Excellent Page! Looking for information on family memembers James (father) and one his son's Alfred Cook. Alfred Cook was reported to be a leader of a band of Confederate Ranger's on the Missouri-Arkansas border during the Civil War. He was killed by the Federals Jan 12, 1865 near Lead Hill, Ar, I believe he and other members were trapped in a large cave, some surrendered but he refused to come out. His father James was reported to be a "well know secesh", and is reported to probably had given aid and assistance to the Confederate soldiers in SW Missouri. In a report of Maj J.C. Wilber to his headquarters, dated 10 Aug 1862, "We marched within 7 miles of Forsyth, encamped on Swan Creek at James Cook's place, a well known secesh". "I think Cook is a rendezvous for the bushwackers as there was a large lot of cakes and pies prepared for someone besides the family. "I found one Colt's revolver in his possession." (Offical Records of the War of the Rebellion, Ser.1 Vol XIII, 222/23). It seems that most of their action was in defense of thier own neighbors actions because of thier natural sympathies wre with the South. Any direction that you can point me in with research on actions within in Arkansas by the Cook family or others would be greatly appreciated. Thank You RLStine

Researching my 4th great-grandfather, Bowlin BLAKE. Family lore says he died at Vicksburg about 1863. I know he purchased land in Columbia Co. in 1858 and 1860. No one knows if he joined an AR or a TN regiment. I would like to find out more about him. His wife's name was Screna (as spelled on her headstone). She later married a MORROW.

My Great-Grandfather, James Monroe Gilbert, M.D. (b.1845/47, in TN-d.1927, in Saline Co. AR). Dr. Gilbert served in the 7th Alabama Cavalry, Company C, Nixon's Regiment. I understand that Dr. Gilbert may have served as a medical orderly since he was so young. After the war he became a medical doctor and settled in Saline Co., AR. Dr. Gilbert applied for confederate pension in 1915. His second wife, my Great-Grandmother, Sarah N. Hurst Gilbert, applied in 1927. I have researched the AR confederate questionnaires, but there is no reply from Dr. Gilbert.

My g-g-grandfather, James K. Polk WHITLEY served in Company H, 15th Arkansas Infantry Regiment. He enlisted in March, 1862 in Hempstead County and served until the end of the war, when the company disbanded in Marshall, TX in 1865. His friend, W. D. Young, served with him in the same regiment. Young wrote this about J.K. Whitley in an affidavit for Whitley's Texas Confederate Pension application, "I remained in the same company with him, from the time he enlisted. He made a good soldier and learned to relish mule meat at Ft. Hudson, which he ate with seeming fondness for 13 days." Too bad there's not much on the 15th regiment on your site -- My next step is to research Ft. Hudson for clues... Thanks for the great web site and links!
