For those of you that are not familiar with the 1840 Census, only the head of household is listed by name, and that person as well as the rest of the household are included in their respective age brackets. The age brackets are the same for males and females, and are in 5 year increments for the first four, and thereafter in 10 year increments: 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40, etc. The age brackets for free blacks is different, and has been enclosed in parenthesis.
Please keep in mind that anything you find in parenthesis ( ) in this document is on the microfilm. Items enclosed in brackets [ ] are additions made by me. Although I have tried to be as correct as possible, I strongly suggest that you check the microfilm.
