BROTHER STRUCK

SWINTON MAN BOUND OVER

Leonard Ardron (26), miner, of Bridge Street, Swinton, was at Rotherham on Monday, bound over for a year for having done grievous bodily harm to his brother, Ernest Ardron, of Shaftesbury Square, Rotherham. Defendant was represented by Mr. D. Dunn, solicitor.

Ernest Ardron said that on November 14th he called at his brother’s house at Swinton to see him about a loan which he had made to him. Witness had lent his brother 50s. for the purchase of a gramophone, and had received only 15s. in return. His brother told him that he would receive neither the money owing nor the gramophone and ordered him out of the house. As witness was going his brother struck him on the nose causing a compound fracture.

P.c. Noden said defendant, when interviewed, made the following statement: “I hit him in a temper. I am sorry. The trouble has been going on for three years.”

Defendant, giving evidence, said the loan was made four years ago. When his brother, Ernest Ardron, came to see him he adopted a threatening attitude, “squaring” up to fight. Defendant struck him, and the blow caused his brother to fall on the floor. The compound fracture was caused by the fall.

Defendant was ordered to pay £2 12s. 6d. in costs at the rate of 7s. 6d. a week. (Eckington, Woodhouse and Staveley Express - Saturday 14 December 1935)
