Sherman J. Ahearn Sherman J. Ahearn 30 died Tuesday Afternoon at the Rumford Community hospital following surgery. He had been a patient at the hospital since last Friday. He was born at Rumford, the son of Fred and the late Lillian Murdock Ahearn. He was a cook by profession. Surviving are his father, three sisters: Mrs. Rene Bilodeau, Gardner Mass.: Mrs Edwin C. John Joseph Ahern    John J. Ahern, 60, husband of the late Mrs. Catherine (Manuel) Ahern, a resident of Woburn the greater part of his life and the owner and proprietor of the well known South End restaurant Jake's Cafe located at the corner of Main and Conn Streets, this city, died suddenly last night at the home of his daughter Mrs. John McKeering, 111 Main Street, Woburn, the victim of a heart attack. Mr. Ahern had not been well for the past few days, but his death was entirely unexpected and comes as a shock to his wide circle of friends.    He was born in Cambridge, Mass., the son of the late David and Mary Ahern, but had lived the greater part of his life in Woburn where for years he was a well known painting contractor, before entering the restaurant business. In his youth he was a well known athlete and was active in boxing and wrestling circles.    His wife, Mrs. Catherine (Manuel) Ahern, died twenty-eight years ago and he leaves one daughter Mrs. Mary McKeering, and three sisters Mrs. Augustus Westland of Woburn, Mrs. Catherine Sullivan of Winchester and Mrs. Garnet Gamester of Cambridge. Several nieces and nephews also survive him.    The funeral will be held on Monday morning, February 12, from the home of his sister Mrs. Augustus Westland, 74 Main Street, Woburn, at 8 a.m. and a High Mass of Requiem will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church, Winchester, at 9 o'clock. The funeral of John J. Ahern, 60, husband of the late Mrs. Catherine (Manuel) Ahern, a resident of Woburn the greater part of his life and proprietor of the well known south end restaurant, Jake's Cafe, located at the corner of Main and Conn Streets, was held from the home of his sister Mrs. Augustus Westland, 74 Main Street, Woburn, at 8 a.m. and a High Mass of Requiem was celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church, Winchester, at 9 o'clock. Following the services interment was at Calvary cemetery, East Woburn.    Mr. Ahern passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. John McKeering, 111 Main Street, Woburn, suddenly last Thursday night the victim of a heart attack.    He was born in Cambridge, Mass., the son of the late David and Mary Ahern, but had lived the greater part of his life here in Woburn, where before entering the restaurant business he was a well known painting contractor. April 22—Patrick Ahern, former patrolman of the New Rochelle Police Department for twenty-six years, who was known as "Fighting Paddy Ahern" because of his physical prowess, died yesterday at his home at the age of 65. Theresa (Smith) O'Hern Wife of Demo Central Committeeman Dies Mrs. Theresa Smith O'Hern, Peoria, wife of Charles V. [Vincent] O'Hern, attorney and Democratic State Central committeeman, died at 3 a.m. Friday in the St. Francis hospital, friends here were informed yesterday. Mrs. O'Hern was the mother of Betty Ann [University of Illinois] '38, a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, and Charles V. Jr., '36, Beta Theta Pi. Taken ill Thursday morning, Mrs. O'Hern died of a blood clot early Friday. The body was taken to the Boland mortuary, where friends may call this afternoon and evening. Mary (Ahern) Downs Mrs. John H. Downs of Peru, sister of Mrs. Michael Crowley of Au Sable Forks, died Tuesday, June 3, after an illness of nearly seven years. Mrs. Downs, who was well known in Au Sable Forks, was stricken with a stroke six years ago last March which left her partially paralyzed, but she took an active interest in life despite her condition until about eight weeks ago when she began to fail. Mrs. Downs was born Nov. 25th, 1858, in the town of Black Brook. She married John H. Downs on November 26, 1884, and of this union five daughters were born. Mrs. Downs had a cheerful disposition always doing for her family and friends. She leaves to mourn her loss besides her husband five daughters: Mrs. Patrick F. Fitzpatrick, Peru; Miss Jennie Downs, Miss Nellie Downs, Miss Bessie Downs, or Peru; and Mrs. John J. Rooney of Dannemora; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick of Peru and Charlotte Rooney of Dannemora; two sisters, Miss Nancy Ahern of Saranac and Mrs. Michael Crowley of Au Sable Forks. Her funeral will be held Thursday morning, June 5th, at 10 o'clock from St. Augustine's church, Peru. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mary Elizabeth (McGill) O'Hern Mrs. Mary Elizabeth O'Hern, 236 1/2 Locust Str., died at her home at 9:00 o'clock Wednesday night. The body is at the Bennett & Ashworth Funeral Home, and the funeral will be held from there to St. Raphael's Cathedral at 9:00 o'clock Saturday morning. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Mrs. O'Hern was born at Winona, Minn., and spent the last 51 years in Dubuque. She was a member of the Cathedral parish and of the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Society. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. C.A. (Eleanor) Welsh, Miss Lillian O'Hern, Mrs. Thomas (Calista) Doyle, and Mrs. Edmund (Marion) Gross, all of Dubuque; two sons, Harold O'Hern, Sioux City, Ia, and John O'Hern of Dubuque; one brother, Edward McGill, Winona; one sister, Mrs Anna Wilbur, Muskegon Heights, Mich.; and ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Daniel B. Ahern HARTFORD, Conn., Sept. 4 (AP) —Daniel B. (Big Dan) Ahern, hailed in Hartford as the world's tallest policeman, died last night in his home at the age of 67. For years Mr. Ahern, who retired in 1924, patrolled Hartford's tough East Side, where his towering six feet, seven and one-half inches commanded respect for law and order. — New York Times 5 September 1941

Timothy T. Ahearn Timothy T. Ahearn, a retired horse car driver and motorman, a veteran of the blizzard of 1888, died yesterday at his home, 19-25 Madison Street, Ridgewood, Queens, after a brief illness, at the age of 74. On March 12, 1888, the day of the great blizzard, Mr. Ahearn was driving his horse car on the old Fulton line in the Brunswick section of Brooklyn. The car, in which were four men passengers, became stuck in snowdrifts miles away from help. Mr. Ahearn kept himself and the passengers warm by tearing up the seats and other wooden interior furnishings and feeding them into the stove. When aid arrived two days later both the horses were dead and the four passengers had to be taken to a hospital, but the driver merely ate a big steak and returned to assist in digging out two other cars stalled further down the line. Later he was a motorman. Four daughters survive. — New York Times 17 September 1941

