I am searching for information on my great grandmother, Ann Hagler.  Her
mother,Katherine, was a slave and owned by Wiley Hagler, who was Ann's
father.  Katherine bore six Hagler children and lived in the Hagler house
 along with the "white" children.
Where do I start to gather documentation?
Ann Hagler was born in Northport, Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1865.  Her mother
was Katherine who had five other children by Wiley Hagler.  Ann married Jim
Taylor, according to my mother, when she was fifteen years old which should
have been around 1880.  She married Jim Taylor.  They lived in the same
county.

This may sound strange to you but I am interested in
attempting to locate some information relating to a
person who was born a slave in Alabama, I believe in
the Tuskegee area and who moved to Washington D.C.
with my great grandparents who had lived in Tuskegee
during the Civil War.  My grandfather was named
Stephen Madison Bartlett and he went to Alabama from
New Hampshire, basically for his health from what I
can gather.  He met and married a woman named Sarah
Austin Tinsley, who was from Virginia.  During the
Civil War he was interned but we don't know very much
except that he was trained as a physician I believe
and supposedly was required to help remove dead and
wounded soldiers from battlefields.  Anyway, a couple
who knew them moved to Washington after manumission
freed them from slavery.  I believe the woman's name
was Dorcas Kile although I am not sure of the spelling
of the last name.  Family legend referred to her as
aunt Dorcas, but I am nor sure of her husband's name.
One relative of mine relates the tale that they were
owned by a neighbor of my great grandfather and both
went along when he moved his family to Washington.
Anyway, I have in my possession a photograph of Dorcas
but don't have anything else about when or where the
picture was taken.  It is on a metal which I believe
is a tintype, and she is wearing a maid's dress.  I
would like to try to find any relatives of hers who
might cherish this tintype as it is rare and would
possibly have sentimental value to even a distant
relative.  I will pass it along to my children etc. if
one of her relatives can't be located but tintypes of
African American, former slaves probably are not that
common and there is some family history in the
association of Dorcas with our family as my
grandfather spoke to my mother of aunt Dorcas, as she
had called my great aunt "Bunch", and the family
adopted that nickname for my aunt because of that.  If
you have any clue to a family of slave holders named
Kile, Coil, or some variation, the descendants of
slaves owned by that family, or any other information
I would appreciate any information you may be able to
provide.

Thanks for your attention,

Charles Bartlett Simkins

Stumbled upon you site.  Nice work.  Am looking for information about Mobile
Al.  Tried to click several of your links but they did not work.

Keep up the good work!  We need to know more about our people, where we come
from, whose we are!  Slavery destroyed our ancestry.  Those who can find
records are blessed.
