In December 1938 it was announced in the House of Commons that in the event of war, a National Register would be taken that listed the personal details of every civilian in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This Register was to be a critical tool in coordinating the war effort at home. It would be used to issue identity cards, organise rationing and more.

On September 3 1939, Prime Minister Chamberlain went to the airwaves to announce to the British people that a state of war existed between their country and Germany. World War II had begun.

In 1939 he married Alice Mabel Hoyland. (Keith Ardron III + GRO ref Rother V. 9c 2412 Sep 1939 – Hoyland)

On 29 September 1939 National Registration Day took place. The register shows Alfred, aged 44, and family living at 79 Queen Street, Swinton:

Alfred died on 1 February 1966 at 32 Brookside, Swinton. He was aged 65 and a retired locomotive driver. The cause of death was a) shock and haemorrhage, b) ruptured aortic aneuryism, c) hypertension. Death was certified by the Coroner of Rotherham after post mortem without inquest. The informant was K.[eith] Ardron, son of 32 Brookside, Swinton. (GRO cert DYA371743 + GRO ref Rother V. 2c 953 Mar 1966 - [aged] 65)

He was then buried on 5 February 1966 at Swinton. (Doncaster Archives – Parish Burials, ref P59-1-C16, pg 41)

Alice Mabel Hoyland (1903 - 1980)
Alice was born on 13 February 1903. (Dob on 1939 Register + death index entry) The GRO birth index only shows an entry for an Alice Emma Hoyland. (GRO ref Doncaster 9c 871 Mar 1903)

My 3rd cousin twice removed was born on xx xx 1941. (Keith Ardron III + GRO ref Rother V 1254 Dec 1941 – Mye) Noting that this is a different surname for his mother than expected on the GRO index.

On xx xx 1969 Keith married Beryl Greasby at Swinton Parish Church. (Keith Ardron III + GRO ref Rother V 2c 1857 Sep 1969 – Greasby)
