A grave at Shepherd Cemetery in Fayette Co., AL,
has an old marker at one end "Mary A. Winsted"---at the other end is a newer
marker with "Mary Ann Brooks Winstead Jones". Mary Ann (from Marshall
Co.) was the wife of Giles C. Jones of Walker County (until his death in
the 1850's) and the mother of William W. Jones, M.D., who moved to Fayette
Co., soon after the Civil War. She was the grandmother of Tarley William
Jones, M.D., also of Fayette. My question: who was this Winsted/Winstead who
must have been Mary's next husband?

My great-grandfather George Harvey Polk was born between 1849 and
1861. His parents were Joseph Polk and Nancy Couch, and his siblings were
Nancy, Belle, Frank, William, and Seliam. He may have been born in St.
Clair, County, Illinois or St. Louis, Missouri. The earliest census I've
located him in is in 1900 in Calhoun County, Mississippi. He moved there in
1900 after having lived and married in Mississippi County, Arkansas. He
lived in several counties of Mississippi before moving to Walker County,
Alabama before 1920.
His marriage to my great-grandmother (nee: Pittman) was his second marriage.
He had two children from his first marriage named Pearl and Connie. Pearl
was born in Tennessee and Connie in Kentucky, their births being possibly
between 1895 and 1899. I have not been able to locate Pearl or Connie in any
census year except 1920 where they are young adults living with their
father, George Polk, in Alabama. Either Pearl or Connie may have married and
moved to New York.
I'm trying to find the link between George and his parents, his siblings,
the daughters from his first marriage, and earlier Polk ancestors. Any
information on this line would be greatly appreciated!

I am looking for information about my grandfather,
Richard B. Thomas. The information that I have about him from
family members is that he was born about 1870 in the
Jefferson-Tuscaloosa-Walker County area. In about 1910, he married a
widow, Octavia Parsons Donaldson, the mother of four children. Richard
and Octavia had children Vivian, Richard C., Vida, Garland, and Cloa.
Cloa is my mother. Richard died during the Depession, about 1935.
Richard B. and Octavia are buried in Littleville Cemetery near
Haleyville, Alabama. Richard's ancestors are not buried there, as far
as I know. I have not had an opportunity to visit the cemetery since
becoming interested in death dates.
I am making this query to the Walker County site because
the 1880 United States Federal Census has an entry for Walker County
that might be Richard B. Thomas. Richard Thomas is listed as born in
1869, in Alabama, to Frank Thomas who was born in South Carolina. I
would like to hear from anyone who has information about the Richard B.
Thomas mentioned in the census and, of course, anyone who has
information about my grandfather whether or not he is the one mentioned
in the census.
Also, I would like to learn about cemeteries in Walker County or the
region that have Thomas burials.

old Red Mill school.
My grandfather, G.W. Benson
was the teacher and principal for many years. I believe he was there
in early 1900's.

My Grandfather ,
Stephen W. Williams, married my Grandmother, Sarah M. ( Sallie)
Harbin, in September, 1886 in Walker County. They later lived
and raised their family in Oakman. Both are buried in Day Cemetery.
I have a copy of
their license which is in the courthouse annex in Jasper.
I have been able
to trace my Harbin side back several hundred years to England, but,
at every turn, can not break through the wall on Williams. No obit,
no death certificate, nothing in the 1870 or 1880 census, etc.
Is there anyone
who has knowledge of the "Williams" families that lived in the area
from 1850-1900?

Looking for Lum Williams who married Savannah Sellers in Walker County.
They had 2 children Mavis and Cora. Savannah was later married to A. B.
Cunningham. The girls evidently used the Cunningham name. On Mavis' marriage
license the name Cunningham was marked out and the name Williams was written in.
Savannah was the daughter of Samuel Sellers. Is Lum a nick name for Columbus?
