Jones who was a
Baptist Preacher in Fayette
Co. 1850's. He had at least one child: Thomas
Bradley Jones who married Mary
Elizabeth Roberts and
had 3 children born
in FayetteCo., before moving to Texas. The oldest of these 3
children was

am searching for the birth place
of my great grandfather, William L. Long.
All the ancestors on my father's side came from Fayette County.
Many were
born there, but William L. Long
was born in an unknown location in South Carolina before moving to
Fayette.
I have censuses of Fayette County that put him there as a lad and he
was
living with some Berrys,
his mother having remarried into that family. His birth parents'
names were
William B. Long
and Frances E. Henderson.
Frances is
buried in Fayette. I don't know much about William
B. All I know about him is that he was
born in Georgia.
My great
great grand father, John
H. Berry, was born in
Fayette Sept. 29,
1827 and died in Burnet County, Texas, on Oct. 6, 1904. My great
grandfather,
William L. Long,
moved to Burnet County, Texas in 1867 with a group of Berrys.
He married Sarah Elizabeth Berry,
eldest child of George Rufus Berry,
the leader of the group that moved to Burnet Co. George
Rufus, the son of Fayette County pioneer
William C. Berry,
was born in Fayette County Feb. 29, 1828. Sarah
Elizabeth was born in Fayette County in
Mar. 18, 1851.

like this. I am sure it is evident that I am new to the genealogy game
and I am not really organized. At least I hope you can tell that
I am enthusiastic,
if not knowledgeable.

The Davis
and Franklin
lines are fairly easy to trace...DAR...and
work done by Jeannie Newell and her family etc. BUT my Holland
line is another thing. William
came from Pickens Co. AL he was born there
in 1827. That's where the story ends. Can you help shed any
light on the
ilusive Hollands.
I have the centenial newspapers, and I see that you have left W.T. off
of most of your pre-civil war lists
even though he is a cobbler in Fayette. In business and doing
well in 1851.
His partners were J.S. King,
Thomas King,
and James Keenum,
listed were also some slaves. W.T.
recieves a land grant in Gilpen in 1858. Found in the 1860 census
with his
wife Sarah and
daughter Nancy.
Family says he served in the Civil war; if he did I can not find
him. Not
even in the National Archives. I do have his Mexican War
records. Any help
you could be would be great. You are doing a wonderful job on

Nov 1855 unable to serve out term of commissioner. The obituary
shows he
died of flux. His wife was Patience Elizabeth
McClain. Their

It is said
that their daughter married
a man (I don't have his name before me) that designed and perhaps
oversaw
the construction of the Fayette County Courthouse. It is also

Col. McClure
commanded a regiment in the Mexican War. I was told their marriage was
in the US Genweb, but spelled incorrectly. The family is trying
to document
the Regiment in the war. I have contacted a man in Texas to see
if he has

In the list of those buried in
the Hopewell
Primitive Baptist cemetery is
this entry: "Nancy
Gore Franklin Davis, wife of John Hawkins

section - grave unmarked." This raises two very puzzling
questions for
me, and I would be grateful for any light that anyone might be able to
shed on the mystery.
• If the grave is unmarked, what is the reason for
believing that she is buried there?

minister in the obituary of his son-in-law,
and as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church
in the census of 1860.
In the Methodist Archives, however, there
is no record of a John Hawkins Davis.
Why would the wife of a Methodist minister be buried in a Baptist
cemetery?
Could he possibly have been a Baptist minister. Does anyone know
how I
might go about finding out? What are the sources for information
on the
Baptist church in Alabama?

I'm trying to find info about Thomas Poe and his son R.H.
Poe. Thomas' father, Maj James R Poe, fought in the American
Revolution and moved to Fayette Co. late in life around 1823 and is
buried there. I believe Thomas Poe died prior to the Civil
War. R.H. Poe may have been the Roza H Poe who was sheriff
1840-43. I've also read his name was Richard Hampton Poe.
He and many other Poe family members migrated to Arkansas in the