Bodies of Greater-Lowell Soldiers Sent Here for Burial LOWELL—The bodies of the three greater-Lowell soldiers killed Thursday night in a truck crash which occurred at Albermarle, N. C., during a "blackout" in connection with the gigantic army maneuvers in the south, arrived here over the week-end for burial. The victims are:  . . .  Private Frederick G. Ahearn, 194 Dalton road, Chelmsford, is the son of James A. and Mary B. (Whalen) Ahearn. He was 19 years old and was in the service for the past nine months. He attended the Chelmsford grammar, and high schools, from which he was recently graduated. Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers, Herbert L. Ahearn of Dracut and Edward C. Ahearn of Chelmsford; and several nieces and nephews. The body was removed to the O'Brien funeral home, 33 Whipple street, where friends may call. — The Lowell Sun 20 October 1941

Catherine (Russell) Ahern Mrs. Catherine Ahern: A resident of this city for half a century and a highly respected member of St. Peter's Parish, Mrs. Catherine Ahern, widow of the late George Ahern, died on Friday March 27 at her home 462 Bolivar Street. The late Mrs. Ahern was born in Thurles, Ireland a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Russell. She had been ill for two weeks. She is survived by four sons and two daughters as follows: Mrs. H. Anderson (Alieen) of New York City; William Ahern Peterborough, George Ahern Windsor, Theresa "Tess" Ahern, Joseph Ahern and David Ahern all of Peterborough. One brother William Russell of Ireland. The funeral will take place from the family residence 462 Bolivar St. on Monday March 30. at 9:00 o'clock for requiem mass at St. Peter's Cathedral. Ulysses S. Swan Plymouth.—Ulysses S. Swan, 73, passed away at Waldo at 7:30 Tuesday night. He had been in ill health for six years and was seriously ill since January 1. Born Dec. 25, 1868, in the Town of Sherman of Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Isabella Swan, his marriage to Maggie O'Hearn took place in 1897 and the couple lived on farms near the Town of Sherman and Lyndon until they moved to Waldo to reside two years ago. He is survived by his wife and four children, Mac and Robert of Cascade, Mrs. Arno (Isabella) Bartel of Sheboygan, and Mrs. Ralph (Ella) Wilson [SIC] of Waldo. A sister aslo survives, Mrs. George Glover of Rockville Center, L. I., N. Y. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 at the Wittkopp Funeral Home with the Rev., F. E. Warren, pastor of the United Brethren Church of Cascade, officiating. Burial will be in the town of Sherman cemetery. Death of W. Francis Ahern [photo] W. FRANCIS AHERN Thousands of the readers of the Australian Worker, Sydney, and the multitude of Labor supporters who were his personal friends, will learn with regret of the death of W. Francis Ahern, which took place at his home in Sydney last week after a prolonged illness which he bore with great fortitude. Frank Ahern, who was one of Australia's outstanding Labor journalists, for the past twenty-five years was associated with the Sydney "Worker" and his service to the cause of the workers, and his beloved Australia, will live long after the memory of his happy personality fades from the mundane sphere. Writing of his demise in the current issue of the Sydney "Worker" Editor H. E. Boote, his friend and colleague for so many years, says of him: "Everybody liked Frank Ahern. He had a way with him that took the bitterness out of even the strongest differences of opinion. His own views, nevertheless, were always firmly held and cogently stated. He held fast to Socialist principles, which he thoroughly understood and convincingly advocated. Compromise was not in his nature, but neither was intolerance of other people's opinions when honestly expressed. "As a Labor journalist no subject of public importance was beyond the range of his pen. As a member of "The Worker" staff his all-round knowledge and his unusual memory were very valuable assets of which his colleagues frequently availed themselves. "During the conscription campaigns of 1916 and 1917 he did splendid work on the 'No' side, and his articles were largely drawn upon by anti-conscription speakers everywhere. "Never was there one more loyal to his mates and fellow workers. He played his part faithfully always, and more especially gave of his best in times of crisis, without counting the intensified labour it might entail. His dominating desire on all occasions was to do his job well and conscientiously, and act in comradely harmony with those with whom he was associated in the difficult tasks of Labor propaganda by the written word. "Add that he was beloved by his family, whose well-being was ever in his thoughts, and you will have some idea of what manner of man was William Francis Ahern. "Born at Waralah, N.S.W., 58 years ago, he was thoroughly Australian in his sentiments, while at the same time socialistically international in his outlook on the world. LT. COL. GEORGE AHERN, AN OFFICER 60 YEARS ——————— Forestry Expert Fought for the Conservation of Woodland ——————— WASHINGTON, May 13 (AP) - Lieut. Col. George P. Ahern, U. S. A., retired, died here today at the age of 82. He was graduated in 1882 from West Point. Colonel Ahern served in Cuba and the Philippines during the war with Spain, and remained in the Philippines to organize and direct the Office of Patents, Copyrights, and Trade-Marks and later the Bureau of Forestry for the Philippine Government. He was the author of several books on forestry.    Retired with the rank of major in 1906, he held various active assignments later and was promoted to lieutenant colonel, retired, in 1930.    Colonel Ahern leaves a widow, Jean Gill Ahern of Washington.    Colonel Ahern explored the last block of unmapped territory in Montana in 1888. He was the explorer of Glacier National Park and his work is perpetuated on the maps that list Ahern Pass and Ahern Glacier. He fought for more than forty years for the conservation of our forest resources.    As a soldier he saw service in the Indian campaigns of the Northwest, the Spanish-American War, the Boxer Rebellion and the Philippine Insurrection. During the World War he was first assistant to the Chief of Military Intelligence and afterward Secretary of the War College. For gallantry in action in the Spanish War on June 30, 1898, he received the Silver Star decoration.    He was born in New York on Dec. 29, 1859, the son of Patrick Henry Ahern and Ann Dwyer Ahern, who came to this country from Ireland. He was "a son of the Irish revolution," in his own words. His father, who was in the dry goods business, was a flag bearer in the Battle of Bull Run.    His first active service was in the Indian campaigns in the Northwest. Chief Sitting Bull gave him the title of Chief Two Crows for his kindness in dealing with the Indians. He had a lasting empathy for the Indians and unceasingly endeavoured to obtain justice for them in Washington. — The New York Times 14 May 1942

