Pickens County was created by the Alabama Legislature on December 19, 1819, out of Tuscaloosa County. It was named for General Andrew Pickens of South Carolina, a hero of the Revolution. The first county seat was established at Picken's Courthouse (later called Pickens and Pickensville) and moved to Carrollton in 1830. Neighboring Counties include Fayette, Greene, Lamar, Sumter and Tuscaloosa in Alabama and Lowndes and Noxubee counties in Mississippi.
The Pickens County Genealogical Society was organized March 26, 1979, by a group of people interested in genealogy and local history of Pickens County, Alabama.
The charter members were: Betty Junkin, George Zeanah, Harold Wilson, Doug Sanders, Jr., Kathleen Brown, Mrs. Lon Alexander, Inez Poe, Eugenia Fair, Robert Sibley, Joan Sibley, Alma Caldweld and Sally Kabrick.
Membership is small, but monthly meetings are held regularly. The society has published a lineage chart book and a cemetery census of all white cemeteries in Pickens County in 1983. The library is housed in the Old Gordo Jail (the first Gordo City Hall building). The building itself is on the National Register of Historical Places, having been erected in 1914. All genealogical and historical material is available concerning Pickens County in the genealogy library.

Monthly meetings of the Society are held at the Genealogical Library at 1:00 p.m. the first Thursday of each month.
Pickens County, AL Library of Genealogy Section:
The Pickens County Genealogical Society Library is open for research from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every First and Third Wednesday of the month. The Library of Genealogy is located in the Old Jail in Gordo, Alabama.
Publications The Pickens County Genealogical Society publishes research materials for sale to assist in the support and maintenance of the society and the library. This section will give information about those publications and the price of each. UPDATED 1 MARCH 2005.........