The AL 1830 Census says a John McCain (#197) lived in
Fayette Co. in 1830. Do any of your county historical records

being the progenitor of this line. I particular I am trying to
establish what the relationship was between Alexander Lawrence (born
1802) and Richard Lawrence (possibly his father) and Bartholomew
Lawrence (listed in 1850 Fayette census, born around 1760!!) and get a
good track on the early

who owned a store and a cotton mill at one time in Fayette. He is
the son
of James M. Johnson.
Married Nora Melton.
They moved to Denver Colorado for Nora's
health in 1920. He died in 1944 and she died in 1984.
Now my inquiry:
Starling Johnson settled in the Pilgrims Rest area of Fayette County,
Alabama in the 1840's. Surounding his land was the land belonging
to Lemuel Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, James and John Johnson.
Starling Johnson was married to first Rebecca Ann Crow and their
children were:
William L. Johnson b: 1842 d: June
15th, 1864 21st Al CSA in Virginia.
James M. Johnson b: 1844
John Johnson b: 1846
Mary Catherine Johnson, M: William B. Owens, b: 1849
Robert B. Johnson b: 1854
Starling Johnson b: 1850
Saville (Dillie & Villie) Johnson M: Bloomer Griffin, b: 1861.
Married Second, Hariet C. Hughes Hamby. It is said that she was an
orphan because her father Hughes died and left her mother and two
daughters. She was raised in her grandfather Wilsons home so therefore
her mother must have been a Wilson. She married John Hamby and they had
a son named William (Billy) Hamby. John and Billy died. I don't know
how.
Starling Johnson's first wife Rebecca Ann Crow died a few months after
giving birth to Saville Johnson. Later, Starling married Harriet
C. Hughes Hamby. They had two boys: Julius Glover Johnson and
Drury Bascomb Johnson. In 1873, Starling, Hariet, Julius, Drury
and Saville left Fayette and came back to Georgia. They lived
with relatives in Georgia for five years then purchased land from
William Saterfield in White County, Georgia. Later, Saville
(Villie) returned to Fayette Alabama where she lived out her
life. She, it is told, moved into the home of Mary Ann Crow.
William F. Johnson one of the sons of James M. Johnson visited the
Johnsons in White county Georgia many times. There was much
correspondence. Then the correspondence stopped around the time
William F. and Nora moved to Colorado.
I am interested in finding any descendants of the family of Starling
and Rebecca. I would like to learn more about all the associated
families. If you have information or are a decendant and would
like to learn more about the family, please write.
I have heard from many of you because of another inquiry that I
made. I will share with you and the people of Fayette the
information I have gathered and will gather.

I don't know where you got your information, listed under "Adults
Living in Fayette County Prior to Civil War" [now Soldiers, Statesmen & Scalawags].
It is wrong. I would strongley recommend you remove it,
ASAP. Under James (name spelling is wrong) Handley (Hanly) (Handly)
served in the union Army is correct, however he did not desert, and a
matter of record he was in the Hospital when his unit was moved.
Also, his date of birth is 1840. He had two brothers who were in
the same unit, William Payton Handley and Irvin Handley. Irvin
was killed at the battle of Shiloh in Tenn. I don't see any of
that on your web-site. Is it because they were in the Union
Army! James Handley was my ggGrandfather and I want that off, and
I will return to check on it.

of the committee and we need all the articles we can get on families

with these books as they are doing one in Etowah county now. If
your ancestors were in the county before 1870 you are allowed 1000
words and 2 stories (1000 each) and 2 pictures. If after 1870,
half that amount of both. I am very excited about this

I promised people in Fayette County that I would publish this material
a long time ago and am just now getting around to it. I have
quite a bit of information on the descendants of Lewellen Moore and
Priscilla Thornton - many of his descendants still live in the
area. I would love to be in touch with them. I'm not sure
how I will handle this. I do not intend to put living people on
the web or anything that would be a security risk. I am only

Searching for ancestors, descendants of Benjamin DENNIS b. 17 Mar 1837 d. 10
Nov 1921 in Beaverton, Lamar Co., AL. He lived and possibly was
born in Fayette Co. moving to Lamar after the Civil War possibly as
late as 1870-1875. He married Mary Bunetta or Mary Elizabeth WHITE b. 01 Jun 1838
possibly in Fayette Co. She was daughter of Jack WHITE. She
died 12 Aug 1910 in Beaverton, Lamar Co., AL. Benjamin was also
married to a Davis.

