This picture of Robert Semple Powell is, I believe, from a tintype,. I believe him to be about 30 to 35 years of age in this picture which would date the picture between 1878 and 1883.

Robert Semple Powell, born 24 Feb. 1848, Haywood Co., TN.; died 31 Dec. 1923, Warren, Bradley Co., AR; married 25 Nov. 1869, Bradley Co., AR to Carolina Elizabeth Spears, born 30 July 1850, died 25 July 1892, Bradley Co., AR. Both are buried in Holly Springs Cemetery, near Hermitage, AR.
R. S. Powell was the son of Willie R. Powell and Louisa Virginia Thomson (Thompson), and they are believed to be buried in Holly Springs Cemetery near the large stump at the front of the cemetery with no markers.
According to a web page I read, tintypes were produced in the U. S. from 1856 and became popular in the 1860�s. They remained popular into the 1900�s and as late as 1920�s.

They were all born in Bradley County, AR.
This picture was taken in the living room of the home of Aaron Dixon and Nettie Powell Thompson, Warren, AR, dated in the early 1950�s.
