Additions to graves listed in Turkey Pen Cemetery

Submitted 06/26/2003, by Fred Sitz

1.  Sitz, Marvin B.  Born. 8-10-1885   Died 5-12-1911

2.  Sitz, Andrew Jackson  Born 1851  Died 8-5-1935

3.  Sitz, McCurdy   Born 1882  Died 1915

This area was the home place of my grandfather John P. Sitz and my father Homer Sitz.  I attended the Turkey Pen School which was located just east of the cemetery from 1936 to 1941.  There is a good history of this school published in the History of One Room Schools of Sharp County.  The name of the school was Pleasant Hill School which got nicknamed Turkey Pen.  The cemetery was orginally  property of the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church and members of the Methodist Episcopal Church with property jointly shared.  The church was located at the west end of the cemetery.  The legal description of the property was as follows:  Beginning at the N. E. corner at Pleasant Hill then running 269 yards West to the West line of the SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 30 Tp. 19 N. R. 4 W., thence 100 yards South, thence 269 ya! rds East; thence 100 yards N. to beginning corner of cemetery.  The Warranty Deed was recorded in Book 12, page 525  on December 7, 1921.  The deed was signed by Sarah Pinkston who was my great grandmother.  Most of the Pinkstons on your list were grandchildren of Sarah.