A graduate of West Point in 1882, he served in Cuba and the Philippines and remained in Manila to organize and direct the Office of Patents, Copyrights and Trademarks and the Bureau of Forestry for the Philippine government. Thomas Ahern Rites to Be Tomorrow Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow for Thomas Ahern, prominent federal and county employee, who died Friday. He lived at 903 28th street. Ahern was the brother of the late David Ahern, county sheriff 28 years ago and supervisor for three terms. Tom Ahern was chief collector for the bureau of internal revenue for twenty years. A native of Maryland, Ahern came to Sacramento 77 years ago. He was 84. He held jobs as claims clerk for the county and bookkeeper for the city. Prominent in sports, he was known as one of the oldest professional baseball players in the state. He was a star player for the famous Alta team of the late 1800's. Mass Is Held For Thomas Ahern, 84 A requiem mass was celebrated today in St. francis Church for Thomas Ahern, 84, retired chief collector for the federal bureau of internal revenue who died Friday at Sutter Hospital. Burial was private. Ahern worked for the revenue bureau for twenty years. He was the brother of the late David Ahern, former sheriff of Sacramento County and supervisor for three terms. Tom Ahern was born in Maryland and came to Sacramento seventy-seven years ago. At one time he was employed as a claims clerk for the county and for a time was a bookkeeper for the City of Sacramento. Interested in all sports, Ahern was once considered one of the oldest professional baseball players in california, having played on the old Alta team in the late 1800's. Julia (OHearn) Holland The funeral of Mrs. Julia (OHearn) Holland, 91 Crawford street, a resident of Lowell for many years, took place this morning at 8 30 o'clock from the O'Donnell funeral home, Pawtucket street at Fletcher. The cortege proceeded to St. Rita's church where at 9 o'clock a funeral mass was celebrated by Rev. Francis L. McGrath. The choir, under the direction of Mrs. J. C. Goodwin, sang the Gregorian mass, the solos being sustained by Mrs. Warren P. Riordan, Miss Dorothy Callahan, Mrs. Frank Kappler, Joseph McAvinnue and John J. Flynn. Mrs. Goodwin presided at the organ. Among those in attendance at the mass were the following members of the Blessed Virgin sodality of St. Rita's church: Mrs. Thomas Keefe, Mrs. Thomas Brosnan, Mrs. John Fenlon and Mrs. Joseph McDonald. There were many floral tributes and many mass cards. The bearers were Conrad Rondeau, Joseph Quinn, Leo Carter, Gerard Alexander, Rudolph Rondeau and Michael Welch. At the grave, Rev. Fr. McGrath read the committal prayers and burial was in the family lot in St. Patrick's cemetery, under the directions of Undertakers James F. O'Donnell & Sons. John J. Ahearn Officials of the Ottawa Electric Railway Company joined with relatives and friends this morning in honoring the memory of John J. Ahearn, inspector of rolling stock for the O.E.R. and member of a well known Ottawa family who died in his 81st year. Before joining the O.E.R. staff, Mr. Ahearn was recognized as one of the outstanding telegraph operators in America. The funeral was held from the Brady and Harris funeral residence, 375 Lisgar street, to St. Patrick's church where a solemn requiem high mass was celebrated at 9 o'clock. Rt. Rev. Mgr. George D. Prudhomme, parish priest, officiated and was attended by Rev. Father W. J. Radley and Rev. Father G. Fogarty as deacon and sub-deacon. Burial took place in Notre Dame cemetery. Cheif mourners were his sister, Miss Norah Ahearn of Ottawa and a brother, William S. Ahearn, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and his two first cousins, J. M. Ahearn and William Ahearn. Among those in the cortege were T. Frank Ahearn, president; David N. Gill, general manager; George L. Snelling, secretary-treasurer, and C. Michael F. Ahearn Michael F. Ahearn, who was a police hostler for 29 years until his retirement in 1939, died yesterday at his home, 35 Clover Street, after a brief illness. Mr. Ahearn was a member of the Holy Name Society of the Police Department, the Police Benevolent Association and the Holy Name Society of St. Anthony's Church, Nepera Park. Mr. Ahearn was active in Police Department outings and promoted and participated in the "tug of war" games between the Police Department and other civic departments. His most recent assignment was at the Police Garage on Dock Street. Surviving are his wife, Bridget O'Brien Ahearn; one son, Private First Class Thomas F. Ahearn stationed at the Lockport Army Air Base in Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Daniel and Patrick Ahearn of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Linehan and Mrs Christopher J. Maroney both of Yonkers; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the John J. Whalen Funeral Home, 101 Ashburton Avenue on Friday at 9:30 A. M. Francis Xavier Ahern ORANGEBURG, N. Y., April 16—Francis X. Ahern, supervisor of the Rockland County State Hospital here, died of a stroke at the hospital tonight at the age of 58. He was born in the Greenwich Village section of New York, and was graduated from St. Francis Xavier College. For the last twenty-five years he was associated with the New York State hospital system. Surviving are two brothers, the Rev. Michael J. Ahern of Weston (Mass.) Joseph F. Ahern Arlington Officer Dies in Air Crash Near Pensacola ARLINGTON, Aug, 9—A midair crash involving two naval training planes caused the death of Lieut. (j. g.) Joseph S. [should be F.] Ahern, 25, former Arlington resident, near Pensacola Fla., Sunday, according to word received today by relatives here. Three other Navy men died in the mishap, it was reported. Lieut. Ahern, a flight-training officer, was married to Eleanor Granfield of Longmeadow. Her father, Judge William G. Granfield of Longmeadow, said his daughter notified him of the tragedy by telephone from Pensacola this morning. Arlington relatives disclosed they were informed that Lieut. Ahern made an unsuccessful attempt at a parachute landing. The young officer graduated from Arlington High School in 1936, from Lawrence Academy, Groton, in 1937, and from Harvard University in 1941. He was prominent in High School football and basketball, also playing basketball with the Harvard Jayvees. He entered the Navy in May, 1941, just before completion of his law-school course. Lieut. Ahern was a son of Joseph W. Ahern of 213 Broadway, this town. Besides his wife and a father, he leaves two brothers, attorney John L. Ahern, Arlington, and Paul Ahern, student at St. John's High, North Cambridge. Judge Granfield flew to Florida today to arrange funeral services. — The Boston Globe 10 August 1943

