  • BETHANY PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY
    Elba, Coffee County, Alabama
On Highway 166 (out from Elba) a few miles before Danley's Crossroads. It is a small white church with two front doors. There is one grave by the side of the road.
Special thanks to Ann Vaughn Richards

    • Wise, Columbus Monroe b: 1861 Alabama
      • My father (Charles Frederick Vaughan, b. 1915) told us that his grandmother's first husband (Columbus Monroe Wise) was buried in the lone grave at Bethany Primitive Baptist Church. Before my father died in 1993, we made a trip to the grave and he explained that in the earlier years, there was a small structure over the grave. He called it a house.
My father's grandmother was Martha Ann Missouri Gatlin and her first husband was Columbus Monroe Wise. Mr. Wise, as my father told it, went out after dark to cut some sugar cane for his children. He was bitten by a rattlesnake and died. Before he died, he requested that he be buried by the road at the church so he could watch the people go by.
After Mr. Wise died, Martha Ann Missouri Gatlin Wise married Angus Caldwell Vaughan. I am pasting the outline descendant tree below.
Phyllis, I have no way of knowing if this information is correct or not. I can only say that my father was relating what he had been told. I do know that he never questioned the story.

    • Segars/Siggers, Jessie C. (Jesse Claude Segars) b: Dec 25, 1901 d: Sep 31, 1941 Submited by Jerry
NOTE: Jesse Claude Segars was the son of Jonas J. Segars and Margaret MARTIN Segars. He died in Gibson Hospital, Enterprise, Alabama on September 29, 1941 of a bleeding ucler. He had brothers; Lewis who died December 2, 1933 of acute indigestion and was buried (apparently in an unmarked grave) at Bethany; John W. Segars who drowned while swimming in a creek on August 25, 1913 and was buried at New Home Cemetery, Coffee County, Alabama; Allen Segars who was born November 28, 1907 and died of a heart attack on March 15, 1948 and was buried (apparently in an unmarked grave) at Bethany, and George Segars. The mother of these men was Margaret Martin who died August 13, 1917 as a result of being struck by lightning at age fifty years four months. Jonas and Margaret's burial site is undetermined. Jonas was twenty-two years older than Margaret, whom he married in Coffee County, Alabama on January 03, 1885 and may have had a previous marrriage. In spite of the information contained on his death certificate, John W. Segars born October 03, 1881, according to his marker at New Home (drowning victim above), may have been the son of Jonas J. and that previous marriage. This lineage and information is verified from death certificates and census reports.

  • HARDSHELL CEMETERY
From Lowe's in Enterprise follow Highway 167 towards Troy. About six miles out, turn left onto Highway 51, and make an immediate right onto County Road 255. You will pass Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church on your left, slow down for Hardshell Cemetery is next door. The cemetery is marked with a beautiful, large, highly polished piece of black marble with the words Hardshell Cemetery and New Brockton written on its face. On the highway, there will be a green with white writing road marker reading Hardshell Cemetery near the end of cemetery as you pass it. The reverse of the beautiful black marble marker has an image of Mr. March Fourth "Forth" McGowan with the Ameican flag and family information inscribed. This marker was sponsored by his great-nephew Mr. Chester Higgins, Jr.
Hardshell Cemetery was photographed and posted by Phyllis Jeannae Kwanja "Sis" Owens.

This submission is excerpt from the
    Tracking Your Roots website.

Located 2.7 miles down Coffee County Road 401 from County Road 141, in the Curtis Community of Coffee County Alabama.
Surveyed by Patricia Foley Gibson on October 18, 1999.

All inscriptions are noted as they were found with the exceptions of using the words, Birth & Died, in place of B & D. My personal notes and notes as to how they relate with others in this cemetery are in Italic.

    Row 1

    • Jordan, Elizabeth- In memory of Elizabeth, wife of William Jordan. Died Aug. 14, 1894. Age 75 years.
    • Lester, Albert - son of G.R. & L. B. Rhodes. Born 3-15-1904 Died 5-1-1904

    Row 2

    • Harrison, B.F. - Son of Noah & M.F. Born 12-31-1901 Died 9-24-1902.
    • Harrison, John - Son of Noah & M.F. Born 9-18-1891 Died 10-17-1895.
    • Grimes, J.W. - Born 11-6-1881 Died 6-19-1883. This is the son of Joshua English & Charity Foley Grimes.

