THAMES, John J. (Private, Company B 6th Alabama Infantry
Regiment) John
James Thames was born on September 17, 1834 in Talbotton, Talbot County,
Georgia to Thomas John Thames from North Carolina and Levinia "Viney"
Aaron
from Randolph County, Georgia. He married Nancy Ann Peacock of Pulaski
County, Georgia in Randolph County, Georgia on December 18, 1853. He and
Nancy had two daughters, Amanda and Theodosia, in Georgia before moving to
Dale County, Alabama in 1859 where several of his Thames and his wife's
Peacock kin had already moved.
On March 4,1862 John and Nancy's daughter, Levinia, was born. The next day
John enlisted in the Sixth Alabama Infantry, Company B, at Abbeville,
Alabama. He changed his mind about going with the Sixth Regiment and instead
joined as a Private for three years or the war on March 8, 1962 along with
Nancy's brother, James A. Peacock, (who was married to John's sister, Mary
Jane Thames), into the 33rd Alabama Infantry Regiment Company "G" ,
"The
Daleville Blues", which was being formed at Daleville, Dale County, Alabama
near their home. John later said, in the 1907 Covington County, Alabama
census, that he didn't leave with the regiment until March 15, 1862. He was
27 years old.
After the fighting at Perryville, Kentucky Company "G" was occupying
the second boxcar on the train south of Cleveland, Tennessee when it derailed.
Many of soldiers were riding on top of the boxcars as was usual and that may have contributed to the numbers killed in the wreck. In this wreck John
James Thames received a leg broken in two places near the hip. Possibly John was riding on the top of the boxcar. He was with the 67 soldiers taken to
the hospital in Cleveland where he remained until Christmas eve of 1862 when he was furloughed to Daleville by order of the hospital surgeon to recover.
He never fully recovered and walked with crutches the rest of his life. He
was kept on the roles until his discharge at Eufaula, Alabama. He later drew
a pension for his war service.
John's family were owners of a lot of land in the southern part of Alabama and northern Florida. He had purchased land from the U.S. Land office as
early as 1860 and he added to it after the end of the war. He and Nancy had a son, John Alexander, in 1863, Thomas Jefferson, in 1866, Lincy Ann Dancy
Dan, in 1868, Timpay in 1872, Susan Ann Missouri, in 1874, and William Allin, in 1879.
His wife, Nancy, died in 1898 and John moved to Covington County, Alabama and remarried in 1899 to Arlinoche
Coroxton. He then moved to Laurel Hill,
Florida and lived there until he became feeble in 1922 when he moved to Samson, Geneva County, Alabama with his grandson. He died there on January
25, 1923 at the age of 89 years. He is buried south of New Brockton, Coffee County, Alabama at Bethany Baptist Church where he was one of the first
deacons and representatives to the regional Baptist conference. And the church that his father, Reverend Thomas John Thames began in 1884 and

There is a book: "A Revised History of the 33d Ala Inf Rgt" by
L.B. Williams of Auburn; unfortunately all it states
is: H. Helms, Pvt, Co A, enlisted at Elba Sep 7, 1863; clothing
requisition,
Mar 12, 1864; the 33d was in a real knock-down-drag-out at Resaca,
Ga on 14-15 May 1865; 400 Confederate
soldiers killed there are buried in unmarked graves at the Confederate
Cemetery, Resaca; I have heard that
some few have been identified lately.

I do not have a listing for Henry T. or
H.T. Long as having served from any
Ala county; T.E. Long you you spoke of would have been from or at least,
enlisted in Barbour: served as Pvt,
Co B, 4th Bn, Hilliard's Legion and
Pvt, Kolb's Btry, Ala Lgt Arty; there
was a Thomas Long, Co B, 39th
Ala Inf who also would have been
from the county; he may be T.E.,
can't tell for sure as the Co B
roster I have is incomplete; if Terri
sees this, sure she can shed some
light on it.
There were more than a dozen Long's
that I know of who served from Barbour
alone, and a pure tub full from other
counties which makes them somewhat
difficult to research.

I had penciled a note KIA, but have no
idea where that information was found;
somewhere I have seen Theopolis, Jr,
could this be him? there were five
other Floyd's from Barbour County in
Co G of the 29th Ala, but have no
idea if/how they were connected.

captured Franklin, imprisoned Camp
Douglas; he stated in the 1907 Census
he was George Washington Peacock,
b. Dale County, served as Pvt, Co B,
33d Ala Inf Rgt until captured at
Franklin.
Montgomery Independent Rifles was formed and started training in 1860 as a
local unit in Montgomery County Alabama and enlisted May 6, 1861 as Company
D 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Became Company E 6th Alabama at
reorganization in March-April 1862.

Benjamin Brazell stated
on the 1907 Census that he served as Pvt, Co H, 33d Ala Inf Rgt but I do not
find that to be the case; he does not appear at the Natl Archives or in the
33d Rgtl History as having served with the 33d; records indicate that
he served as Pvt, Co D, 53d Ala Partisan Rangers (53d Ala Cav Rgt)
Co D of the 53d was raised at Barnes Crossroads in Dale in Aug 1863; a note
states his wife applied
for a pension in Houston County; I have not found him buried in Dale;
if you find anything further, would sure like to hear about it; incidentally,
Co H of the 33d was made-up almost exclusively of men from Butler.

Newton March 2, 1864 as 1st Lieutenant,
Company K, 4th Alabama Reserves; paroled at Columbus, Ga. in 1865; *this was one
of the oldest Confederate soldiers then
living in Dale County, he was the father of Thomas J. Fain.

Yes James is buried at Newton; there
is a James E. Edwards there, also a
Veteran, b. I think in Ala and served
as a Lt in the 15th Ala; that may be
where the confusion arises; had me
fooled at one time.
