 the Sheffield Daily Telegraph
further reported under the headline “Rotherham Meat Case Appeal”
that Samuel had appealed against the conviction for preparing for sale unsound
meat with the intent to sell it for human consumption, and that his son Horace
and the butcher also appealed against their convictions for aiding and
abetting. The appeal was based on the animal being killed at such an unusual
time of the day owing to it being in great pain and having been suffering from
rheumatism. They said they had no idea that it was tuberculous until the
carcase had been dressed, and after that discovery nothing further was done to
it. The appeal was allowed, with costs. (The Sheffield Daily Telegraph,

On
23 September 1917, Samuel died at Bradbury Farm, Rawmarsh, aged 61 years. He
was a farmer. The cause of death was arteris sclerosis and a cerebral hemorage.

his death, Samuel made a will on 2 February 1915 in which his wife Mary Jane
was appointed executor and sole heir to his estate. Witnesses to the will were
[his son-in-law] William Mullins (a farmer of Manor Farm) and George Bryan (a
miner of Rose Hill, Rawmarsh).
