The Wade Hampton Census Area in Southwestern Alaska covers 17,124 square miles, an area more than twice the size of Massachusetts. The 7,028 residents, (92.5% Alaska Native), are scattered among small communities. Lacking a hub city, the area relies upon neighboring Bethel as a supply center.

The economies of these mostly Yupik villages are essentially subsistence based. Sources of income include commercial fishing, fish processing, fire fighting, fur trapping, and the manufacture of arts and crafts. The provision of supplies and services is also a large component of the cash economy.
