HOLLISTER Deborah Campbell 16 Nov 1998

I have recently received information about my great grandfather, Mahlon Warner HOLLISTER (b. 1/9/1826 in PA.) that has lead me to do more research. I am wondering if there is anything you might be able to assist with.

We know that he and his new bride, Amelia Lucilla INSLEE were married in NYC, New York and then set sail for Mobile, Alabama in Sept. 1860. We have letters written by Amelia Lucilla to her family in NY through 1862 or so. We knew that Mahlon had been arrested at some point during the war because we have his amnesty paper, dated April 29, 1865. We always were under the impression it may have had something to do with his Northern background. Through all the family stories nothing was ever mentioned about his being a soldier. What we just found out through Jackson, Mississippi (where he had been imprisoned) enquiry was that there was a MW HOLLISTER listed as serving with the 2nd Regiment of Volunteer Militia in Alabama. We, assume because they lived in Mobile, that the regiment came from Mobile. We also know that a daughter was born to them while living in Mobile...Adah Viola HOLLISTER (b. July 5, 1861). After Mahlon's arrest family stories tell us that Amelia and baby Adah left Mobile through the Underground Railroad after his arrest. If there are any kind of leads you could offer us about the regiment, the family, etc. we would greatly appreciate it.

WHITAKER / STRINGFELLOW Dave Shoemaker 5 Oct 1998

Oscar Cramer WHITAKER married Martha STRINGFELLOW in Mobile ca 1860. They had a son, my ancestor Stonewall Jackson WHITAKER who was born in November 1861. Oscar served in the Civil War with the 12th Alabama Infantry. In September 1868, he married another woman in Mississippi, where he raised SJ and several other children.

I would like to find out what became of Martha. Since her parents and at least one brother died of yellow fever before the Civil War, I presume she stayed with Oscar's parents, Dr. and Mrs. William WHITAKER, while Oscar was serving in the war, but can find no trace of her after the birth of SJ. Any information would be welcome. Thanks for your help.

ALEXANDER / DUFRESNE / BADON / LOISEL / NICHOLAS Sharon Bond 10 Aug 1998

Jean Baptiste ALEXANDER and Marie DUFRESNE (listed as a "cassette" / casket / Pelican girl):  m. 1704, Fort Louis, Alabama; had six children:

Jean Baptiste ALEXANDER II, b. 1706 (see below)
Francois ALEXANDER, b. 1708
Phillipe ALEXANDER, b. 1710
Antoine ALEXANDER, b. 1715
Pierre ALEXANDER, b. 1716
Marie Marguerite ALEXANDER, birthdate unknown.

Jean Baptiste ALEXANDER II and Francois Hypolite BADON (1716-1744) were married in 1732 and had four children:

Jean Baptiste ALEXANDER III, b. 1734 (see below)
Charles ALEXANDER, b. 1736
Elizabeth ALEXANDER, date of birth unknown
4th child??

As you can see, these children were very young when their mother died.  She was the daughter of Nicholas BADON, who established Miragouin Plantation near Mobile on 14,00 0 acres of land given to him by the French king.

Jean Baptiste ALEXANDER III and Angelica LOISELwere married, but I have no date.  He is listed in the 1786 census as being a widower with two children and eleven slaves.  His child, Francis ALEXANDER, was born in 1779.  Francis married on January 9, 1800 Isabella NICHOLAS (1784-1824), whose family was from New Orleans, in 1800. Francis died in 1811.  They had a child named Francis who married Anna RESTER in Mobile in 1835.  Isabella is listed on the property tax rolls of Mobile County for the year 1816.

I believe that Francis and Anna were  the parents of my great-grandfather, Carlos F. ALEXANDER of Pearl River County, who applied for a Civil War pension at the age of 75 in the early 1900's.  There is a Francis ALEXANDER buried in an old cemetery in Delisle, Mississippi, just north of Biloxi.  It stands to reason that Francis, whose mother Isabella died when he was 13, may have lived in the New Orleans area since he had relatives there.

I am trying to find the Alexander connection.  Much of what I have given you was researched by a Clifton Alexander in Slidell, Louisiana.  It was shared with me by a cousin I didn't know I had until I started looking!  I also have information on Isabella and on Angelica LOISEL. I need information on Anna RESTER to establish the connection.

I know this is lengthy and probably not at all correctly done for genealogical research, but I wanted you to have it.  I think the Miragouin Plantation would be an interesting archeological find for Mobile.  I know it was on an island and that it was established near Fort Louis de la MobileNicholas BADON was known as Sieur de Miragouin which means Master of Musketeer Plantation.

Please credit Clifton Alexander, whom I do not know, if credit is to be given.  Another researcher. Helen Alexander Clunie, my cousin, is to be credited as well, for she has done a great deal of research in cemeteries and libraries.  I have merely begun to search.  Thank you for your interest and your help.

CORLEY / MILLER Edith Corley 07 Aug 1998

MIZELLE Kathy30 Jul 1998

I'm trying to gather info on my MIZELLE line and certain clues are leading me to Mobile Co., Alabama. My great, great grandmother was Myra Octavia MIZELLE. She had a sister Jennie Emma MIZELLE and three brothers, Will MIZELLE, Frank MIZELLE and Morgan MIZELLE. I know that Myra was born 5-15-1859 and d.1-21-1919. She was married to Harry Lunceford HALL on 10-26-1878 (in Calhoun, Ga., I think). Jennie was an artist and married more times than the family would like to know, but her last husband was a Bruce MARTIN.

Another researcher came across some misc. census records for Mobile Co. 1860 that listed a R. MIZELL, 48 M Carpenter, Isabella,32 and it looks like 5 children, J.E. (my Jennie Emma?), E., M.O.(my Myra Octavia?), J.M., M. (but no mention of Will, Frank or Morgan.

Is there anyone researching this family or at least who could point me in the right direction? I've gotten a little info through Rootsweb. I have photographs of these family members, but no clues as to where they lived. One photo has a tie to New Burnsides, Ill. which I have checked out and there appears to be some sort of link, but I don't know what it is.

LADNER / BRUNEL / COUNAL / SAUCIER /MORIN or MORAN Ruth Stockstill Walker 28 Jul 1998

My grandfather married Desiree MORIN or MORAN so we cover lots of the early coast history but I can always use more. Thank you for anything you can share.