Patrick O'Hearn ELIZABETH, N. J., Sep. 14 — Patrick O'Hearn, former yardmaster at the Elizabeth freight yards of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, by which he was employed for forty-two years, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Dean, in Hampton, N. J. His age was 90. He was retired twenty-five years ago. Surviving besides Mrs. Dean are three other daughters, Mrs. Edward Garthwaite of Roselle Park and Mrs. Henry Bobertz and Mrs. Catherine Connolly of this city, and two sons, Thomas and James O'Hearn of Roselle Park. — New York Times 15 September 1943

Alice M. Ahern Mrs. Ahern Dies Following Stroke FALLON, Nev., Jan. 29, (Special)—Mrs. James Ahern, a resident of Fallon for 30 years, died Thursday following an illness of two weeks. She suffered a stroke of paralysis. A native of Medford, Ore., 68 years of age, Mrs. Ahern leaves her husband, seven children and eight grandchildren. William Patrick Ahearn Funearl of Former Resident CANAAN, Conn.—Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 8.30 with a high mass of requiem at St. Joseph's Chuirch in Winsted for William Patrick Ahearn, 86, former Canaan resident. Committal services were held at the Forest View Chapel and interment will be in the new St. Joseph's Cemetery in the spring. Mr. Ahearn died at his home this week following a long illness. He was born in Copeke, N. Y., April 14, 1858. He was a railroad engineer and operated the Mountain express daily from Canaan to Hartford which was a branch of the Central New England Railroad. He was employed there until his retirement. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers and the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph's Church. He had resided in Winsted for the past 44 years. The surviviors are three daughters, Mrs. Mary Hicks of Canaan; the Misses Jane and Julia Ahearn of Winsted; a son, George, and four grandchildren including Mrs. [James?] Place of Canaan — The Berkshire County Eagle 5 April 1944

Annie Jane (O'Hern) Nolan Annie Jane (O'Hern) Nolan, member of a pioneer Madison county Family, died last Friday at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines after a two weeks illness. She was 84 years of age. Mrs. Nolan was the former Annie O'Hern, daughter of Timothy O'Hern, who was a pioneer settler in the Irish settlement near St. Patrick's Church. When she was 18 years old, she was married to Lawrence Nolan, and they farmed in Madison County for many years. For the past 20 years she had been living with her daughter, Mrs. L. E. French of Des Moines. In addition to Mrs. French, she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Edward P. Martin of Marshalltown, Mrs. H. E. Brennan of Dodge City, KS, and Mrs. M. T. Cahill of Des Moines; a son, John Nolan of Garden City, KS, 21 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday from All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines, with burial in the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Lee Township. — Winterset Madisonian 3 January 1945

John W. Ahern Official of Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association John W. Ahern of 21 East Sixty-sixth Street, treasurer of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of New York, an adjunct of the Carnegie Foundation, died yesterday in the Doctors Hospital after a long illness. In his youth Mr. Ahern was in the real estate business here before joining the Lawyers Mortgage Company, with which he spent twenty-seven years. He resigned as vice president in 1934 to direct the mortgage business of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association, from which he received a temporary leave of absence two years later to serve as assistant to the administrator of the Federal Housing Administration. He leaves a widow, Mabel; four sisters and three brothers. Denis "Dinny" Ahern The death occurred at Ayr on Saturday of one of the best known and respected of the district's farming community, Mr. Denis Ahern, of Airdale. The late Mr. "Dinny" Ahern was a native of Athea, County Limerick, Ireland, where he was born in 1871. As a youth of 19 he came to Australia and went to the Lower Burdekin, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits on land owned by his uncle, the late Mr. W. D. Casey, so well known in Charters Towers mining. After 18 months there Mr. Ahern went to the Towers, where he became an amalgamator at the St. George Mill. He was a successful speculator In mining, and later acquired the farm lands at Ayr which he had known earlier, and since 1903 he had made his home there. While engaged in sugar growing, Mr. Ahern was always interested in dairy cattle. He brought the first Illaqarras to the Ayr district, and always had a few good cows, and at the Ayr and Towneville shows took a keen interest in the dairy section. He believed in feeding well, and to ensure having feed in good seasons and bad, grew and conserved fodder for his cattle. Pastures became a hobby with him, and at the time of his death he had a nice lot of South African grasses growing, for which he had written to South Africa. General Smuts had taken a personal interest in these, and had the seed despatched to North Queensland. Mr. Ahern had the greatest faith in the Lower Burdekin district and its people. A progressive farmer, he was ever ready to assist others, and earned the respect of a large circle of friends, evidence of which was the large crowd which attended his funeral on Sunday afternoon. The deceased is survived by his widow, three sons (William, a prisoner of the Japanese in Hongkong; John and Joseph, Ayr), and five daughters (Mrs. Breen, Brisbane; Mrs. Lawson, Ayr; Mrs. Clayton, Ayr; and Misses Mary and Rene, Sydney). George E. Ahearn    LOWELL — Pvt. George E. Ahearn, 22, died near Oberschild in Germany on Aug. 17 as the result of a skull fracture, according to information received from the war department by his wife, the former Jeanette LaFleur of Bristol, Conn.    The son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Ahearn, 121 Crosby street, the young coast artilleryman had written to his wife and parents on Aug. 5, stating that he would be on the way home shortly. No details revealing the cause of his fatal injuries were forthcoming from the army.    A graduate of the Butler school, Ahearn attended Trade school prior to enlisting in the army in March, 1943. He had spent a year and a half overseas.    In addition to his parents and his wife, he leaves six brothers, Wilfred, James, and John J. Jr., in the service, and Richard, Daniel and Lawrence at home; two sisters Mrs. Vesper Blaisdell of Merrimac and Mrs. Wilfred Ahearn of Lowell; three nieces and three nephews. — The Lowell Sun 30 August 1945

Pvt. John Ahern Rites to Be Held Saturday A solemn memorial mass will be read at 9:30 o'clock Saturday morning in Holy Cross church, 65th st. and Maryland ave., for Pvt. John J. Ahern. Private Ahern, 22 years old, was killed in France, November 20, 1944, while serving with General Patton's third army at the siege of Metz. A graduate of Holy Cross elementary school and Mt. Carmel High school, Private Ahern attended Chicago Technical college before he entered service in February, 1944. He went overseas in August of the same year. William Edmund Ahern The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. William Edmund Ahern. Coming to Wellington at an early age, Mr. Ahern was educated at St. Patrick's College, and joined the New Zealand Railways head office accountants' staff as a cadet, after having served as booking clerk and goods clerk at Lambton. He was one of the few members of the chief accountant's staff located in the Government Buildings when he retired in 1930. Mr. Ahern was a member of the Wellesley Club, Wellington Racing Club, and a former member of the Wellington Football Club, of which he had been vice-president for over 20 years. When the recent war broke out he joined the New Zealand Insurance Company's staff, and was in that wartime employment until his death. He is survived by his widow, and a daughter, Miss Yvonne Ahern. — The Wellington Evening Post 8 October 1945

