THE RETURN OF OWNER’S OF LAND

1873: CORNWALL

Source:

Information available CRO and in book form “The return of Owner’s of Land 1873: Cornwall”, Published by R Cleaver & V Palmer, 1990

The return was known as the “Modern Domesday” and came about as a result of Parliamentary allegations that the 1861 census showed there were only 30,000 landowners. It was felt that this was a harmful monopoly.

The figures given for Cornwall were:

Cornwall Population in 1871                          362,343

Inhabited houses                        73,950

No. of Parishes                        217

The addresses given for landowners didn’t always reflect where the land was, but where they were currently resided.  There were not many names mentioned for Breage, a few I have collected were place names known to be from Breage, but could be of duplicate places elsewhere.  As always – check original documents for confirmation.