    Row 3

    • Foley, Mary - 1819 Died 10-12-1914. This is the mother of Charity Grimes who has 3 of her children buried here. Also Mary's son John has a grandchild, by his daughter Julie Foley Rowell (infant of Mr & Mrs J.C. Rowell) , buired here. Mary's husband Elijah Foley died on his way home from the Civil War. The exact location of his grave is unknown but it is believed to be in Pollard, Al.

    Row 4

    • Bowse, infant dau. of S.M. & L.E. Bowe Died 5-9-1887. Stephen & Laura Ellen (Caldwell) are burried at the Damacus Cemetery in Coffee County, Alabama. They had a son who practiced medicine in Elba for many years. Per Charles Caldwell, Elpaso, TX.
    • Caldwell, Susan Russell Beckham - Born. 5-10-1812 in Jones Cty, Ga. Died 12-27-1901 in Coffee Cty, AL. Wife of Henry Allen Caldwell

    • Caldwell, Charles James - Born 7-14-1864 Died 5-19-1884. Son of Henry & Susan Caldwell, listed above. Per Charles Caldwell, Elpaso, TX.
The above 4 Caldwell graves each had a second tombstone.. The only difference seems to be the inscription of places of birth & death and that they were much newer. These are the oldest 2 graves in the cemetery. How are they related to the Grimes? Or are they?

    Row 5

    • Rowell, infant of Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Rowell. Born 4-10-1895 Died 5-25-1895. This would be James Crawford Rowell & Julie Frances Foley Rowell.

    • Grimes, John W. - Born 5-17-1820 Died 9-6-1886.

The above John W. & Julie A. Grimes were the parents of Martha F Harrison, wife of Noah Harrison. Martha and 3 of their children are also buried here. Noah's gravesite is unknown to me at this time. They were also the parents of Joshua English Grimes who married Charity Adeline (Sis) Foley, (they have 3 children buried here ) & Sarah Elizabeth Grimes who married Charitys brother John S. • Grimes, Luana S. - Mother. Born 9-17-1868 Died 1-18-1901. There is also another tombstone propped up against the fence for her that reads: Luana S. Grimes wife of J.F. Grimes born 9-17-1868 died 1-18-1901.
    • Grimes, Joshua Dewy - son of J.E. & C. A. Grimes. Born 2-20-1899 Died 11-29-1900.
    • Grimes, Nolia Lee - dau of J.E. & C. A. Grimes. Born 8-15-1891 Died 6-21-1900.

    McIntosh Cemetery
This cemetery in not marked or named on the Coffee County map.

In an article (Book unknown at this time) called "Battle Branch Echoes" about "Ward's Raiders" an outlaw band during the Civil War, John Clark and another man were captured after the outlaws burned the Coffee County Courthouse. John Clark tried to escape and was shot but the other man was hanged. And both men were buried side by side in shallow graves, near the site of the hanging (near the Pea River bridge in Elba). They were both buried in disgrace with there boots on and their toes above ground. John Clark's father got permission and removed the bodies to Corinth Cemetery and re-interred them side by side in the almost abandoned cemetery presently known as McIntosh Cemetery, which is located between Baton's Cross Roads and Double Bridges Creek in Coffee County. The Clark family were so humiliated over what John had done and the way he had died that they soon sold their farm and left Alabama. We believe the below cemetery is the one referred to in the above article.

Information compiled from cemetery interment markers on 31 JAN 1998 by Joan Hallford Hidle.

Location: Go west on Hwy 636 from Batten's Cross Roads. Turn left on County Road 642. Go about 30 yards and turn right on County Road 641. Go one mile. The cemetery in a field,on the right and in a clump of trees and brush and briars.