James Ahern Fallon Rancher Called by Death FALLON, Jan 16. (Special) — Funeral services for the late James Ahern were held at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's church, Rev. Jonn Sibon, clergyman. He died suddenly Monday in his sleep. A resident here since 1910, he engaged in ranching until recently. Mr. and Mrs. Ahern married on November 23, 1902, in Medford, Okla., and she died a year ago. Of the nine children born to the couple, seven survive. They are three sons, James I. Ahern of Eugene, Ore., John P. Ahern of Las Vegas and Basil Ahern of Sparks, and four daughters, Mrs. Willard Marke of Sparks, Mrs. Charles Melendy, Mrs. William G. Miller and Miss Desire Ahern, all of Fallon. Lieut. Commander William John Ahern The sinking of the Lusitania is recalled by the death at the age of 83 years, of Lieut. Commander Wm. Ahern, D. S. C., R. N. (retired) at his residence, Beechmount, Cove. Joining the Royal Navy as a boy he quickly reached commissioned rank and he was in command of the torpedo flotilla at Cork Harbour during the first world war. His boat, O.52 was the first vessel by half an hour to arrive at the scene of the sinking of the Lusitania, and he took aboard a large number of survivors, three of whom died on the way back to the harbour. Later his vessel was credited with the sinking of a German submarine off the Cork coast for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. — Cork Evening Echo 5 February 1946

NAVAL VETERAN. Death of Lieut.-Commander W. Ahern, Cove. The death took place, after a short illness, at his residence Beechmount, Cove, of Lieut. Commander William Ahern, R.N. (retired). Deceased, who was a native of the town, joined the British Navy as a boy, and during his service took part in a number of wars. In the Anglo- Egyptian campaign, of 1882, he participated in the bombardment of Alexandria, and it was a coincidence that on the 60th anniversary of that engagement, his grandson, Lieut. Malcolm English, should be called upon while serving also with the British Navy, to take part in an attack on the same port in 1942; when it was occupied by the Italians. Following some service aboard a training ship in Cork Harbour, deceased was sent to take part in the Boer War, and he was one of the first party of sailors to land in South Africa. Later he saw service aboard the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet. He retired with the rank of Warrant Officer in 1912. During the World War No. 1, deceased was recalled to active service and commanded a flotilla of torpedo boats in Cork Harbour throughout the conflict. He was promoted Lieutenant in 1915, and shortly afterwards was awarded the D.S.C. for service rendered to the destroyer "Marlay" when she grounded off Cork Harbour. He also rendered valuable assistance when the Cunard Liner "Lusitania" was torpedoed off the Old Head of Kinsale. His boat, O.52, was the first vessel by half an hour to arrive at the scene of the sinking of the Lusitania and he took aboard a large number of survivors, three of whom died on the way back to the harbour. Later his vessell was credited with the sinking of a German submarine off the Cork coast. He finally retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Commander at the conclusion of the 1914-1918 war. Rev. Thomas A. Ahearn WILKES-BARRE, Pa., April 21 (AP)—Rev. Thomas A. Ahearn, pastor of the Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrament, died here today in Mercy Hospital after a brief illness, at the age of 65. Father Ahearn was born in Susquehanna, Pa. He was a priest in the Scranton diocese for more than forty years. He was educated at Niagara University, N.Y., and St. Ignatius University, Chicago. He completed his seminary training at Dunwoodie Seminary, Yonkers, N.Y. He leaves a brother, John J. Ellen (Reagan) Ahern Rites for Mrs. Ellen Ahern are conducted Tuesday at St. Mary's Church. Mrs. Ellen Ahern, 88, early resident of Wayne County, pased away Thursday afternoon, June 6, in Wayne after receiving care in a local hospital for two and a half years. The Rosary was recited at Beckenhauer Chapel Monday evening at 8 p.m. Funeral rites were conducted at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev William Kearns officiating. Committal followed in the Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Will collins, Joe Duffy, Harry Denesia, Paul Brocker, Fred Thun and J.J. Ahern. Ellen Reagen was born in London, England, January 1, 1858 and came to Canada with her parents when she was about three years old. Deceased moved to Jackson, NE in the early 80's. She was married to John Ahern at Elk Point, South Dakota in 1882 and the couple lived five years in Dakota County. In the spring of 1888 they came to Wayne County and the deceased had been at Carroll and Wayne since, with the exception of two years spent with a son in Cheyenne County. Mr. Ahern died August 6, 1908 and a son, Cornelius, died in April 1910. Deceased leaves seven sons and daughters, Maurice of Carroll, Robert of Sterling, CO, Will of Hamilton, MT, John of Madelia, MN, Kate, now Mrs. Chelsea Thompson of Sioux City, Mary, now Mrs. Matt Finn of Norfolk and James of Van Nuys, CA. All but the last three were able to be here for the funeral. A number of grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Ahern leaves one sister, Mrs. Kate Liston of Marshalltown, IA. Among those who came from a distance for the rites were John Ahern of Madelia, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ahern and Will Ahern of Montana, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Finn of Creighto, Matt Finn and sons John and Richard of Norfolk, Robert Ahern of Sterling and James Thomas of Sioux City. — source unknown June 1946

