In December 1938 it was announced in the House of Commons that in the event of war, a National Register would be taken that listed the personal details of every civilian in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This Register was to be a critical tool in coordinating the war effort at home. It would be used to issue identity cards, organise rationing and more.

Alfred
died on 1 February 1966 at 32 Brookside, Swinton. He was aged 65 and a retired
locomotive driver. The cause of death was a) shock and haemorrhage, b) ruptured
aortic aneuryism, c) hypertension. Death was certified by the Coroner of
Rotherham after post mortem without inquest. The informant was K.[eith]
Ardron, son of 32
He was then buried on 5 February 1966 at Swinton.
