MARSH, William (Private, Company K, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment) was born to Robert and Nancy Caldwell Marsh sometime after 1825. According to both families' folklore, he married Susan Johnson, daughter of Joel and Polly Elliott ca. 1845. William and Susan blessed this county with five sons, Houston H., Joel Robert, Wesley, John N. and James L. Marsh. Being typical "rednecks", they scratched out a living near the river in the Nectar community. If they were alive today, I believe they would consider the term an honor. They instilled in their children (and thereby their descendants) a sincere sense of family, duty and responsibility. Grandpa William demonstrated these traits when he enlisted in the 29th Alabama Infantry, CSA Feb. 5, 1863 at Blount Springs. He was going to protect the only way of life he had ever or ever would know. When his unit arrived at Mobile, he was met with the horrible conditions of war-hunger and disease. On May 27, 1863, he made his way home to his family and his life. He found it disintegrating away-his buildings were falling down in disrepair and his fields were disappearing into the weeds. Desperate to keep his family going and still avoid the soldiers, he donned Susan's clothes and bonnet and headed for the fields. He told Houston and Joel to watch for the soldiers while he worked. They were only small boys and the war was far from their reality. But it soon came crashing in on their world. The soldiers came and escorted William back to his unit. The boys never saw their father again. William was transferred to the 6th Alabama Infantry in Norton, Virginia November 15, 1863. He took part in Jubal Early's attack on Washington, DC. One account says this unit was one of the firsts to attack the ramparts of this city, their bullets narrowly missing Abe Lincoln when he was observing the battle. General Early retreated to the Blue Ridge Mountains. and crossed the Shenandoah River to Berryville, Virginia. William Marsh met his maker on the battlefield of a Virginia plantation called Cool Springs on July 18, 1864. A memorial marker for him has been placed at Nectar Cemetery near his sons. After the war, Susan Marsh married John B. Cheshire on May 13, 1867. She is believed to have died ca. 1873. Cheshire sold the last of the land that year and moved to Arkansas. On the 1880 Blount County Alabama Census, the two youngest Marsh sons are farmed out to their uncles. John is with Robert L. Marsh and James L. is with Griffin Marsh. Houston married Julia J. Walker; Joel married Sarah Elizabeth Jenkins, daughter of Thomas H. and Mary E. Jenkins; and Wesley married Sarah's sister Martha Raney Jenkins.