Large Number At Funeral Of Detective The funeral yesterday of Detective V. D. Ahearn, who was shot by a gunman on Sunday, was one of the largest seen in North Sydney. Christ Church, Lavender Bay, was crowded for a memorial service. About 300 members of the police force remained in the street, and many other sympathisers were unable to get into the church. Detective-Constable Alexander Bowie, who was injured in the police car in which Detective Ahearn was shot, was among the mourners. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Frank Cash. Archbishop Mowll, who gave the address at the service, said he hoped it would be some comfort to Mrs. Ahearn that so large and representative a gathering had come together to do honour to her husband, who in the course of his duty had suddenly been killed. INCREASING DEBT "Others are here," said Archbishop Mowll, "to show regard for the police force, to whom the community owes an increasing debt of gratitude. "The episode of last Sunday afternoon brings home to everyone the risk continually being run by members of the force. We are grateful to them for what they are doing to protect us." Boy Scouts of the 1st Lavender Bay Troop, of which Max Ahearn, son of the detective, is a member, occupied the choir seats at the service. The coffin was carried from the church after the service by Detectives Whiteman, Fagan. Griffin, Kelly, and Tupper, who had worked with Detective Ahearn. A detachment of about 300 uniformed and plainclothes men preceded the hearse. These were followed by a company of' military police in the charge of Captain Wiseman, and by members of the New South Wales Fire Brigade under Inspector J. Neville, who also represented the Chief Officer and the Board of Fire Commissioners. CITIZENS LINE ROUTE The funeral proceeded through the city to Rookwood Cemetery. The cortege as it left the church was preceded by motor cyclists, a detachment of mounted police, and the police band. Along Lavender Street, Blues Point Road, and Blue Street to Bradfield Highway the route was lined by hundreds of spectators. Ordinary traffic along the route to the Bridge was held up for about half an hour. There were about 100 motor cars following the hearse. The chief mourners were Mrs. Ahearn, widow, Max Ahearn, son; Mr. P. Ahearn, father; Mrs. R. Moon, and Mrs. A. Clarke, sisters, Messrs. Moon and Clarke, brothers-in-law; and Mr. and Mrs. H. Mallard, father-in-law and mother-in-law. Officers and members of Masonic Lodge Tuscan also attended. Superintendent J. F. Scott represented the Chief Commissioner, Mr. Mackay. Other police officers present included Superintendent B. E. Sadler, who was in charge of the police arrangements; Superintendents F. Matthews, T. Wickham, and N. D. James, of the C.I.B.; Superintendent W. E. Sherringham, Inspectors M. Cahill, W. L. Alford, C. Kennedy, and J. Nealon; ex-Superintendent W. James T. O'Hearn    LOWELL—A practicing lawyer in this city for almost a half century, James T. O'Hearn died late Saturday night at the Delaney private hospital after a long illness. Mr. O'Hearn, widely known throughout the city, had been ill for the past six years.    A native of this city, he was the son of the late John and Ellen (Crowley) O'Hearn. He graduated from St. Patrick's high school for boys and studied law in the office of his uncle, the late Hon. Jeremiah Crowley, a former mayor. He was admitted to the bar in 1896, along with two other widely known Lowell lawyers who recently passed away, the late James J. Kerwin and the late J. Joseph Hennessy.    Mr. O'Hearn served as a member of the board of aldermen before the turn of the century but later eschewed political life to devote himself to his law practice.    Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Annie (Coughlin) O'Hearn; one daughter, Mrs. Helen E. Joy of this city, four sons, Atty James D. O'Hearn, Walter J. O'Hearn, Francis T. O'Hearn and John P. O'Hearn, all of Lowell; one brother John D. Ahern was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. John's hospital.    LOWELL — A 50-year-old Watertown man was instantly killed about 4.50 o'clock yesterday afternoon when he was struck by a huge tank truck on Merrimack street near Central street.    The victim, Andrew L. Ahern, of 26 Chauncey street, Watertown, was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. John's hospital where he was taken in the police department ambulance manned by Officer John McNiff and Chauffeur John Brodley. It was reported that he was employed in Billerica.    Operator of the vehicle, a fully loaded 15-ton tank truck owned by the Consolidated Rendering company of North Billerica, was David Valorose, 33, or [sic] 19 Apple street. Valorose stated that he did not see Ahern and was not aware of the tragedy until he heard a thump at the rear of his truck and heard screams.    Hospital officials reported that Ahern sustained numerous internal injuries including several broken ribs. He also suffered fractures of both legs and an ankle injury, it was reported. Probe Accident    Inspector Warren A. MacDonnell of the registry of motor vehicles and Officer Bernard Gilbo investigated the accident. Valorose told them that he was stopped at the intersection and upon receiving a “Go” signal from Officer Gilbo, made a right turn onto Merrimack street, when he felt the thump and heard the screams. He applied the brakes immediately to the slow-moving vehicle but apparently, the dual wheels on the truck passed over Ahern before it could be brought to a halt.    Although the streets in the area were jammed with pedestrians taking advantage of the excellent weather, authorities were unable to immediately procure the names of any witnesses to the tragedy. They are continuing their search for someone who could provide more information on the accident and asked the public's co-operation on the matter in an effort to bring about an accurate conclusion to their probe.    Ahern is survived by two sisters, Margaret T. Rev. Lawrence J. Ahern Cleveland Priest, 49, Known for His Aid to 'Down and Out' CLEVELAND, April 18 — The Rev. Lawrence J. Ahern, known to thousands of Cleveland residents of all denominations for his work on behalf of men and women who were "down and out," died here last night at the age of 49. He was ordained a priest twenty-two years ago. His last years were devoted to restoring and rehabiltating hundreds of men and women who had fallen from their places in society. Father Ahern had served as assistant pastor of churches in Barberton, East Cleveland and Dungannon, Ohio, and as chaplain of the convent of the Holy Ghost Sisters here before going on sick leave in 1941. After his return to duty, he was named assistant pastor of Ascension Church. — New York Times 19 April 1947

