John D. Ahern Mr. John D. Ahern, age 92, of Biddeford Pool, ME and formerly of Lynn, died on Monday, Jan. 2nd at the N. E. Sinai Hospital, Stoughton, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his wife Berniece L. (Poirier) Ahern and his daughter Eileen P. Monroe. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Lucy B. (McCormack) Ahern, and was the youngest of 13 children. He graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1936. He lived in New Jersey before moving to Maine 30 years ago. John was a First Sergeant in the U. S. Marine Corps during WWII and fought with the 3rd. Marine Division on Bougainville and Guadalcanal. He worked in sales for 30 years. Before retiring in 1980, he was a manufacturer's representative for 22 years for the Hedstrom Co. of Bedford, PA and worked out of their Manhattan offices. John was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Biddeford. He leaves a son John D. "Dan" Ahern, Jr. and his wife Helene of Biddeford, ME, a daughter Ellen C. Popp and her husband John of North Yarmouth, ME, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his grandniece, best friend and constant companion for the last decade Lena Phillips of Stoughton. Maureen (Ahern) LaSella Maureen Ahern LaSella, age 76, resident of Milford and beloved wife of Frank LaSella, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Milford Hospital from complications following a stroke in July 2011. Born on August 18, 1935 in Bradford, England, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Agnes Pope Ahern. She came to the US in 1962 and worked as a nanny and subsequently was employed with Peoples' Bank as a mortgage underwriter. Maureen especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was a loving foster parent for three children. She loved painting and dancing, including Irish Set dancing at the Gaelic-American Club in Fairfield and was an active member of the Milford Irish Club. Maureen was an avid traveler of the world with her husband, Frank. She was a Red Cross volunteer and a dedicated mentor and literacy volunteer for almost twenty years and was awarded Big Sister of the Year in 2007. Maureen was a unique and caring person who would drop anything to help friends, family or strangers, always putting others before herself. In addition to her husband, Frank of 48 years, she is survived by her two daughters, Deila Verdi and her husband John, Sheila LaSella and her husband Brian McNamara all of Milford, her three sons, Frank LaSella of Stratford, Patrick LaSella and his wife Donna of Milford and Kevin LaSella and his wife Karen of Goffstown, NH., and her cherished grandchildren, Amber, Anthony, Ryan, Bethany, Justin, Courtney, Sarah, Kyle, and Colin. Also, her sister Eileen Hayden of Bradford, England and loving nieces and nephews, Janet, Michael, Susan, John, Sean, Noel, Mary, and Paul all of the United Kingdom and numerous nieces and nephews in the US. She was predeceased by her brother Frank Ahern and his wife, Mary. Patricia Ann (Nolan) O'Hearn Patricia Ann (nee Nolan) O'Hearn,79, of Wilder, passed away on January 3, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Hospice Center in Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and member of St. Therese Church, Southgate. Mrs. O'Hearn was preceded in death by brother James Nolan. William C. Ahearn SCHAGHTICOKE—William C. Ahearn, 71, died Saturday, January 7, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy surrounded by his family. Born in Schuylerville, he was the loving and devoted son of the late William D. Ahearn and Helen Miller Ahearn and beloved husband and best friend of 43 years to Jean Palladino Ahearn of Schaghticoke. Bill attended Schuylerville High School, graduated from Bridgton Academy, North Bridgton, Maine and attended Hudson Valley Community College, Troy. Bill joined the Army, training at Fort McClellan, Ala. He was assigned to the U.S. Army 10th medical laboratory in Landstuhl, Germany. He was a senior chemical laboratory tech. E5. After three years of service he received an honorable discharge with a citation for outstanding service and meritorious achievements. Bill worked for the New York State Department of Health at the Wadsworth Lab (Environmental Heath Center). He conducted lake Eutropication field studies for 20 years. He also was head of technical support on investigations of Radon in New York State, PCB's in the Hudson River, worldwide natural methane sources (New York, Panama, West Virginia), New York harbor sedimentation rates, acid rain effects on New York State lakes, collaborated with Environmental Canadian coring of Lake Ontario. Bill then moved to Mass Spectrometry Lab where he worked doing repair, design and adaptations of the spectrometers. He was cited in many scientific papers and reports for his technical excellence, co-authored several papers and developed many sampling and chemical procedures. He retired as a lab equipment designer after 32 years of service. Bill is known for his expertise in statuary restoration/design and has restored both religious/non-religious statues over the years. In addition, he is a handcrafting and woodworking expert. He was known for designing, crafting of furniture and tabernacles for various churches in the Albany Diocese. His restoration work can be found in a wide area of New York State, Vermont and Massachusetts. He was member of the National Sculpture Society and Halfmoon Woodcarving Group. Bill was a devote Catholic, an active member of the former St. Patrick's Church, Troy. He was president of the parish council, lector, eucharistic minister and served on various committees. William was happiest in his studio where he crafted many toys, plaques and fine furniture pieces for family and friends. His other interest included wild bird photography, reading and fine arts. Most of all, he was thrilled caring for and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors in addition to his beloved wife Jean, include two beautiful daughters, Jennifer Ann Coso (Matthew) of Niskayuna, Michelle Anne Wagner (Rob) of Troy; six grandchildren, Alexis, Ayden William, Alyssa, Jacob and Joshua Coso of Niskayuna and Ryan Wagner of Watervliet; brothers-in-law, George (Theresa) Palladino of Oneonta, Philip (Phyllis) Palladino of Auterlitz, Michael (Patricia) Palladino of Pittstown; sister-in-law, Mary (Roger) Ayotte of Waterford; many loving nieces and nephews who frequently called him "B" or "Mr. Bill"; many loving cousins and dear friends, especially W. Tim and Sharon Brock and family. William was predeceased by his beautiful infant daughters, Christine Ann and Anne Marie Ahearn. Anthony D. Ahern January 4, 2012 Anthony D. Ahern, beloved husband, father, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his family January 4, 2012. Born February 13, 1940, he was predeceased by his parents, Pauline and Floyd Ahern; his sister, Suzanne McClary; and his brothers, Timothy King and Kim Ahern. Anthony graduated from St. Lucy's Academy in 1958. He retired as a captain in the Syracuse Fire Dept. after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Valley Legion and the Local Firefighter's Union. Left to cherish his memory are the love of his life and wife of 49 years, Rosemarie Gallagher; his son, Anthony (Amy) Ahern and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Philothea Theresa (Deutsch) "Phil" O'Hern Philothea Theresa was born Jan. 26, 1919 in St. Benedict, MN, to Henry and Ann (Hartman) Deutsch. Phil married Eugene E. O'Hern Feb. 7, 1939 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in St. Benedict. They were blessed with two children, Eugene and Carol Ann. A resident of Prior Lake, Phil, 92, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at her residence at Key Stone Communities in Prior Lake. Elizabeth Anne (McPherson) Ahern Elizabeth Anne (McPherson) Ahern, age 66, of Norwell, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family at home on January 21, 2012. Betty was the beloved wife of J. Oliver Ahern, and the devoted mother of Oliver J. Ahern of Colorado, Anthony M. Carmillo and his wife Michelle of North Carolina, Paul J. Carmillo and his wife, Amie of Chelmsford, and the late Robert B. Ahern. She was the adored grandmother of Matthew, Dominic and Samuel of North Carolina, and Nicholas, Charles and Olivia of Chelmsford. Betty was the sister of Mary Walsh of Weymouth, Terry King of Ohio, Linda Brand and Eileen Gonsalves both of Carver, Joseph McPherson of Hanover and the late Patricia Collins. She was the daughter of the late Mary (O'Brien) and Joseph McPherson. Betty is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Martha E. (Hawkins) Ahearn Martha E. Ahearn, of Wilmington, passed away on January 23, 2012 at the Millcroft Nursing Home after a long illness. She was 91 years old. She was born in Glenn Lock, PA, a daughter of Chester C. and Doris Booker Hawkins, but spent most of her adult life in Delaware. She worked as a waitress at both the Dandy Restaurant and Horn & Hardart Restaurants in Wilmington, and a cashier at Happy Harry's in Branmar Plaza for about 10 years. She mostly enjoyed being a homemaker — cooking and cleaning — she also loved tending her wood stove and fishing on weekends. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Duncan Road, Wilmington. She is predeceased by her brother Chester Hawkins, and her sister Doris Madden. Martha was the wife of William Ahearn who died in 1977. Survivors include her brother, James E. Hawkins of Lake City, FL and her sons William Ahearn of Smyrna, Douglas and his wife Mary of Newark, and Gregory and his wife Lynda of Hockessin; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 4 nieces and 2 nephews. James Redmond O'Hearn James Redmond O'Hearn, 82, of Quincy, Ill., died at 8:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, in Blessing Hospital surrounded by his family. Jim was born April 10, 1929, in Hannibal, Mo., a son of Michael J. and Helen Ryan O'Hearn. He married Mary Patricia Moore on March 31, 1951, in Hannibal. She survives. On March 31, 2011, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Jim was a longtime employee of Motorola Inc. He was the owner and operator of Shamrock Fire Extinguisher Service, retiring in 1999. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, the Silver Dollar Square Dance Club and the founder of the Great River Rompers Square Dance Club in Palmyra, Mo., where he was the caller for more than 25 years. Jim was a lifetime member of the Breakfast Optimist Club. He was an avid reader, crossword puzzle fan, golfer and World War II buff. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by four daughters, Deborah O'Hearn Druffel, Patti O'Hearn (Don) Dixon and Mary A. O'Hearn, all of Quincy, and Judi O'Hearn of Edwardsville, Ill.; six grandchildren, Amanda Druffel (Eric) Becks, Adam (Gina) Druffel, Kyle (Amber) Dixon, Kallie Dixon and Steven (Heather) O'Hearn, of Quincy, and Kolby Dixon (Dustin) Rife of Palmyra; five great-grandchildren and two more on the way. One of Jim's favorite things was to spend time with his family, and he was especially involved with and proud of his six grandkids who will carry him to his final resting place in Calvary Cemetery. Jim is also survived by one sister, Sister Eleanor O'Hearn CSJ of Denver, Colo.; and three brothers, Michael O'Hearn (Lorraine) of Florissant, Mo., Gene O'Hearn (Gerry) of Mount Laurel, N.J., and Ken O'Hearn (Nancy) of St. Peters, Mo. