Agencies and Institutions
The Catholic Church is more than people and churches. Did a relative attend St
Michael's after the death of his parents? Give a child to or adopt a child from
St Joseph's? Die in the Maloney Home or Marion Hospital? Attend Kings,
Misericordia, Marywood or St Thomas College? A variety social service agencies
and institutions were created within the diocese to meet the needs of our
ancestors. Many remain in existence today, though their missions may have
changed, while others have closed when their original need no longer existed.
Additionally there were schools, cemeteries, and other facilities created on a
parochial level.

St Joseph's Foundling Home
- opened in 1890 under the auspices of the IHM. In operation today as St
Joseph's Center. Has complete records, but is governed by Pennsylvania's
confidentiality laws concerning adoptions.
[For example, if your relative wasn't a resident, or died while in their care
and hadn't been adopted, they can confirm that. But if your relative was a
resident and adopted, all they can tell you is that they can't discuss him/her.]