George Edward Ahern George Edward Ahern of 104 Medford street, for many years town engineer and superintendent of public works, passed away last Saturday night in his summer home in Rockport, at the age of 74. Born in Arlington, he had lived here all his life. In 1898, he was graduated from Tufts College and entered the employ of the town shortly afterward. Until his retirement eight years ago, he was connected with the engineering department a total of nearly 40 years. He was a former president of St. Agnes' Holy Name Society, and was also a member of the Arlington Rotary Club, Arlington Lodge of Elks and Arlington Council, Knights of Columbus. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Frederick J. Marchant, and two grandchildren, Frederick J. Marchant, Jr., and Miss Helen [sic] M. Marchant, all of Arlington. Edmond F. Ahern E. F. AHERN DIES Former Contractor Spanish-American War Veteran Had Served On Board of Welfare Edmond F. Ahern of 1 Webster Street, retired president of Welch and Company, general contractor, and former welfare commissioner died at his home Thursday night. He was 73. Mr. Ahern was stricken while shoveling snow at his home. He was born in Hartford October 3, 1874, a son of the late Daniel E. and Susan Howard Ahern. He had lived in this city all his life. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He first entered the general construction business with his father and later was president of the Ahern and Welch Company. During his 40 years in the field he supervised the construction of many local schools and public buildings. Among the schools his firm constructed are Alfred E. Burr School, Washington Street School, Moylan School and St. Augustine's Parochial School. He also was in charge of building the Hartford Public Market, Pope Park recreational building and St. Augustine's Rectory. When St. Augustine's Church was enlarged at the beginning of the 1930's his firm was called on to take down the side walls of the church and reconstruct them several feet away. This feat was done without interrupting the regular church services and without the loss of a single stone. Mr. Ahern was chairman of the board of trustees of Hartford Lodge No.19, BPOE, of which he has been a member since 1900. He was a trustee of St. Augustine's Church, a memeber of the Knights of Columbus, the Eight Ball Club, Holy Name Society of St. Augustine's Church, past captain of Charles L. Burdette Camp, USWV, a member of St. Augustine's Post, Catholic War Veterans. During the Spanish American War he served with Company K, First Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He is a former member of Company B, First Regiment, Connecticut National Guard. He was a familiar fixture to members of the Elks and was in charge of repairs and building improvements to its clubhouse on Prospect Street for many years. He was a member of the commitee which started the annual Children's Party, sponsored by the Elks, Shriners and Knights of Columbus members 26 years ago and had attended each party. He was elected to serve on the Welfare Board in 1945, going out of office with the last board when the City Manager form of government was put into effect in January. Because of the esteem in which Mr. Ahern was held by members of the Elks the annual St. Patrick's Day Dance and Eight Ball Club Minstrel Show scheduled to be held at the clubhouse tonight has been postponed until March 20. Mr. Ahern leaves two daughters, Miss Katherine Ahern, and Mrs. Raymond G. Brown of Danvers, Mass; four sons, Daniel Ahern, Francis Ahern and David Ahern all of Hartford, and Howard Ahern of New Britain; four sisters, Miss Ellen Ahern, Miss Agnes Ahern, Mrs. Frank Perry and Mrs. Benjamin Caulfield, all of Hartford; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Ahern Funeral Home, 180 Farmington Avenue. Monday at 9:15 am followed by a solemn requiem mass at St. Augustine's Church at 10 o'clock. Burial will be in Mt. Rev. Hohn Hannon, Rev. Stephen Grimvalsky, Rev. Edwin Eagan, MS., and Rev. Phillip Coholan, were present in the sanctuary. Music was furnished by the St. Augustine quartet. Father Mulcahy conducted the burial service. Bearers were Raymond Kilty, James Kilty and John Kilty, James Perry, Edward Daly and Edward Dennehy. Delegates from the Holy Name Society and Catholic War Veterans Post, No. 957 both of St.Austine's Church; the Knights of Columbus, Hartford Lodge of Elks, Hartford Eight Ball Club, members of the former Welfare Board and United Spanish War Veterans attended.

Jean (Gill) Ahern Mrs. Jean Gill Ahern, 89, widow of Lieut. Col. George P. (Patsy) Ahern, secretary of the Army War College here during World War I, died yesterday at her home, 2227 20th st. nw. Mrs. Ahern was a native of Chester, S. C. During her early married life she lived at Army posts in the West during the Indian wars of the 1880s. Her husband, who died in 1941, served as secretary to Sitting Bull, the famed Sioux chief, during the chief's internment subsequent to the Sioux defeat. Her husband also was a Spanish-American War hero and pioneer forester, who established the first college course in forestry in the United States at Montana Agriculture College. Mrs Ahern is survived by three nephews, William G. Gill of Washington, Wilbur D. Gill of New Albany, Ind., and Col. Robert F. Gill of Alexandria; and two nieces, Mrs. Edward Lloyd of Washington and Mrs. Nicholas Webster of Manassas, Va. — Washington Post 15 November 1948

Thomas J. Ahearn    LOWELL.—Efforts to save the life of a two-month-old Manchester street baby proved unavailing yesterday morning after the child had smothered in a [sic] upstairs crib of his home.    The baby victim, Thomas J. Ahearn, was pronounced dead on arrival at St. John's hospital shortly after 11 a.m. Medical Examiner Marshall L. Alling attributed death as accidental. Parents of the child are Mr. and Mrs. John Ahearn, 136 Manchester street.    According to a report from Inspector William P. Nelson who investigated for police Barbara E. Ahearn, 22, mother of the child, stated she had placed the baby in a basket and had given him a bottle of milk at 8 a. m. On returning to the bedroom, she said, she found the baby lying on his face, apparently lifeless. She immediately called a doctor and was told to take the child to the hospital.    Dominic Vernile, 62 Saunders street, No. Andover, visiting in the home at the time, rushed the child to the hospital. He then notified Capt. William F. Murphy at the police station.    Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Barbara; a brother, John P. Ahearn; his paternal grandparents, George and Mary Ahearn; and his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Marietta Duff.    Funeral took place today from the McDonough funeral home. Burial took place in St. Patrick's cemetery where the committal prayers were read by Rev. James W. Finigan, OMI. Arrangements were in charge of Funeral Directors M. H. Ahern, 82, of 8950 Blackstone av., who died Saturday in Mercy hospital, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the chapel at 7651 Jeffery av. to St. Ailbe's church, 9150 Harper av. Ella Louise (Ahern) Goldsworthy Mrs. Ella Louise Goldsworthy, nee Ahern, of 290 Sweeney St. died suddenly late yesterday afternoon at her home. She was born in Westernport, Md., and had resided in North Tonawanda the past nine years. She is survived by her husband, Roy; two sons, David Lee and Herbert Eugene, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Martin of Westernport and Mrs. Mary VanPelt of Cumberland, Md., and three brothers, Raymond, Robert and William Ahern of Westernport. Funeral services will be held in the Hamp Funeral Home, 37 Adam St. Thursday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Joseph C. Shipman will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery. — Tonawanda News 7 June 1949

Mother Mary Ahern Fordham University reported last night the death of Mother Mary Ahern, a religious of the Order of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, at the age of 65. She died yesterday at the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood, near Albany, N. Y., afer a long illness. Mother Ahern received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham in 1921, a Master's in 1922 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1924. — New York Times 15 June 1949