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary O'Hearn Mudd and Helen Anne O'Hearn Walterscheid; and two brothers, Richard E. and David L. O'Hearn. Harold "Red" J. Ahern Harold "Red" J. Ahern, 81, lifelong resident of Summit, N.J., died on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, while vacationing on Singer Island, Fla. Visitation will be held in Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial, 7 Summit Ave., Summit, on Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. The funeral will take place on Thursday, Feb. 9. Family and friends are invited to go directly to St. Teresa of Avila Church to celebrate the Funeral Mass at 10:45 a.m. Mr. Ahern graduated from St. Teresa's Parochial School in 1943 and then graduated from Summit High School in 1947, where he was a sports star in football, basketball and baseball, and was named "Outstanding Athlete" his senior year. He earned a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education at Seton Hall University in 1951 before being drafted into the U.S. Army. In 1953, Mr. Ahern was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, Company E, at Camp Breckinbridge, Ky. He earned a master's in education from Saint John's University in 1956, between semesters working at the Summit YMCA as a swim instructor and Camp Cannundus counselor. The Summit Board of Education hired Mr. Ahern in 1956 as a driver education and physical education instructor. He added "coach" to his title by taking the reins of the junior varsity football and basketball teams as well as assistant coach for the varsity football and basketball teams. Mr. Ahern was also a longtime employee of the Summit Board of Recreation, umpiring baseball and running the summer playground program at Memorial Field and refereeing grade school basketball at Washington School in the winter. He retired from Summit High School in 1988, but continued on the sports scene as an umpire and referee. Mr. Ahern also volunteered helping several children at The School for the Handicapped in Millburn, N.J. His genealogy work for family and friends led to his volunteering at the Summit Historical Society for 13 years. Mr. Ahern is survived by his wife of 54 years, Therese (nee Donohue) of Summit; three daughters, Cathy Ahern-Treco and her husband, Doug, of Arlington, Mass., Eileen Ahern and her husband, Tripp Edwards, of Tunbridge, Vt., and Mary Rose Mehorter and her husband, John, of Scotch Plains, N.J., and two sons, Harold M. Ahern and his wife, Jacquie, of Marlborough, Mass., and Patrick J. Ahern of Pittsfield, Mass. Dorothy (Dustin) Ahearn NASHUA, N.H. and OAKLAND—Dorothy D. Ahearn, 87, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, N.H. She had a been a resident of Nashua Crossings in Nashua, N.H., for the past three years. She was born in Rumford on June 13, 1924, the daughter of John and Elmira (Cormier) Dustin. Dorothy attended Oakland schools, graduating from Williams High School, class of 1942. She was employed in the Plant Service Department of New England Telephone for 31 years, retiring in 1974. An active member of the Oakland community, Dorothy was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, president of the Oakland Garden Club for several years, a member and treasurer of the Oakland Tuesday Club, a member of the Oakland Area Historical Society, and a Girl Scout leader. She was president of the Jasper Keller Chapter, Telephone Pioneers of America, and president of the Kennebec Life Member Club of Telephone Pioneers. Dorothy married Everett Mulliken Jr. on Dec. 29, 1950; he died Dec. 13, 1963. She married Joseph Ahearn in October 1973; he died March 28, 1992. Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Cunningham, and husband Bruce of East Winthrop, Maine, Carol Ann Poulin and husband Theodore of Merimack, N.H., and Terri Lynn Mulliken of Andover, Mass.; a sister, Patricia A. Hood, and husband Richard of Atlanta, Ga.; aunt Leiah McCleary of Portsmouth, N.H.; grandchildren Sarah Lynn Cunningham, Shane Michael Poulin and Colby James Poulin; and nephews Michael and Richard Dustin; grand-nephews Scott and Jeffrey Dustin; and grand-nieces Andrea Lemieux, and Erin Pierce. A memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Notre Dame Church, Silver Street, Waterville. Burial will be at a later date at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Agnes (Ahearn) Hickey Agnes Hickey passed away peacefully on February 17, 2012, at the age of 90 with her family at her side in Stockton. Born on December 27, 1921, to William and Mary Ahearn in New York City, Agnes grew up in the Saint Agatha Home in Nanuet, NY. During WWII, she did office work at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and married John P. Hickey, who decided on a career in the Air Force after the war. Agnes became a stay-at-home Mom and raised her family on various air bases, including ones in New Mexico, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Fairfield, CA. She resumed her civil service career when her children were older, working in various positions on Travis AFB, including the air terminal information desk. She moved to Stockton in 1997. After she retired in 1987, Agnes rediscovered her love of dancing, driving with friends to dances throughout the Greater Bay Area. She enjoyed sewing fancy outfits and making jewelry for her evenings out. She also loved to travel, making several camping trips alone cross-country to see family in the east. She traveled in Europe, including London, Paris, Germany and Turkey. Realizing what she declared to be a life-long dream, she walked on Red Square during both of her trips to Russia, before and after the Berlin Wall fell. In her later years, she enjoyed many trips to Hawaii with her dancing companion Ben Herrera. Agnes was a good Mom who will be missed by her daughters Teresa Hickey and Kathleen Moffet (Byron) of Stockton, her son, John Hickey (Daisy Mah) of Sacramento, her two grandsons Ronald Moffet (Gloria) of Stockton and Michael Moffet (Stephanie Gascon) of Tucson, AZ, her two sisters Margaret Paul of Midland Park, NJ and Evelyn Mull of Malabar, FL and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1978, her sister Adele, and her brothers William, Walter, Danny, James and Eddie. As Agnes requested, no service will be held. Mary Patricia (Croci) Ahearn AHEARN Mary Patricia (Croci), on Thursday, February 16, 2012, Mary passed away in Homestead, Florida at the age of 82. Beloved wife of Joseph Michael Ahearn, Sr. for 57 years, loving mother of Joseph Michael Ahearn, Jr., Joan Jimenez and Elizabeth Ahearn, adoring Nana of Lauren Ahearn, Joseph (JT) Michael Ahearn, III, Olivia Ahearn, Michael Jimenez, Christina Jimenez and Sophia Jimenez, and dear sister of Anna Bruneau. Mary was also predeceased in death by her sister Ida Croci. A longtime resident of Woodcliff Lake, Mary was born on September 16, 1929 in Washington, DC to the late Amelia and Germano Croci who had emigrated from Parma, Italy. In Washington, DC, she attended St. Mary's Parochial School, and after relocating to Riverdale, NY, she attended St. Simon Stock High School. She returned to Washington, DC, graduated from The Washington School for Secretaries, and worked for several agencies. She met Joe at the USMC Officers Club in Quantico, VA, and married after a year and a half courtship. They lived at the Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton, California until Joe completed his military service. They settled in Bronxville, NY, relocated to Yonkers, and in 1966, Mary and her family moved to Woodcliff Lake where she lived until recently. Mary devoted most of her life to her family, prayer, and serving the poorest of the poor. In the 1980s she was professed as a member of the Lay Order of Carmelites, and also became a Mother Teresa Lay Missionary of Charity. After her initial vows, serving six years in the Newark soup kitchen, and driving the sisters into areas such as Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant, she became eligible for one of the highlights of her life: she took her permanent vows as a Lay Missionary of Charity in Rome, Italy where Mother Teresa laid hands upon her. Mary spent the remainder of her life dedicated to family, faith, and service. Arthur G. Ahern Arthur G. Ahern, 83, died Feb. 14, 2012 at Treasure Coast Hospice, Fort Pierce, Fla. He was born in Boston, raised in Charlestown, Mass., and lived in Port St. Lucie, Fla., after many years residing with his family in Andover, Mass. He was a graduate of Boston University with a Bachelor's Degree in education and a Master's Degree in education from Boston State. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Marine Corps. After his military service he went to college on the G.I. Bill then began a long career as a teacher, principal and administrator with the Boston Public Schools. He finished his career in the mid 1980s as a director of the Title I program. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Marilyn Ahern of Port St. Lucie; daughters, Karen Stamm of Pauma Valley, Calif., Colleen Kefferstan of Andover, Mass. and Denise LaMalfa of Fresno, Calif.; son, Gerald Ahern of Williamston, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a brother, Donald Ahern, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and a sister, Lorraine McMahon, of New Hampshire. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Ahern. F. Ruth (O'Hearn) Gray TILTON—F. Ruth Gray, 88, of 107 Dunlop Drive, died at the Mountain Ridge Center- Genesis on Sunday, March 11, 2012. Mrs. Gray was born on April 20, 1923 in Medford, Mass., the daughter of John J. and Mary Abby (Nourse) O'Hearn. She resided in Sanbornton for several years before moving to Tilton in 2009. Mrs. Gray had been employed at the Nighswander Law Office for nineteen years before retiring in 1996. She enjoyed oil painting, cake decorating, cooking and knitting. Mrs. Gray was a member of the Sanbornton Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a Sanbornton Library Trustee and a member of the Cooperative Extension Service in Sanbornton. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Patricia Gray, of Tilton; a daughter, Kathleen Gray, of Tilton; four grandchildren, Sara Gray of Tilton, Christopher Romano of Tilton, Holly Arnold of Campton and Tomas I. Arnold IV of Belmont and three nieces. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gray was predeceased by her husband, Robert H. Gray, in 1974, by two daughters, Priscilla Gray Bloom in 2006 and Mary Ellen Gray in 2000 and by her siblings, John "Bud" O'Hearn, Jr., Joseph O'Hearn, Frank Ryan and Maude Ryan Coghlan. (Upham) Ahern, 81, beloved wife of Maurice "Bill" Ahern , of Peabody, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center Hospital in Burlington following a long illness. Born in Saugus, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Blanche (Ayotte) Upham. She grew up in Lynn, and graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1949. She lived in Peabody for the last 55 years. Nancy enjoyed her role of nurturing a large family and cherished all the moments together. She especially loved being with her grandchildren. She enjoyed square-dancing with The Lancers of Salem and also bowling. She is survived by her husband, Maurice "Bill" Ahern of Peabody, with whom she shared 60 years of marriage; her seven children, Susan Marie Marshall of FL, Sandra Maitland of CA, Sharon Languzzi of FL, Nancy Ricci of Peabody, Richard Ahern of Merrimac, MA, Robert Ahern of East Kingston, NH, and Amy Sampson of Marlborough, MA; 12 granddaughters and 2 grandsons, two great -granddaughters; a brother, Joseph Upham of FL, and many nieces and nephews. Martin Francis O'Hearn, Jr. Martin F. O'Hearn, Jr., 84, of Fond du Lac, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2012, at the St. Francis Home. He was born on June 30, 1927, in the Town of Fond du Lac, the son of Martin F. and Mary K. (nee Murray) O'Hearn, Sr. Martin attended St. Patrick's School from 5th through 8th grades. He joined the U.S. Navy before finishing high school and served on the USS Cape Esperance during World War II, and also in the Naval Reserve for an additional six years. After returning to Fond du Lac, he graduated from Goodrich High School in 1947, and worked with his father on the O'Hearn homestead, which his grandfather purchased in 1908. On May 22, 1954, Martin married Rosemary Krug at St. Mary's Church, officiated by Rev. Raymond Fox. Martin and Rosemary would have celebrated 58 years of marriage in May. Martin farmed all his life in the Town of Fond du Lac, and he also worked at Mercury Marine for 23 years. He retired in 1990. He was a member of Holy Family Parish and the Holy Name Society at St. Patrick's Church. He enjoyed playing sheepshead, dancing, traveling, gambling trips, his old tractor, Irish jokes, going out to eat and was a great Green Bay Packers fan. Martin was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include his beloved wife Rosemary; his son Patrick Michael (Lynn) O'Hearn of Campbellsport; his daughter Sheila Mary (Scott) Radke of Appleton; his grandchildren: Jacy (Nate) Georgenson, Leah (Matt) Ribbeck, Joel (Issie) Radke and Brooke Radke; his great-grandchildren: Amber and Laney Georgenson, Nolan and soon-to-be-born, Calum Ribbeck, and Martin and Grace Radke; his sister Mary Elizabeth Rentmeester of Plymouth; his sister-in-law Dolores Chmielewski of Fond du Lac; and his brother-in-law Daniel J. (Anna) Krug of Fond du Lac; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his infant brother, Francis Edward O'Hearn. Judy J. (Sweebe) Ahearn Judy J. Ahearn, 68, of Midland, died Friday afternoon, April 6, 2012, at her home after an illness. She was born on April 28, 1943, in Midland County, daughter of the late Elmer and Ernesteen (Ohlrogge) Sweebe. Judy attended Midland schools, graduating from Midland High School in 1961. The former Judy J. Sweebe married Ted Sheets on Jan. 20, 1962, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Sanford, he died in 1984. She then married Robert "Bob" Ahearn on April 26, 1986, in Sanford. Judy grew up in Sanford, was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and served on the parish council. She also served as Lincoln Township Treasurer for 20 years. Judy loved her grandkids and enjoyed crafting, sewing, shopping on QVC, flowers, dancing, baking, The Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers and fishing. She was the world's most generous and caring person. Judy is survived by her husband, Bob; her children, Nancy (Ernie) LeClair of Saginaw, Jennifer Sheets of Bay City, Josh (Kaye) Sheets of Breckenridge, Deb (Don) Young of Midland and Ken (Jill) of Midland. She is also survived by brothers and sisters, Barbara Rider of Lake City, Pat (Ron) Pettipas of Midland, Joe (Gail) Sweebe of Kentucky, Mike (Sue) Sweebe of Sanford and Ted (Irma) Sweebe of Indiana; by six grandchildren, Amanada, Ashley, Dan, Andrew, Reahna and Allison. Judy is also survived by numerous in-laws of the Ahearn and Sweebe families. In addition to her parents and first husband, Ted, Judy was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Snyder and Nan Botsford; and by one brother, H. Jack Sweebe. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2012, from St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Fr. Daniel J. Fox OFM Cap officiating. Richard W. Ahearn Richard W. Ahearn, 51, of Hanover, formerly of Squantum, died at home Friday, April 20, 2012. The son of Evelyn (Green) Ahearn of Squantum and the late John S. Ahearn, he was born in Milton, Aug. 10, 1960. Richard was employed as a Union Electrician with Local 103. He loved the outdoors, landscaping his yard, fishing, camping, coin collecting, was an avid car enthusiast, restoring several cars and was a proud member of IBEW Local 103. George F. Ahearn, Sr. September 21, 1924 — May 4, 2012 PAXTON — George F. Ahearn, Sr., 87, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, May 4, 2012, at UMass Memorial Healthcare, Memorial Campus. Born September 21, 1924, George was the son of John F. and Mary (Zablo) Ahearn and lived all his life in Paxton. George was the grandson of Irish immigrants and was the third generation to farm in Paxton. He and his wife Janice owned and operated, with his sons, Juniper-Mist Dairy Farm at 140 Marshall Street. George was named a Holstein Breeder Emeritus and was one of the first breeders in Massachusetts and New England to introduce and practice "Embryo Transplantation". His breeding stock sold nationally and internationally. His wife of 56 years, Janice (Stone) Ahearn, died in 2004. He is survived by three sons, Mark G. Ahearn and his wife Cynthia of Paxton, Timothy J. Ahearn and his wife Donna of Spencer and Michael J. Ahearn and his wife Margaret of Paxton; three daughters, Paula A. Schur and her husband Peter of Paxton, Holly J. Toomey of Paxton and Mary J. Woodis and her husband Steven of Spencer; a brother, William H. Ahearn of West Boylston; 22 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. A son, George "Judd" F. Ahearn, Jr., two brothers, James and John Ahearn, three sisters, Margaret Doyle, Lillian Reynolds, and Dorothy Benson all predeceased him. Kathryn L. "Kate" Ahearn WELLS—Kathryn L. 'Kate' Ahearn, 65, of Wells, died on Friday, May 11, 2012, at her residence. She was born in Ridley Park, Pa., on May 13, 1946, the daughter of John Vincent Ahearn Sr., and Mildred Laurette (Tierney) Ahearn. The family lived in New York before moving to Illinois. Kate moved to Maine in the 1990s, where she owned and operated the Ogunquit Innkeepers Motel, which she sold upon her retirement in 2004. She was a member of the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce, and enjoyed cooking, baking, and interior design. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John V. Ahearn Jr., and her sister, Judith Crooker. Kate is survived by two nieces, Tracey Young of Ohio, and Nora Killoran of New York, and a nephew, Michael Crooker of Ohio. There are no calling hours. Albert John "Jack" Ahern, Jr. Albert John Ahern Jr., known as Jack, beloved husband of Nancy Veale Ahern, died peacefully at his Westville home on Thursday, May 24, 2012, after a long illness. He had been a reporter and editor at the New Haven Register for many years before his retirement in 1990. Jack was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Derby, son of the late Albert J. Ahern Sr. and Susan O'Callahan Ahern. He grew up in Seymour, graduating in 1943 from Seymour High School, where he had been a star pitcher on the baseball team. He enlisted in the Navy, serving aboard ship in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during World War II and earning four military service medals. He received a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in 1951. He joined the New Haven Register editorial staff as the Naugatuck Valley reporter and sometime photographer in 1953, and later covered City Hall and the State Capitol, where he was a member of the Laurel Club. In 1965 he was appointed special assistant to Gov. John Dempsey, serving in that capacity until the governor left office. He then returned to the Register as a copy editor, weekend city editor and later wire editor, with an uncanny sense of which breaking news stories were most important. He also taught a journalism course at Quinnipiac University. Jack was known for his quick wit and had a passion for reading and solving crossword puzzles. He also was an avid fisherman, having fished nearly every stream in Connecticut, a skillful cook and woodworker, and a loyal Boston Red Sox fan. He was the perfect supportive political spouse during his wife's dozen years on the New Haven Board of Aldermen. Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Patricia Morgan (Robert) of Cheshire; a stepdaughter, Laurie Wiggins (Douglas) of Catonsville MD; a stepson, Edward Washburn of St. Croix; and three step-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Margaret Shean of Centerville MA, a niece and three nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Center Church on-the-Green, the Revs. Florence and Woodrow Eddins officiating, with a reception to follow. Burial will be in Grove Street Cemetery. Albert John "Jack" Ahern, Jr. RANDALL BEACH: Remembering Valley boy who made good on the mound, at sea, in the newsroom When many friends and family members came to Center Church on-the-Green Thursday to celebrate the rich and varied life of Jack Ahern Jr., they were reminded he was a "man's man" from the Naugatuck Valley but a soft-hearted sentimentalist who loved dogs and birds and kept his big right toenail painted red. He was also one of the funniest guys you could have the pleasure to know. And he was a great whistler. His real name was Albert John Ahern, Jr. but nobody ever called him Albert. At the start of the memorial service, when his full name was used, it just didn't sound right. When I worked with him at the New Haven Register in the late 1970s and in the '80s, he was always "Jack." Oh man, could he light up a newsroom. "Jack's sense of humor used to keep us in stitches on the desk, especially weekend nights, and his made-up captions for photos were wickedly funny," his wife, Nancy Ahern, told me in an email message last week. The Rev. Woody Eddins, pastor of Simsbury United Methodist Church, noted in his tribute that Jack and Nancy "met at the New Haven Register, fell in love and made a commitment that lasted for 36 years. Every year, they shared their vows again." During that service, I learned a lot about Jack. For instance, although I enjoyed watching him in gleeful goofy action on the pitching mound Friday afternoons after work during our Register softball games, I never realized he had been a star pitcher for Seymour High School and Syracuse University. It was during one of our Friday games that Jack leaped off the mound at a ground ball, lunged toward a runner speeding in from third base and wound up lying near home plate, helpless with laughter and looking like a beached whale. This earned him the nickname "Orca," which I called him for the rest of his life. But then I found out during Thursday's service that Jack also pitched semi-pro ball in a Naugatuck Valley league during the 