  • OLD FRIENDSHIP CEMETERY (ALSO KNOWN AS RICHBURG CEMETERY)
    Per Willie
"Richburg Cemetery is listed in the cemetery book as "Old Friendship Church Cemetery". It is now called Richburg Cemetery after Richburg community. The sign on the cemetery states "Richburg Cemetery". The cemetery was originally attached to the Old Friendship Methodist Church. The church is now defunct. What little remained of the church was torn down several years ago. It was one of the earliest churches in the county.......Willie"

    • Chihoko b: March 14, 1936 d: September 6, 1993 Buried with Jessie and Maggie PETTUS Submitted by Michael Griswold
      • DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING PERTAINING TO THIS GRAVE? Phyllis J. K. Owens
        • April 21, 2008~~One theory of who Chihoko might actually be:
          Mr. Jerry L. Segars theorizes:
On the partial cemetery listing for Old Tabernacle Methodist Church Cemetery, Coffee County, Alabama you asked if anyone knew anything about the grave marked "Chihoko" with Jessie and Maggie Pettus. My short answer is no, but I did notice that Chihoko is a common Japanese lady's name. In fact there are over one hundred thirty entries on Ancestry.com. I noticed that Jessie Pettus' son Aubrey was a WWII veteran. Chihoko was born in 1936 and would have been less than ten years of age at war's end. Is it possible that she was and adopted war orphan?
There are so many Griswold's buried at Old Tabernacle, that I searched for Chihoko Griswold. The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) produced the following:

Chihoko Griswold Social Security Number 456-41-8723, born 14 March 1936, died 6 September 1993. NOTE: The SSDI Record dates are a perfect match for the cemetery marker dates at Old Tabernacle. The SSAN card was issued in Texas in 1977.
Perhaps if someone could check the marriage records in Coffee County for a Griswold and Chihoko about 1960 or prior. Also Searcy Funeral Home may have a record of her funeral in 1993 which would give a clue to her parents and/or husband.

  • OLD TOWN/TEEL CEMETERY
Directions per Melissa Mathews: From Perry's Store (intersection of Hwys. 189 and 134), travel 189 south approximately 2 miles. Turn on the first paved road to the left (County Road 467). Travel approximately 1.5 miles on 467 and take a right on a dirt road. I'm not certain what the road number is, but the road is at the bottom of a steep hill (you'll notice a sign that prohibits traffic on the dirt road after sundown). This dirt road will end at the cemeteries.

This cemetery is located approx. 5mi from Kinston, AL. Two more ancient cemetaries are in the same general area as the main Old Town/Teel Cemetery which is in two parts only a few yards from each other. One is a slave cemetery and has no markers other than bricks. The other is a family cemetery of which only two stones still stand. They are:

    • Brundage, Q.P. s/o R.B. Apr 1915-Jan 1916
      Footstone bearing initials O.B.B.
    • (headstone broken and illegible on 2d stone)

  • OLD WISE CEMETERY
Compiled and contributed by: Glenn Farris, Michael & Jo Ann Wise MAY 2000

Location: To get to this cemetery from the Pea River Bridge-if you are coming from town-turn right onto CR 401 (aka Old Samson Rd) after crossing the bridge. Follow this road 1.9 miles and turn right on CR 410 (aka Old River Rd). Go 1.2mi and turn right into the driveway of a hunting lease, there are white rocks at the beginning of this drive. (If you are coming down Old River Rd from the other direction the cemetery is about 1.5 mi from the New Haven Bpt. Church. Walk back in about 100-150 yards. There will be a hunter's blind on the right and a food crop on the left-turn left and follow the edge of the crop about 50 yards and look into the trees on the left. We found 8 stones left. With the spacing of the graves my guess is that there are more graves there. (Notes are Jo Ann's)

  • SIMMONS CEMETERY/OLD SIMMONS CEMETERY
In the woods on private property off Highway 127 in Coffee County, Alabama

    • Simmons, Emaline HURST (adult grave)
    • Simmons, Mary Ann (small grave)
    • Simmons, Nancy Ann (small grave)
    • Simmons, Sara Ann (small grave)
    • Simmons, Thomas Washington (adult grave)
The three children all died before second birthday.

THIS CEMETERY REALLY NEEDS SOME LOVING!! The headstones are in bad shape, but readable. They date back to the 1850's.

  • TEEL/OLD TOWN CEMETERY