John J. O'Hearn    John J. O'Hearn, retired printer, of 15 Emerald st., Medford, formerly of Medford and Julia sts., this city, passed away yesterday forenoon at the Ring nursing home, Medford, following an illness of several years duration. He was in his 76th year.    The deceased was a member of St. Monica's court of Foresters, Lawrence, where he resided for some years after coming to this country from his native County Cork, Ireland, and of the printers' union. For many years prior to his retirement he was employed at the Middlesex Bleachery in Somerville, and earlier at the Glenwood Works of Medford.    He was the son of the late John and Mary (Casey) O'Hearn, and had made his home in Medford nearly 30 years, residing on Fellsview ave. before moving to Emerald st. His wife, Mrs. Margaret (Wilson) O'Hearn, died 24 years ago.    Surviving are a son, Joseph J. O'Hearn, 23 Cherry st., Medford; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Mary) Forestiere, 15 Emerald st., Medford, whose father-in-law, Fedele Forestiere, died July 3rd, and Mrs. Walter (Ruth) Dubzinski of Gardner; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Burke of Lawrence.    The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 8:15 from the Breslin funeral home, with a solemn high mass of requiem following at nine in Immaculate Conception church. Josephine G. O'Hearn    Miss Josephine G. O'Hearn, a lifelong resident of St. Patrick's parish, died early this morning at her home, 31 Marsh street, after a short illness. Born and educated in Lowell, the daughter of the late Bartholomew and the late Mary (Lyons) O'Hearn, she was well known throughout the community. She was an attendant of St. Patrick's church.    Miss O'Hearn is survived by a sister, Mrs. Nellie T. Keefe, and several cousins. — The Lowell Sun 10 August 1949

Rachel Ahern A week ago a seven-month-old baby was smothered to death near Cloudersport. The little child was Rachel Ahern, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ahern. Put to bed at 7 o'clock the child was discovered about half an hour later by the mother. Rachel had tumbled off the bed, feet first. Her face was pressed against the side of the mattress making it impossible for her to cry out. — McKean County Democrat 11 August 1949

George Ahern George Ahern, 88, resident of Winona until eight years ago when he moved to Rollingstone to reside with his daughter, Mrs. J. M. Kohner, died at 8:30 a.m. today at the Winona General hospital where he had been a patient since June 28. Death was due to the infirmities of age. Mr. Ahern was born in Winona March 30, 1861. Survivors are his wife who is ill in a Rochester hospital; two daughters, Mrs. Kohner, Rollingstone, and Mrs. Samuel Schaefer, Winona, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Van Alstine, Winona. Funeral services will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at Holy Trinity church, Rollingstone, the Rev. S. N. Majerus officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Winona. Margaret (O'Hearn) Swan Mrs. Margaret Swan, 75, life-long [sic] resident of Cascade and widow of Ulysses Swan, passed away at 8:30 a.m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arno Bartel, route 1, Sheboygan, after a three week's illness. She was born on Sept. 29, 1873, in the town of Mitchell, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. O'Hearn. She was married to Ulysses Swan on Nov. 25, 1897, at St. Mary's church in Cascade. Mr. Swan died April 7, 1942. During the past seven years, prior to her recent illness, she made her home with a daughter, Mrs. Chester McMullen in Cascade. She was a member of the Altar society of St. Mary's church. The survivors include one son, Robert of Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Reuben (Ella) Wals [sic] of Los Angeles, Mrs. Chester (Mae) McMullen of Cascade and Mrs. Arno (Isabella) Bartel, town of Sheboygan; five grandchildren. One sister preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday at the Gentine Funeral home in Plymouth and at 10 o'clock at St. Mary's Ctholic church in Cascade. The Rev. C. J. Schouten, pastor of the church, will officiate and burial will be made in the parish cemetery. Members of the Altar society will hold a vigil at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. REV. FR. AHERN CALLED BY DEATH Many Attend Last Rites For Beloved Priest ELK, Oct. 13—The sudden death of the Rev. Father [Donatus] Ahern, who was found dead in the Parish of this place Saturday afternoon, was a distinct shock to the entire coast. He was found by two ladies from up the coast who came to Greenwood to call on him. They found the door open and upon entering found Father Ahern, fully clothed, lying on his bed, dead. He came here three months ago to take the place of Father Leopold O'Riordan who went to Ireland for a vacation. It was known that Father Ahern was not well, but it was not realized he was so ill. Twelve years ago, he came here and filled this parish for six years, after which he was transferred to Willits. Fr. Ahern was a native of County Cork, Ireland, and was 52 years of age. Prior to becoming a priest, he had received a degree in civil engineering at the National University of Ireland. He was for many years a Missionary and was a member of St. Patrick's Capuchin Monastery of Willington [sic], Delaware. He is survived by several brothers and sisters in Ireland. A Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated in the church here Wednesday morning, which was beautiful, and many priests were in attendance. The music for the Mass was furnished by the Dominican Sisters from the Albertinum, Ukiah, and interment was in the plot of the Capuchin Fathers in the Ukiah cemetery. — Mendocino Beacon 15 October 1949

Bertram J. Ahearn Bertram J. Ahearn of 158 Burns Street, Forest Hills, Queens, a civil engineer employed by the City of New York, died yesterday afternoon in the office of the Board of Transportation, 250 Hudson Street, of a heart attack. Born in Boston, he entered the employ of the Metropolitan Park Commission in this city in 1905. Two years later he joined the Board of Water Supply as a rodman. He was made assistant engineer in 1925, and joined the Board of Transportation the following year. Mr. Ahearn leaves his wife, the former Grace Gibson; a son, Bert G. JOHN F. AHERN DIES; LIVED HERE SUMMERS Was Former Division Manager of Waldorf Restaurant Chain In Providence John F. Ahern, former divisional manager of the Waldorf Restaurant System in Providence, who has spent summer seasons here with his family for years, died Thursday at his Providence home at the age of 60. He was the owner of one of the Cliff View Cottages on Purgatory road, Middletown. His wife is the former Miss Irene A. Lynch of this city. He also leaves four [sic] sons, John F., Jr., Austin, Tx., and Walter G. Ahern of Providence, and Howard B. Ahern of Buffalo, N. Y.; a daughter, Mrs. James C. Collon of Philadelphia; a sister, Miss Mary I. Ahern; and three grandchildren. He has been associated with the Waldorf system for more than 30 years, prior to his retirement in 1943. He was a member of Cranston Council, Knights of Columbus, and the Providence Lodge of Elks. Funeral services will be held Monday morning in Providence. — Newport Daily News 19 November 1949