1940s. I'm impressed, Orca! During the tributes Thursday, I also learned Jack contracted tuberculosis as a child and spent lots of time in and out of hospitals. Talk about making a full recovery: in addition to becoming a fine athlete, he served for four years in the Navy during World War II. Jack Cavanaugh, his Syracuse roommate and eventual Register co-worker, said Jack had 4-5 battle scars, but never talked about how he got them. When he came back to Connecticut after the war and college, Jack got a job with the Bethany Press. His journalistic skills quickly became evident, leading to a job with the Register's Ansonia bureau. One of his assignments was covering the Naugatuck flood. Jack was promoted to cover New Haven City Hall, where he ferreted out whatever Mayor Richard C. Lee was up to. Then he covered the state capital, which led to a job as special assistant to Gov. John Dempsey. But the newsroom was where he belonged, so he returned to the Register after Dempsey left office. He held down the titles of copy editor, weekend city editor and, in the years I worked with him, wire editor. Nancy recalled that Jack was astonishingly good with crossword puzzles. "One time, when the Sunday crossword solution did not come in, Jack quickly finished a puzzle and we ran that, hand-lettered and all." Robert Morgan, Jack's son-in-law, noted during his memorial service talk that when Jack and Nancy installed a backyard pool at their Westville home, Jack invited everybody to come over and use it "because he really cared about people." Morgan was the one who used the "man's man" line to describe Jack. "He loved to fish and he was very happy his son-in-law was a fisherman, too. He always knew the right spots." But Morgan also told us about Jack's softer side. When a family the Aherns knew in New Hampshire could no longer keep their old golden retriever, Bourbon, Jack and Nancy adopted him; Jack and Bourbon became "best friends." "Jack once told me, 'This is the best dog in the whole world,'" Morgan said. Then Morgan added, "I had the best father-in-law in the whole world. He acted like a father to me." Now what about that red toenail? I noticed it about 15 years ago when I lounged around the pool with Jack and Nancy and my kids, who at an early age benefited from the generous sharing of that cool water. I don't know if I ever asked Jack about his colored toenail, but Nancy filled me in last week. "One day when I was painting my toenails, Jack stuck out his foot and said, 'Paint mine!' And so, for years, he had a red toenail on his big right foot. I kept it fresh." — New Haven Register 2 June 2012

Alda Wilma (Clifford) Ahern Alda Wilma Ahern In San Francisco, Sunday 27 May, peacefully after a long decline, Alda Wilma Ahern, 97, long-time resident of San Francisco, the only child of William Clifford and Gertrude McBurney, both of Sacramento. Alda grew up in one of Sacramento's then new neighborhoods, built in what had been farmland where there were old-fashioned farmhouses and barns amid the new bungalows and fruit trees in the backyards from the orchards that had been there before the houses. Her grandmother, Getrude Carroll-McBurney lived with the family. She had come to California in 1865 with her parents and was inordinately fond of movies and took a very young Alda along to silent films reading her the titles and captions much to the consternation of other patrons. "Big Gertie" was often in Alda's thoughts in the last years of her life. Alda became an avid reader in her childhood and grew up with the Oz books; she was particularly fond of Ozma of Oz who could change her head in keeping with her mood. She attended elementary schools in Sacramento and went on to Sacramento High School graduating in 1932 in the same class as another Sacramento-to-San Francisco transplant, Herb Caen. She took an Associate of Arts degree from Sacramento Junior College in 1934. In 1930, she went on a last minute date with Edward P. Ahern, a year ahead of her in school, and though he and his family moved to San Francisco, they began a long-distance courtship while he was in college. He would travel by train up to Sacramento, or just as often she would come down to San Francisco and stay with his family on Commonwealth Avenue. On her visits, they would drive about and explore the grassy top of Mount Olympus with its new road and Sutro's old monument, the sandy beaches at Hunter's Point with their dwindling Chinese shrimp camps and the vegetable fields and dairies out beyond Sigmund Stern Grove. They married at St. Edward the Confessor Church on California Street and after a few years settled in the Sunset in Doelger City buying the house that they would occupy for the rest of their lives. The move was to a wilderness as it was then in the last block before a great expanse of dunes that stretched to the beach. Alda remembered fondly the friendships of those days cemented by the shared experiences of motherhood and neighborhood canasta parties with Jane Gribble, Frances Terrell, Beryl Chapman, Ollie McCann, Minnie Lou Deasy and Rosalie Murphy, all now sadly gone. When her children were older, she returned to work and was for many years a school secretary for the San Francisco Unified School District. After her retirement, she travelled widely in Europe and to Japan. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband of 73 years, Edward Philip Ahern. She is survived by her children Kathleen Christiansen, Michael, Kevin, and Dennis Ahern, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sharlene F. (Robertson) Ahern LUDLOW—Ludlow resident Sharlene F. Ahern died at her family's side on June 3, 2012, at Springfield Hospital in Vermont. Sharlene was born September 1, 1945, in Quincy, Massachusetts, to Olive and Richard "Chubby" Robertson. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Raymond, daughter Kelly, mother Olive and six immediate siblings, Susan, Dianne, Cheryle, Larry, Jeff and Ricky. Sharlene is also survived by a very large extended family, each of whom she cherished deeply. She now joins Chubby and her sister, Kim, in all of our hearts. Sharlene was one of eight children born and raised in the South Shore of Boston. After marrying Ray and giving birth to their daughter, Kelly, the family's adventurous spirit moved them to several locations including Massachusetts, California and finally to Sharlene's beloved Vermont. Sharlene's love of travel brought her adventures around the globe, always encouraging others to join her in fulfilling that passion. What Sharlene will be most remembered for is her sense of humor and dedication and devotion to her community, especially children. Sharlene worked in the Ludlow School System for 21 years, touching the lives of the kids, fellow staff and parents. Sharlene also volunteered as a friend of the elderly at Gill Terrace Apartments. Sharlene adored all in her life and positively affected each life she touched. She was incredibly grateful and moved by all of the outreach, love and support she received over the last six months. Sharlene (Robertson) Ahern Sharlene (Robertson) Ahern, age 66, of Ludlow, Vt., formerly of Abington, Mass., died of a brief illness, Sunday, June 3. She is survived by her husband, Ray Ahern; daughter, Kelly Bixby; her mother, Olive Robertson; sisters, Susan DeChristoforo, Dianne Engren and Cheryle Romano; brothers, Larry Robertson, Rick Robertson and Jeff Robertson; and many nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Richard Robertson, and sister and of the late Kim Robertson. A memorial service will be held in Ludlow, Vt., Sunday, June 10, at the home of one of her dear friends. Mark R. Ahern Mark R. Ahern 1956-2012 CHARLOTTE, NC—Mark R. Ahern, 56, of Charlotte died peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at his home. Mark was born in Westfield on February 26, 1956. Raised in Springfield he attended Ursuline Academy and graduated from Cathedral High School. He worked at Monsanto Chemical Company in Indian Orchard and went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Massachusetts. Mark was employed by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company as an insurance underwriter for several years and then went to work for MET Life in Charlotte, NC. Mark is survived by his father Harold "Harry" T. Ahern and his wife Linda "Lynne" (Koldys) Ahern of Wilbraham; his mother, Jean (Gaimari) McComb of Willow Springs, NC; a sister, Judy McComb of Willow Springs, NC; along with several uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. During his years at Cathedral Mark and his friends formed a band, The Sunshine Railroad, which gave them hours of enjoyment playing their music. His love for the outdoors and adventure led him on a summer long cross country trip with his friend, Dave, where they camped and hiked and explored the National Parks. He loved skiing and belonged to several ski clubs. He was an avid reader and sports enthusiast. His love for the Red Sox kept his heart at home here in New England. Richard O'Hearn EDGEWATER, N.J.—Richard O'Hearn, 77, of Edgewater, N.J., passed away Friday, June 15, 2012, at Schuylkill Medical Center East, Pottsville. Born in Ashland, March 22, 1935, he was a son of the late Vincent and Marion (Scanlon) O'Hearn. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School, Ashland. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked for America's Best Eye Care as a optician in New Jersey until his retirement. He was a member of the Corpus Cristi Catholic Church in Beverly, N.J. Professor Maureen Ahern AHERN Professor Maureen Ahern, of Columbus, Ohio died peacefully at home following a short illness on June 20, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 14, 1936 to the late William C. Ahern and Veronica Thompson of Charlestown, New Hampshire. Professor Ahern was a 1958 magna cum laude graduate of the University of New Hampshire. She earned a Bachelor's and Doctorate degrees, both in Literature, from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru in 1960 and 1961, respectively. After many years of work and travel throughout Mexico and Peru, Professor Ahern returned to the United States in 1972 and became a Professor of Spanish at Arizona State University. From 1990 until shortly before her death, she was Professor of Spanish, Latin American Literature and Culture at The Ohio State University. Her marriage to Juan Maurer ended in divorce. Professor Ahern is survived by her children, Ursula Maurer (Scott Manders) of Falls Church, Virginia; Carlos Maurer (Daniela Korbilas) of Tempe, Arizona; Crescencia Maurer (Karl Stromayer) of Newman, California; four grandchildren, Evan Manders, Konrad Stromayer, Elise Stromayer and Ian Stromayer; and a sister, Patricia Ahern, of Charlestown, New Hampshire. Professor Ahern was blessed with, and much appreciated by many friends, students and colleagues. She was a member of St. Timothy Parish in Columbus. Predeceased by her Son, (Rick Shaklee) in 1980. Survived by three daughters, Laura Hughes of Montecito, CA. Sandie Hughes of Alamo, CA. Karen White of Santa Barbara, CA. Also survived by nine grandchildren and several beloved nieces and nephews. Claire loved dancing and enjoyed being an excellent ballroom dancer and along with her husband enjoyed dancing in many grand ballrooms while traveling the world. She and Lee also enjoyed taking long cruises and took many to destinations all over the earth. Claire was an integral part in helping build Shaklee Corporation into the large multi national company that was listed on the Fortune 500. She took great pride in sharing many stories of the hard and enjoyable work and effort that she and Lee invested in making Shaklee Corporation into a huge success. Shaklee was sold in 1989. Claire also served on many boards for non-profit foundations and academic institutions and loved being involved in helping to make life better for others. Arthur F. Ahearn, Jr. Arthur F. Ahearn Jr., age 70 of Meriden, formerly of Danbury died on Friday at Mid-State Medical Center, Meriden. Arthur was born August 4, 1941, the son of the late Arthur F. Sr. and Catherine (Burns) Ahearn. He was a graduate of both St. Peter School and Henry Abbott Technical School, and was active in local athletics. Arthur served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S. S. Springfield, and later was employed as a sheet metal fabricator for several Danbury area companies. He was for many years a parishioner of St. Peter Church, Danbury. Arthur is survived by his sister Catherine Donnelley of Danbury, and his brother Robert J. Ahearn and his wife Anne, of Danbury, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Patricia Kaiser. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday July 17th at St. Peter Church, Danbury at 10:30 am. Jerome M. "Jerry" Ahern Evans Funeral Home announces the death of Mr. Jerry Ahern, age 66, of Jefferson, who passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Mr. Ahern was born in Chicago, Ill., a son of the late John and Arline Ahern. Jerry was an award-winning, internationally-known author of over 80 novels including "The Survivalist" series, numerous non-fiction books, and thousands of magazine articles. In recent years, Jerry served as an editorial consultant. Additionally, Jerry was a strong supporter of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights. Jerry had a strong Christian faith and led a vigorous and healthy lifestyle until a recent and aggressive cancer took his life. His positive, never-give-up attitude, as well as a good sense of humor, were a part of his day-to-day throughout. Jerry was deeply cherished and loved by his family; all those that knew him, loved him. He had a strong devotion to his family. "Fran" (Casey) Ahearn, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 27th, 2012, the day of her 33rd wedding anniversary. She is survived by her "knight in shining armor" William G. Ahearn, who was by her side. Mary was born in Lowell on September 18, 1930, the daughter of the late Peter and Frances (O'Grady) Casey, and was a lifelong Billerica resident before moving to Chelmsford in 1978. She worked for many years at Hanscom Air Force Base as a Federal Employee. Mrs. Ahearn was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Chelmsford, and an avid golfer belonging to the Mt. Pleasant Golf Club and spending winters and golfing in Hilton Head, SC. She loved the Red Sox, but most of all, she was always there for her family and friends. She was a great mom and will be dearly missed. Charles Mortimer "Chuck" Ahern, Jr., Charles Mortimer "Chuck" Ahern, Jr., 91, died on July 19, 2012 in Hopewell, VA due to the effects of dementia. Born in Natick MA on June 11, 1921, he was the son of the late Charles Mortimer and Helena Coleman Ahern. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy (Bennett) Ahern. Chuck grew up and went to school in Natick, Massachusetts graduating from Natick High School in 1939. During World War II, he served as an armorer in the US Army Air Forces. After returning to Natick, he worked at and retired from what is now called the US Army Natick Soldier Systems Center. For many years Chuck served as a member of the Natick Town Meeting. As a reader of European and military histories, he frequently walked to the Morse Institute Library, for many years accompanied by his faithful black lab/collie mix, Pepper. Chuck volunteered, with Dorothy, at Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick. His friends and family will remember him as an easy going, quiet gentleman with a clear and kind wit. In addition to Dorothy, he is survived by two daughters: Ellen Buchanan and husband John of Prince George, VA and LTC (retired) Margaret Mills of Sierra Vista, AZ; and his son, Charles B. Ahern and his wife, Suzon, of Des Moines, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Douglas Buchanan, Julia Mills, Kelly Mills, and Patrick Ahern. Helen (Cone) Ahearn 1933-2012 Helen C. Ahearn, 79, a longtime resident of Convent Avenue in Bennington died Wednesday August 1, 2012 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Albany, N.Y., on January 3, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Julia (Brazell) Cone. Helen received her education in Bennington and was a 1950 graduate of Bennington High School and a 1952 graduate of St. Joseph's Business College. She married John E. Ahearn on May 8, 1954 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Mr. Ahearn died March 3, 2003. Helen was employed as a medical and legal secretary. For twelve years she worked for the Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services from which she retired. Helen loved spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed reading, knitting and attending her grandchildren's various activities. She is survived by five children, Patricia Masterson and her husband Joseph of Narragansett, Rhode Island, Julianne Roy and her husband James of Bennington, Vt., Kevin Ahearn and his wife Ramona of Queensbury, N.Y., John Ahearn and his wife Karen of Bennington, Vt., and Kathleen LaCroix and her husband Andre of Loxahatchee, Florida; Five grandchildren, Christopher and Tyler Roy and Kate, Bridget and Colleen Ahearn. A sister Frances Anglin and her husband James of South Yarmouth, Mass., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition she leaves her loving caregiver Autumn Dorman and a great friend and co-worker Beth Sausville FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday August 4, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales at 11 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Julia (Dever) Ahearn Julia D. Ahearn, 90, passed away August 4, 2012 at her home in Scottsdale, Arizona after a long illness. Julia is survived by her four children, John (wife Natalie), Barbara, Marion (husband Russell), and Mark (wife Vicki), her sister Barbara, 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Julia was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John F. (Jack) Ahearn. Julia was born and raised in New York City, one of six children of Michael Dever and Bridget Dever (nee Gallagher), who emigrated from Ireland in 1909 and 1911, respectively. Upon graduation in 1939 from Mother Cabrini High School in Manhattan, Julia continued her education in business school and worked in the music publication business. She met Jack in New York City and always said he was attracted to her because she had the loudest scream of any customer on the Coney Island Parachute Jump where he worked. They married in 1943, and together traveled extensively throughout Jack's 22-year career as an Air Force officer, followed by his second career with Grumman Corporation. They finally settled in Ronkonkoma, NY, their place of longest residence. Julia most enjoyed her family, reading, bridge, travel, gardening, a love of flowers and most recently her times with her swimming group. Everyone enjoyed her great sense of humor and immense generosity. Funeral services will be held at Hansen Desert Hills Mortuary, 6500 E. Richard Benz Ahern Ahern, Richard Benz 79, former longtime Minnesota resident, died Monday, July 30, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Born on September 14, 1932, he was the son of the late John Joseph Ahern and Laura Benz Ahern. Richard enjoyed his early years with a large, loving family, including brothers, John and Walter, and sisters, Rosie, Lorle, and Lydia. Educated in Minneapolis at the Breck School, Richard later attended Annapolis and the University of Minnesota. Following college, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Europe after the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a corporal. He moved to Scottsdale in 1979 and recently retired from Target. An avid hockey enthusiast, Richard was a dedicated coach and continued his love of the sport, long after his coaching days. He was also a founding member of the Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club. He was an accomplished high school athlete and was recently inducted into Breck's inaugural Hall of Fame. Dwight W. O'Hearn BUTLER: Dwight W. O'Hearn, 89, of Butler passed away Wednesday evening August 8, 2012 in his home surrounded by his loving family. The second son of Ira and Etha (Freehafer) O'Hearn, Dwight was born on the family farm east of Butler on January 27, 1923. His grandparents were Michael and Ida (Hazlett) O'Hearn and John and Elizabeth (Remy) Freehafer of the Butler area. Dwight's great grandparents James and Johanna (Brodrick) O'Hearn came from Limerick, Ireland in 1850. Dwight's elementary education was in a rural one-room school house. He graduated from Butler High School in 1940 as class valedictorian and also attained four years of perfect attendance. He attended churches in Butler, Bellville, Mt. Vernon, and Loudonville. For many years he attended the Clear Fork Presbyterian Church (Bunker Hill) where he served as Sunday school treasurer, superintendent, church trustee, and ruling elder. Over the past two years he and his wife Naomi returned to Naomi's childhood church, the First Church of God, 1756 Park Avenue West, Ontario, to worship and fellowship with family and friends. Living on the farm, which had been in the family since 1833, this was Dwight's home since birth. He operated it as a general grain and livestock farm for many years before taking a position in the Treasurer's office for Clear Fork Valley Schools in 1962. Dwight worked for 26 years until retiring in 1988. Positions of service to the community included member of the Butler Board of Education, Director of the Butler Elevator CoOp, member of the Worthington Township Volunteer Fire Department, Secretary of Bunker Hill Cemetery Association for approximately 25 years, and member of the Richland County Farm Bureau for many years. Surviving are his wife Naomi (McKinney) O'Hearn of Butler whom he married on April 13, 1974; daughter Kathleen (Roger) Company of Plymouth; step-son Mark Adkins of Perrysville; step daughter Deborah (Tim) Sparks of Jacksonville, Florida; two step grandchildren Dustin (Tricia) Sparks of Jacksonville, Florida, Nicole (Dr. David) Greenfield of Savannah, Georgia; one step great grandson Kellan Greenfield of Savannah, Georgia. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Archie in 1942, and first wife Marjorie (Snyder) O'Hearn in 1971. Frances Barbara (Keller) Ahearn GREENFIELD—Barbara K. (Keller) Ahearn, 92, of Greenfield, passed away at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility on Aug. 16, 2012, after a period of declining health. She was born July 28, 1920 in Northampton to Francis W. and Anna M. (Smith) Keller. Barbara graduated from Northampton High School and Northampton Commercial College. She was married to William G. Ahearn in April 1944. Bill died in 2006, just nine days shy of their 62nd wedding anniversary. Survivors include two sons, David G. Ahearn and his wife Sally of Greenfield and W. Barry Ahearn and his wife Pamela of New Orleans, LA, and a daughter, Ann M. Mayo and her husband Douglas of Greenfield. She also leaves two granddaughters, Heather K. Ahearn of Salem and Sarah Ahearn Bellemare and her husband Jesse of Northampton; a grandson, Thomas G. Ahearn of New Orleans, and a great-granddaughter, Ada Bellemare of Northampton. She is also survived by her brother, Francis W. Keller Jr., and his wife Carol of Northampton. Barbara was an accomplished artist, painting many Western Mass. scenes over the years, and was a member of the Deerfield Valley Art Association. She and Bill also loved to square dance and travel in their beloved VW camper. She was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church. She worked for several local doctors as a medical secretary and later retired after a number of years as a clerk for the Mass. Registry of Motor Vehicles. A memorial service will be held on Thursday Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St. Friends are encouraged to come at 10:30 to meet with the family prior to the service. Michael J. Ahearn July 12, 1929 — August 21, 2012 NORWICH—Michael J. Ahearn, 83, died on Tuesday at Norwichtown Care and Rehab Center. He was born in Norwich on July 12, 1929 to the late Michael J. and Gertrude (Snook) Ahearn—the youngest of six children. Michael left high school to join the army at the end of WW II and was stationed in Alaska. He returned to graduate from NFA. He moved to NYC to become an actor and met his wife of 23 years, Judy Bonnallie. As a family man he launched his career in the newspaper business, landing a job at the Hartford Courant, then moving back to Norwich to work as a reporter at the Norwich Bulletin and finally, working as an editor at the New London Day, retiring in 1994. Mike was kind and charming and had a great, corny sense of humor. He loved walking in the woods, dogs and playing with his grandchildren. Stanley DeCoster of Salem, a friend and former colleague of Michael at The Day, said: He was an avid golfer for much of his life and here, as in other areas, he had some original thoughts. He always said golf courses should be 14 holes instead of 18 because he used to become tired and his game suffered over the last four holes.There should be a front seven and a back seven, he would say. Always upbeat, Mike would console a red-faced, frustrated golfer who hit a dribbler off the tee. "At least you're out there," he said, without a tinge of sarcasm. Michael Bagwell of Niantic, also a former Day employee and friend of Michael, noted that Michael's career spanned a revolution in the newspaper business when it went from reporters using manual typewriters to the computers of today. "I never knew Michael to say an unkind word about anyone," Bagwell said. "He was greatly loved and respected." Michael is survived by his Daughter, Beth Ahearn and her husband, Chris O'Neil of Freeport, Maine; his son, Michael J. Ahearn III and his wife Tina; his ex-wife, Judy Ahearn; and grandchildren Kelsey, Madison and Michael J. Ahearn, and Connor and Katelyn O'Neil. Michael is predeceased by his son, William and his girlfriend, Connie Moor. Jean G. Ahearn Jean G. Ahearn, 82, of Clinton, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, surrounded by the love of her family at Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital. She was born on January 7, 1930, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was married to the love of her life, John "Jake" R. Ahearn on February 2, 1950. Throughout their 58 year union, the couple shared a deep and abiding devotion to each other. Jake died March 1, 2008. She retired from United Technologies Corp. in Windsor Locks, CT, in 1988 and moved to Clinton, NY, a year later. Jean was a member of St. Mary's Church in Clinton and volunteered for many years at the Kirkland Town Library and for the Oneida County Board of Elections at voter registration and elections. She was an avid Bingo player. Jean loved spending time with her family most of all and watching her grandsons play hockey, soccer and track for Clinton. She is survived by her five daughters, a son and their spouses, Michael and Jean Ahearn of Brimfield, MA, Kathleen and Richard O'Dea of West Roxbury, MA, Colleen and Richard Scaffa of Medford, NJ, Eileen and Mike Gleason of Clinton, NY, Maureen and Marty Reidy of Holliston, MA, and Erin and John Page of Charlton, MA; eleven grandchildren, Kimberley Frick, Michael and Megan O'Dea, Alex Scaffa, Nikki Little, Sean, Colin and Ryan Gleason, Tim and Cara Page and Jack Reidy; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Sylvia Works of Stafford Springs, CT; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Emmett and Gloria Ahearn of Palmer, MA; and a special place in her heart for Kevin Conway, Ben Hobaica and Matt Pryor who were like grandsons to her. John J. Ahearn, Jr. John J. Ahearn Jr. passed away on August 29, 2012. Jack was born on April 30, 1929 to the late John J. and Margery Dingman Ahearn. He was a native of Green Island and graduated from Catholic Central High School, class of 1946. He held an electrical engineering degree from RPI and was an Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, the former Dawn Lecuyer; seven children and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters, Margaret J. Oathout, Patricia Ahearn Clark and Frances M. Gras all of Edinburg, N.Y. and Florida. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert W. Ahearn. Mary Frances (Kelley) Ahern March 5, 1923—September 3, 2012 COLUMBUS, GEORGIA—Mary Frances Kelley Ahern, 89, passed away on September 3, 2012 at the Doctor's Hospital in Columbus, Georgia. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at 10:00 AM in Parkhill Cemetery with a memorial service to follow at Trinity Episcopal Church at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Mrs. Ahern was born March 5, 1923 to the late Harold Strong Kelley and Emmett Curtis Lynch in Honolulu, Hawaii. She attended Shorter College and then graduated from the University of Georgia with a Masters of Business Administration. Soon after graduating, she married Col. William F. Ahern at age 27. They lived in several different places during their marriage, including Heidelberg, Germany, Falls Church, Virginia, Ft. Benning, Georgia, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and finally settling in Columbus. Mrs. Ahern began her working years as the Executive Administrative Assistant for the Editor of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Maynard Ashworth. She was also a typing and shorthand instructor for Manpower and Development Training. Mrs. Ahern then went on to become the Field Director for the Concharty Council of Girl Scouts. She was also a freshman Algebra teacher at Columbus High School. Mrs. Ahern decided to start a career in Real Estate, so she began working for Howard Jefferson Real Estate, then continuing on to Dan Parker Realtors and finally Flournoy and Calhoun Realtors where she retired in 2003 after 32 years. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Columbus Junior League where she was an active and sustaining member, the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Association of Realtors. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ahern was preceded in death by her step-father, Judge Joseph Arthur Lynch, her grandmother, Mary Lavender Lowe Curtis, her grandfather, Walter Wells Curtis and a son, William Francis Ahern, II. Survivors include her three children, Maura E. Ahern of Carlsbad, CA, Sean T. Ahern (Karen) of Morehead City, NC and Terry E. Ahern of Columbus, GA. Joyce Marie Ahearn Joyce Marie Ahearn, 71, passed away peacefully August 29, 2012 at her San Francisco home. She was the first born of Byrde Creedon and Paul Ahearn on May 22, 1941 in S.F. Joyce was a graduate of St. Paul's Grammar School and St. Paul's High School. She attended Holy Names University and graduated with Bachelor of Arts Degree. Joyce was a teacher in S.F. for 30 years and retired in 2005 from Independence High. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Church, Catholic Professional Woman's Club, Irish Cultural Center, Olympic Club, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, etc. Joyce was a gentle, kind, and thoughtful person, who telephoned, sent cards, or put surprise gifts on the doorstep of relatives, friends, and doctors to celebrate special dates. She also enjoyed the "warmth of family" at Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. When her parents died, Joyce developed a replacement family of friends in the Bay Area. Since she was outgoing and chatty, she often contacted them for unexpected shopping, dinner, movies, etc. However, she is best known for annual Christmas dinners at the Lakeside Clubhouse of Olympic Club, where she lavished dinner, drinks, music, dancing, and entertainment upon guests. She was predeceased by a mother, Byrde Creedon, father, Paul Ahearn; aunts, Bernice and Genevieve Creedon; uncles, William and Dermott Creedon, and James Cantwell; grandfather, Jeremiah Creedon; and grandmother, Catherine Creedon. She is survived by a brother, Kenneth Ahearn; aunt, Kathleen Cantwell; cousins, Lori Cantwell, Cathy Ribera, Michael Creedon, D.J. Creedon, Mary Fiorina; work associates; and friends. We will cherish the moments shared with Joyce, and we will keep her in our hearts and prayers forever. Raymond W. O'Hern Raymond W. O'Hern, age 89, passed away on Friday, September 7th, 2012 at Easton Hospital in Pa. Ray was born on October 14th, 1922 in Newark to the son of John T. and Anna (nee-Martin) O'Hern. He grew up in East Hanover and lived in Livingston. Ray then moved to Florham Park for 43 years before moving to Belvidere 10 years ago. Maurice D. Aherne AHERNE, Maurice D. 92, of Cohasset, formerly of Dorchester and Jamaica Plain, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2012, at the Golden Living Center in Cohasset. He was predeceased in 2007 by his beloved wife of almost 61 yrs, Cecilia (Cannon). He is survived by his 4 children, Francis X. "Frank" of Boston, Joan M. Burke & her husband James "Mickey" of Hull, Maureen C. Sarsfield & her husband Dennis of Bellingham, and Kathleen A. Poles & her husband Livio of Dorchester, 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his beloved sister, Mary "Eva" Aherne. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Maurice was born in Boston on Oct. 19, 1919, raised in Jamaica Plain, educated in Boston schools, and attended Northeastern University. He was a WWII Veteran, serving in the US Navy, Pacific Campaign. He was the last Charter member of the V.F.W. Post #722, Hyde Sq., Jamaica Plain. After the war, he returned to J.P., married his "Southie girl" Cecilia, raised his family, and enjoyed a long career with the US Postal Service. He was a faithful, lifelong communicant first for many years at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Jamaica Plain, and then later in life, in retirement at St. Brendan's Parish, Dorchester. In retirement he and Cecilia were volunteers for many years at the Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston. They enjoyed gardening and traveled extensively. He will be sorely missed by one and all. Robert William "Bob" O'Hearn Robert William "Bob" O'Hearn, 86, of Wichita Falls went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ Wednesday September 12, 2012. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. September 15, 2012, at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home Chapel in Wichita Falls officiated by Pastor Richard Rust. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. Visitation was held from 6-7 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2012, at the funeral home. A son of the late Lauren David and Lorine Stone O'Hearn, he was born on March 4, 1926, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was married to the late Buna Fae McDonald for 58 years. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a belly gunner on a B17 bomber and flew 18 missions over France and Germany during WWII. He went to photography school in Michigan. Bob was an extremely colorful character with a real zest for life. He started his first business as a street photographer in downtown Wichita Falls. He worked as a news photographer for Times Record News and ran Bob O'Hearn Photography. He then worked for KFDX Channel 3 TV as news and commercial photographer and videographer for 20 years. He opened Spectrum Video with the late Charlie King working many years with local advertising agencies. Bob raced cars, go carts, runabout speed boats, and had motorcycles. At the age of 36 he became a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. He then began learning Greek and Hebrew and memorized large portions of scripture. He taught himself to play piano from the encyclopedia. He and best friend Doris Sullivan spent the last six years going to bible study, jitterbugging, and playing poker at the senior zone. Mr. O'Hearn is preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia and husband Roland Axford, Ellean and husband Bill McNeil; and brother, Tom O'Hearn. He is survived by his daughters Kathy Johnston and husband Tommy, Peggy Perry and husband Gary, and son Danny O'Hearn, all of Wichita Falls; brother, Earl O'Hearn of Barryton, Mich.; sister-in-law, Bula Peirce of Byers, Texas; grandson, Cary Crowell and wife Shannon of Alpine, Calif.; granddaughters, Shelly Crowell of Littleton, Colo., and Stephenie Crowell of Houston, Texas, Ronny O'Hearn, Kelly Perry of Wichita Falls, Rusty Perry and wife Rachel of Iowa Park; and step-grandson, Tom McCluskey; great-grandsons, Jacob and Joseph Crowell and Coulson and Carson Perry; and great-granddaughter, Kassidy McCluskey; and Doris Sullivan. Sarah Ann (Harley) O'Hearn Harley O'Hearn, Sarah Ann Age 56, of Garnavillo, IA, formerly of Milwaukee, WI. Died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at her home, with family by her side. She was born the daughter of John Edward and Kathryn (Womelsdorff) Harley on April 14, 1956, in Milwaukee, WI. Sarah grew up in the Milwaukee area and graduated from Arrowhead High School. She later attended Wayland Academy for two years. Sarah worked in sales, providing mortgage companies the tools they needed to fulfill their duties. One day in Oconomowoc, WI, Sarah married her best friend, Bruce O'Hearn, in a ceremony that solidified their love for one another. Together, they enjoyed fishing and going on Harley rides. Sarah was also an avid auction attendee where she collected many antiques, which she enjoyed immensely. Sarah is survived by her husband Bruce; one daughter, Jessica (James Cullinane III) Harley and her children, Jesse and Jazzlyn; Bruce's son, Jason (Jenny) O'Hearn and his children, Isabella and Hunter; one sibling, John E. William J. O'Hearn March 22, 1926 — September 24, 2012 Newton Centre, Massachusetts William J. O'Hearn, of Newton Centre retired Director of Product Control at Polaroid, died in his home on Sept 24, 2012. He was 86. Born in Everett, Bill entered the Navy at 17 leaving Everett High where he was on the Track and Football teams, after the War he returned to Everett to complete High School and then attended St. Michaels College in Winooski VT on the GI Bill and graduating in 1951. He went to work for Polaroid retiring after 35 years, rising through the executive ranks and working on the company's international growth during its heyday. After his retirement in 1986 he was active in Polaroid retiree association. Bill maintained a keen interest in Everett High and was a member of the Everett E Club, and was also very involved with St. Michael's College serving as a President of the Alumni Association in 1974 and as an Associate Trustee of the College. He was a leading volunteer fundraiser for the school throughout his life. Calls to classmates were invariably answered with "how much do you want this time O'Hearn"? More often than not Bill came away with a gift. He was also an avid gardener and New England skier. In his youth Bill skied Tuckerman's Ravine. He was as still skiing in leather boots and vintage Head skis in his 70s. Bill's 80s were marked by a period of decline including long-spells in nursing homes. In 2010, defying expectations, he was able to return home with the help of care givers, family and friends. He was able to achieve his abiding hope to live the remainder of his life in his home of nearly 60 years. Bill was married to Joan M. (Kenney) O'Hearn for 60 years and was the loving father of Karen M. O'Hearn-Visinski of Amherst, NH and William J. Thomas Paul Ahearn PORTSMOUTH—Thomas Paul Ahearn, 89, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012. Tom was born April 19, 1923, in Portsmouth, the son of Edward Joseph and Nora Ahearn. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from Portsmouth High School and then went on to receive a bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire and a master's degree in education from Boston University. He spent his career in the field of education. He started as a grammar school teacher in Enfield, then continued his teaching career in Dover, where he served as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent of schools. He also served on the School Board in Portsmouth. As a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, Tom was a longtime and active member of both Immaculate Conception and St. James churches. He is best remembered for his beautiful singing voice at many weddings and funerals. In his retirement, Tom volunteered for both Hospice and Service Link. He also spent many hours with his faithful dog, Oliver. During the past seven years, Tom was a resident at The Mark Wentworth Home, where he was cared for by many loving people. The family wishes to thank all of those who contributed to Tom's quality of life during this time. He is survived by his nephews, Edward Ahearn, and Michael Ahearn and his wife, Cheryl; his nieces, Jacqueline (Ahearn) Gillespie and her husband, James, Mary (Ahearn) Chamberlain and Patricia Ahearn; and several greatnieces, greatnephews and great-greatnieces and great-greatnephews. He was predeceased by his father, Edward; his mother, Nora; his sister, Catherine; and his brother, James. Clifford J. Ahearn Clifford J. Ahearn of Brockton passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at the age of 90 years old. He was the loving husband of Phyllis (Moore) Ahearn of Brockton. Cliff and Phyllis were married 67 years. Mr . Ahearn is survived by his children, Clifford Ahearn and his wife Linda of East Bridgewater, Judith Mandeville and her husband Leonard of Brockton, and Brian Ahearn of Brockton.; his sister, Pauline Halloran and her husband Jack of Milford, Conn. He was a brother to the late James P. Ahearn. He is survived by eight grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. Of particular note, he was grateful to his caregiver, Rene Lupica of East Bridgewater. Mr. Ahearn was born May 7, 1922, in Fall River. He was the son of the late James Ahearn and Irene (Callahan) Ahearn. Clifford was educated in the greater Boston school system. He was also trained and certified/licensed as a refrigeration mechanic and restaurant equipment installer by the state of Massachusetts June 8, 1949, and was well-known for his work with many establishments. Mr. Ahearn was employed for 40 years with Bay State Restaurant Products of Brockton. Mr. Ahearn served his country in World War II by participating in the Pacific Theater. His incursions include India, Burma, China and Sri Lanka. His service and efforts were well regarded and he was honorably discharged in 1945 from the U.S. Army. Mr. Ahearn was a loving father to his children and loving grandfather to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a hard working diligent provider for his family. He was extremely well liked by all who he came in contact with and was well respected. He enjoyed conversing, telling stories about life, with anyone, and he was able to relate to all ages. He was a compassionate understanding man, never held a grudge, and was true to his word. He was adaptable to adverse circumstances and was able to find a way to cope and move on. As he often said, the first 95 years are the most difficult. He had an abundance of admirable traits. Clifford enjoyed boating, motorcycling, and in his mid years learned to ski and enjoyed it for many years thereafter. He loved being outdoors, and he understood how to enjoy the simple things in life that surround us to great satisfaction. He particularly loved to fix things and tinker and always accepted the challenge, and he would find a way to make the repair. He loved life and enjoyed it to its fullest with all it has to offer. William Ahearn William Ahearn, chairman of the board of trustees of St. Peter's Prep, died last night after a brief illness, the Jersey City high school announced yesterday. He was 55. A resident of Cranford and native of Jersey City, Ahearn graduated from St. Peter's Prep in 1975 and became chairman of the board in 2010. Under his tenure, the school completed its first phase of Prep's campus master plan, which included the construction of a new science center on Warren Street, the school said in a statement. At the time of his death, Ahearn was the assistant vice president for university communications and marketing at Rider University in Lawrenceville. "Bill's creative and strategic thinking actualized through his love of his family and of St. Peter's Prep, made him the embodiment of the Ignatian model of leadership," said school president Robert E. Reiser. Ahearn leaves behind his wife Seton, his son Liam, and daughter Caitlin. The wake will be held Friday, 4 to 8 p.m., at the O'Keefe Commons at St. Peter's Prep. He worked for Morgan Stanley Smith & Barney in Norwell as a Senior Vice President and has been in the financial business helping people since 1971. William J. Ahearn William J. Ahearn, 55, a much beloved husband, father, son, uncle, friend