married Cecilia Haughton on 20 December 1902 at the Parish Church of Wombwell
by banns. He was 23, a bachelor and a miner of

on Friday 8 April 1904 the Sheffield Daily Telegraph
reported under the headline “SAD DROWNING CASE AT
WOMBWELL” that Ernest’s wife Cecilia was drowned in the Dearne and
Dove Canal, at Brampton Bierlow on Wednesday night (6 April).

The next day on Saturday 9 April 1904 the Sheffield Daily Telegraph further reported under the
headline “DROWNED BEFORE HER HUSBAND’S EYES” that
an inquest into Cecilia’s death had been held at the Junction Inn, New
Wombwell. A verdict of “Died through jumping into the South Yorkshire Canal
whilst of an unsound mind,” was returned. (The Sheffield Daily Telegraph,

After
the sad and tragic suicide of his first wife earlier in the year Ernest
married Ellen Saunders on 31 October 1904 in the Parish Church of Wath on
Dearne. He was aged 25, a widower and a miner. His
father was also a miner. Ellen was aged 23 and a spinster. Her father was
George Saunders, a miner. Both Ernest and Ellen were of Wath Wood. Witnesses
