The Hawkins & Holladay Familes of Escambia
County, AL
William Hawkins, Jr. b. abt 1825 in Conecuh now Lowndes County,
Alabama, was the son of William Hawkins who was the son of Stephen Hawkins.
William, Jr. married Elizabeth Adams and in January of 1845, their first
child, a daughter, Martha Margaret Hawkins was born. Martha married William
Jefferson Holladay on July 3, 1860. A second daughter was born two years
later and named Lavinia. Lavinia died as a young child. Next there was
Marianna who married John Hobbie and later moved to Escambia County. Elizabeth,
the next child, never married and later moved to Escambia County. The next
child was a son named John of which nothing is known at this time. The
youngest child named Thomas Franklin Hawkins married Emma Frost. It seems
to have been his influence that probably caused family members to migrate
to Escambia County.
William Jefferson Holladay was born about 1833 and was the son
of James Holladay and Catherine Acreman. The Holladay family was also settled
in Lowndes County. Two of William's brothers, Nathan Floyd Holladay and
James Henry Holladay, married cousins of Martha Margaret Hawkins. They
were Frances "Fannie" Hawkins and Martha Jane Hawkins, respectively. In
later years, the Hawkins clan and Holladays were again neighbors at Brewton,

This particular Hawkins family connects to my direct Hawkins line.
The Holladay family connects to my husband's Cutts line. I do have additional
info on these families, thanks to several newly found Hawkins cousins:
Mary Ann Nichols, Susan Riggs, Joyce Bodiker, and Marry Fronden. They have
been gracious enough to share their hard earned research with me. Between
us all we have gathered a fairly large amount of info. My source for the
body of this information is "Holladay Special - The Family of William Jefferson
Holladay" by Herbert Weaver.