and business colleague, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012 surrounded by his family at the University Hospital of Princeton. He was predeceased by his parents William and Mildred Ahearn (nee: Cardone). He also earned a Masters in Communications from Fordham in 1981. Bill had a long and distinguished career as a public relations executive and was employed in senior management positions by a number of firms including Marine Midland Bank, Prudential Securities, Price Waterhouse, Lehman Brothers and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Mr. Ahearn was currently employed as the Assistant Vice President for Communications and Marketing at Rider University. Bill also held a number of leadership positions at Saint Peter's Preparatory School, including President of the Parent's Association, a member of the Board of Trustees and, along with his wife Seton Caulfield Ahearn, the Chairmanship of the School's inaugural Gala that raises funds for the Prep's financial assistance program. Mr. Ahearn became the sixth chairman of the board in 2010. His tenure saw the competition of the first phase of Prep's campus master plan, including the construction of the Donald P. Moriarty, '48 Science Center and O'Keefe Commons. Bill's leadership guided a period of ongoing investment in Prep's future, not only through improvements to the physical plant but also through significant initiatives in Ignatian/Jesuit identity, faculty retention, financial planning and curriculum development. An avid golfer, Mr. Ahearn was a member of the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield. Mr. Ahearn has been for 31 years, the devoted and loving husband of Seton Caulfield Ahearn. He has been a caring father of Liam D. Ahearn and his wife Allison and Caitlin M. Ahearn. Survivors also include his aunt Ann Cardone, mother-in-law Rose Caulfield and sisters and brothers-in-law: Mary Beth and jack Caulfield and Maureen and James Doolan. Kevin M. Ahern Former state employee LYNN — Mr. Kevin M. Ahern, age 59, of Lynn, died Thursday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Mary (Bowdren) Ahern. A lifelong [sic] Lynn resident, he was a graduate of Lynn English High School and Salem State College, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. Kevin worked for the State of Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance for many years. He had also worked for the family business, Ahern Movers and Riggers in Lynn. He was a member of MENSA, was an avid chess player and enjoyed astronomy. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, and he will be remembered as a beloved brother, uncle and mentor. He is survived by three sisters, Carole Roepsch of Lynn, Kathryn Powicki and her husband Edwin of Swampscott and M. Patricia Marsh of Hamilton; two brothers, Thomas "Joe" Ahern and his wife Diane of Swampscott and Fred Ahern and his wife Fran of Nahant; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Richard and Maureen Ahern and brother-in-law of the late Thomas Roepsch. Verna (Ahern) Shreves Verna Ahern-Shreves, 102 years old, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on November 14, 2012, at Dow-Rummel. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 am Monday, November 19, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1501 West 26th, Sioux Falls. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass, also at Christ the King. Verna Elizabeth Hugh was born December 6, 1909, in Pueblo, Colorado, to John and Marie (Caldwell) Hugh. As a teenager, her family moved to Denver, CO where she graduated from East High School. Verna was united in marriage to Gerald Ahern at the Cathedral in Denver in 1940. The couple moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1945, and in 1948 started the Ahern Insurance Co., where Verna served as Vice-President, until 1979. Verna was active in her church, Christ The King, and also loved to play Bridge. She was an avid golfer, and was twice chairman of the Women's Golf of Minnehaha Country Club. Verna worked on many city tournaments. Her husband, Gerald, passed away on February 7, 1986. Verna married Dr. Howard Shreves in Sioux Falls, on February 2, 2001. Dr. Howard Shreves passed away on April 1, 2003. Edward F. Ahern, Jr. OXFORD — Edward F. Ahern, Jr., 85, died Saturday, December 1, 2012. He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Dorothy M. (Boerner) Ahern who died in 1996. He is survived by three children, Karen E. Ahern and her husband Elliot Savitzky of Boston, Janet K. Kahane and her husband Ernie of Acton, and Timothy E. Ahern of Southbridge; a sister, E. Ann Conover of Menifee, CA; four grandchildren, Adam Savitzky, Danny Savitzky, Jill Kahane, and Jonathan Kahane; and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased one sister. He was born in Worcester, the son of the late Edward F. and Esther C. (Froggatt) Ahern Sr., and lived in Worcester before moving to Oxford in 1952. He graduated from South High School in Worcester and later from Duke University in 1951. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Ahern was a chemist at White and Bagley Company for over 40 years, retiring in 1994. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Roch's Church in Oxford. His hobbies included black & white photography, model ship building, wood-working, collecting big band music, and playing table tennis. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at St. Roch's Church, 332 Main St., Oxford. Burial will follow at St. Roch's Cemetery, Oxford. Carol (Conheady) Ahearn Carol Ahearn, age 79, wife of David Ahearn & resident of Derby, entered into eternal rest on Dec. 11, 2012 at Griffin Hospital. She was born Dec. 24, 1933 in Meriden, daughter of the late William & Veronica Mead Conheady. Carol was a graduate of Laurelton Hall of Milford and La Salle College of Newport, R.I. She worked as a receptionist for the former Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford and was a parishioner of St. Jude's Church in Derby. In addition to her husband, she leaves to cherish her memory her son David W. Ahearn, her daughter, Ellen O'Brien and several grandchildren and nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, James P. Conheady. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 15 with friends asked to go directly to St. Jude's Church in Derby for 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby. Debra A. (Ahearn) Hilborn Debra A. Ahearn Hilborn, 50, of Baldwinsville, passed away Sunday with the love of her life, her husband Gary, at her side at Francis House after a courageous and valiant battle with ovarian cancer. Debbie was born and raised in Baldwinsville and graduated from C.W. Baker High School in 1980. She graduated from Herkimer County Community College in 1982. She was employed at a variety of places including Marine Midland Bank, Pyrotenax and Home Properties until she found her true calling, which was as a teaching assistant with Baldwinsville Central School District. She had been at Baker High School for many years. The students and staff adored Debbie. She inspired not only a love of learning, but encouraged a passion for life and to live with integrity. Debbie was recognized by the Baker High School Class of 2012 as a distinguished guest at the 143rd Commencement Ceremony for the lasting impact she had on the life of students. Debbie and Gary loved to travel. Her very favorite place was Disney World, which is where they got engaged. Her love of life and infectious smile touched all that met her and will live on in the lives of all who were known to Debbie. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Frances Ahearn. Survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Gary E. Hilborn Jr.; her sister, Donna Hamilton; and several nieces and nephews. Debbie leaves a beautiful legacy of many friends, most especially her cherished high school friends, her college friends and her Baker High School friends. They were blessed to have spent her last weeks sharing memories, creating new memories, and sharing so much love with her and Gary. Walter Thomas Ahearn Walter Thomas Ahearn, 90, long time resident of Columbia, SC, died December 18, 2012, at Bailey Manor, Clinton, SC. He was the son of the late Patrick and Elsie Ahearn of Schernectady, NY and the husband of the late Mary (May) Baillie Ahearn. Survivors include his daughter, Susan Ahearn Mitchell and her husband, John W. Mitchell of Cross Anchor, SC; and grandsons, Kenneth and Richard. Interest in forestry led to his being a "Hot Shot" crew chief for the US Forest Service in California's Angeles National Forest. He graduated Cum Laude from Syracuse University College of Forestry in 1943 and immediately entered the Marine Corps. In WWII, he served in the 1st Marine Division as a Codes and Ciphers officer with the Navajo Code Talkers in the Pacific Theatre, including Okinawa and China. He began work as a forester in South Carolina and then joined the SC Forestry Commission, retiring as Assistant State Forester after 36 years. He was SC Affiliate for the National Wildlife Federation for many years and served as a SC Wildlife Federation Emeritus Board member. His many honors include recognitions from the USDA, SC Water Resources Commission, American Society of Foresters, and Alpha Zi Sigma. He received The Conservation Award from the Woodmen of the World, the Golden Cross Award from Bailey Manor for outstanding service in the US Marine Corps, the Distinguished Service Award from the Appalachian Society of American Foresters, Forest Conservationists of the Year (State Wildlife Federation, National Wildlife Federation, Sears-Roebuck Foundation) and the Society of American Foresters Certificate of Appreciation. He was award the first F. Bartow Culp award from the SC Wildlife Federation for Distinguished Service. He was "Ranger Parks" on a weekly state-wide radio teaching program, writing and providing lesson plans. This was a forerunner of SC ETV-Radio educational programs. A celebration of Life will be held in the Bailey Manor Chapel Sunday, December 23, at 2:00 p.m. A special thanks goes to his wonderful caregivers during his stay at Bailey Manor. Alice M. Ahern Holden—Alice M. Ahern, 92, of Holden, formerly of Worcester, died Saturday, December 22, 2012 in the Holden Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Alice was born in Worcester, a daughter of the late Cornelius and Mary (Fennessy) Ahern. She was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Boyda, Ann Roy and Margie Ahern and by six brothers, Edward, Thomas, Cornelius, James, Patrick and John Ahern. Alice is survived by several nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces. Alice was a Registered Nurse and worked for the Veteran's Administration. She worked at hospitals in Reno, Nevada, Togus, Maine and Jamaica Plain and retired in 1979. Alice was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving as a Navy Nurse. She graduated from Ascension High School, Worcester and St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, Worcester. Ms. Ahern earned her Bachelor's degree and her Master's degree from Boston College. She was a member of the Notre Dame Alumni of Ascension High School.
