According
to the Alabama
Department of Archives & History: "This
series was created in accordance with an act passed on March 2, 1867,
'to provide for a more efficient government of the rebel States,' and
particularly to extend suffrage to the millions of freedmen across the
south. All adult black and white males who had sworn an oath of
loyalty
to the United States were eligible to register to vote."
The register was supposed to include the person's name; race; length of
residence in the state, county and precinct; nativity (place
of birth); and the book and page where his oath was
recorded. Unfortunately, information
regarding residency and nativity was not
recorded in Fayette County, so the following lists are helpful only in
establishing where an individual lived at the time of
registration. Due to the poor quality of the microfilmed records,
many of the names were unreadable. If you have access to the
original records (or a better microfilm), please take the time to
