Please be kind and limit your requests to one or two names per lookup. Don't overwhelm the volunteers by asking for "every listing of the Smith surname". These folks are being very generous with their time. Please remember to thank the volunteers who do lookups for you.

Death (and birth) certificates have been issued in Arkansas since 1914. Keep in mind that compliance wasn't 100% until decades later; some people didn't register these events with the state even after Arkansas made it a requirement to do so. You can obtain birth or death certificates by writing to:

They charge $12.00 per certificate, whether they find your person or not, so try to find out if the death certificate exists before you write to them. Several people on the mailing list have state-wide Arkansas Death Record Index books, so let us know who you're looking for and I'm sure one of us can help.
NOTE: The Ark. Dept. of Health web site says this:

"Arkansas Statute 20-18-305 does not allow public release of death records, which are less than 50 years old. The law does permit release to specific persons who are related to the registrant and to his/her designated representatives, to academic research groups, and to persons who can demonstrate a right to the record."

They do not say exactly which relatives may request a death certificate, so it might be worth calling them to ask.

Please also note that the published Arkansas Death Record Index books only go up to 1948. The advice to have someone do a lookup in the death record index books is simply because compliance was not 100% in the early years, and many people who died between 1914-1948 are missing from the index.
