~ Deed of Gift: Morton to M.E. Church ~

This is an old deed dated May 3, 1877, for one-half acre of land to be used for "the Methodist Episcopal Church known as Ebel." The sanctuary was located on what is now County Road 87 in S9-T14S-R12W), about 12 miles north of Fayette. There is no longer a church there.
| State of Alabama } Fayette County } Know all men by these presents that I Jas B. Morton for and in consideration of the friendship I intertain [sic] for the Methodist Episcopal Church, Do hereby give, grant and convey unto the Methodist Episcopal Church known as Ebel, and located in SW¼ of NE¼ of section nine T 14 R 12, one half acre of land upon which said church is located To have and to hold to the said church so long as it is occupied and organized as such church / When the said church house is aban- doned and no longer used for such church purposes then and in that case the land is to revert to the donar [sic] In testimonia [sic] whereof I have hereunty [sic] set my hand and seal this the 3rd day of May 1877 J.B. The deed was dated and signed by my great-great-grandfather, James B. MORTON. He was married to Margaret Ann HAMM. Their daughter, Sarah Florentine "Tinie" MORTON, married William Wiley SMITH. Sarah and William had one son, William Dilmus SMITH, who married Viola MORRIS. Dilmus and Viola were my grandparents. They all lived in Fayette County.