Looking for information on William Dodds b. April 12, 1812, in
Georgia. Looking for any information re: parents, brothers and
sisters. He was married first to Eleanor (Ellinor) and 2nd to
Minerva Caroline Mullenax
on June 23, 1860. Children included Joseph A. Dodds and his twin
Jonathan A. Dodds, both born May 22, 1868, in Fayette Co.,
AL. Also any information regarding the Hiram Jackson
Mullenax, the father of Minerva.

My gg grandfather Allen Banister
and his first wife Martha Whatley
were counted in Fayette Co. on the 1850 census. In 1860 he was in
Marion Co. with 2nd wife Amanda or Manda. I believe Martha had a
child, Martha Jane in 1858, and maybe Amanda had Josephine in
1859. Really, I hope Josephine was Martha's and Amanda's first
was John Allen Banister (Bannister)
born in 1864. I would like any places, dates, etc. for Allen's
marriage to either wife. (I don't know Amanda's last name, but I
think she was my gg grandmother. Allen also had a third wife
Elmira.) Also would like Martha's death information -- date etc.

I had a lot of questions when I placed the query. I have a
copy of the "Newman McCollum"
book which starts with Henry McCollum c.1732 Scotland. His son
Newman b. 1774 Camden Dist. SC came to Fayette Co. in 1824. He is
the father of James K. McCollum, the rep. you have listed in People in
Fayette Co. prior to the Civil War. I will be glad to do lookups on
McCollums. The lady that compiled the information for this book
spent 5 years gathering information and mailed out over 12,000
letters. There are many related families listed, the index is
over 100 pages.
The Newman McCollum Book is almost 500 pages with a 100-page
index. Sorry, but I do not have it computerized. A copy of
this book is at the Winfield Library in Marion Co. and I have been
informed that a copy is at the Fayette Library. Major surname
listings include: BOX (one page in the index), BROWN (one page),
DILLARD (one page), HOLLINGSWORTH (four pages), McCALEB (three and 1/2
pages), McCOLLUM (eleven pages), McDONALD (one and 1/2 pages), NICHOLS
(two pages), PATTERSON (one page), SMITH (one page) and TUCKER (one
page). Most of these families are in Fayette and Marion
Counties.
I am a novice at genealogy and in the use of computers. I've been
very lucky in the genealogy research, and I'm learning the computer as
fast as I can. I'd love to post a Family Page, but give me just a
little more time to learn what I am doing. Thanks for your

My gggrandfather Howell Andrew Watkins was born in Fayette
County December 25, 1843. He served in the Civil War as a member
of Capt. Freeman's Prison Guards formed in Tuscaloosa. I have
much info on him and his siblings but very little on his father (Howell
Nathan "Malcomb" Watkins) or
mother. I would like to have his info included in your list of
Adult Persons in Fayette Co. prior to Civil War. Thanks.

I am researching the following sunames in Fayette Co, from 1850-the
present: Cobb, Ward(e), Stillman, Culbertson (Cuthbertson), Taylor and Freeman.
I am also compiling a roster of all men who served in the 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, CSA
... which was primarily raised in Fayette Co. This will
eventually be placed in its own website and available for researchers
at anytime. Please include as much "confirmed" military
information on the soldier as possible ... Company, enlistment date ...
died/survived the war ... promotions ... wounded/POW ... etc.

I am a descendent of James Franklin Willis (b. May 12, 1853 in
AL). He is the only child (best I can determine) of Amy Collins (b. 1826 in
SC). I do not know who his father is but I believe he died before
1870. James Franklin Willis married Mary Jane Buckner (b. Jan. 20, 1856)
on July 14, 1872 in Fayette. He became an ordained Baptist
minister Fayette in June 1888. Frank and Mary had the following
children: Zilda, Margaretta, John William, Ruffis, Zedick Hamilton
(Hamp), Tomy. Frank died in 1926 in Fayette. I am
interested in information about James Franklin and his parents. I
would like to make contact with someone researching any part of this
line.

I am researching the Daniel J Gartman family that lived
in this county for some time around the 1850-1860 time period. I
was told that Daniel J Gartman was killed in the civil war and his
death place is listed as Camp Nelson, Ky. He married Elizabeth A (Tucker?) Fayette County on
July 24, 1853. She later married a man named Pruitt.
