Claudette Elizabeth (Malburg) [O'Hearn] Reither
March 10, 1933 — January 23, 2009
Our beloved mother, sister and friend passed away peacefully on January 23, 2009. Claudette Elizabeth Malburg was born in Chicago, IL, to Bernard J. and Lucille M. Malburg. Claudette married John C. O'Hearn on May 8th, 1954, and moved to Minnesota where they had seven children. Upon her divorce, she relocated to Colorado in 1965 where she raised her children with the help of her family. Living in Denver, Craig and Grand Junction, she worked a variety of different jobs both in the private and public sectors. It is during these times that she made many friends and was well respected for being a single mother raising seven children. In 1994 she married Thomas D. Reither and welcomed being a homemaker. She enjoyed travel, skiing, professional sports especially the Bronco's and the Avalanche, gardening, music, animals, holidays and most of all having her children around her.

Claudette was a loving mother who raised seven children with love, understanding and compassion. She was the rock we all relied on for comfort and counseling, home and health, food and fun, parenting and protection. Our mother endured considerable hardship in order to provide her children with life's essentials. She did this through personal sacrifice and without complaint. She leaves us filled with love for her and for each other. We have fond memories of growing up and of her many quips — our favorite being her shouting, "Judas priest". Only to have us all yell, "Judas wasn't a priest!". We will always remember her hearty laughter and warm, bright smile.

Claudette is survived by her husband, Thomas D. Reither; her seven children, Patrick C. O'Hearn (Shirlee), Michael J. O'Hearn (Letha), Kathleen M. Buniger (John), Margaret M. O'Hearn, Maureen Kelly Bamford (Rick), Jeanne M. Maneotis (John) and John C. O'Hearn (Birgit); her three brothers, Bernard J. Malburg of Palisade, CO; Lawrence E. Malburg of Fort Collins, CO, and Jerome I. Malburg of Barrington, IL; her sister, Ayleen Van Beynen of Marquette, MI; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Marie L. Lafeber.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 31, at 10:00 a.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, 2515 F Road, Grand Junction, CO. Visitation one hour preceding service. Please join the family for coffee and fellowship immediately following the service at the Church of Christ, 2893 F Road, Grand Junction, CO 81504. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Roice-Hurst Humane Society, 3320 D 1/2 RD, Clifton, CO 81520 or Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, PO Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506.

Tributes for couple
Just over two weeks after they died on Black Saturday trying to defend their property, Leigh and Charmian Ahern have been honoured by about 700 of their friends in a memorial service at Yarra Valley Grammar School. Charmian, known as Charm, 58, and Leigh, 57, died when their house at Steels Creek was lost in the Kinglake fire. In a tribute provided to The Age by friend Denis Muller, the Aherns were described as lovers of the environment, and appreciative of the risk of living in the bush.

"They had always said they would stay and fight. When the hour was upon them, that is what they did," he said. Yesterday, their son Dale and daughter Chloe, sang their parents' wedding day song at the service, while accompanying a video of the wedding. Mr Muller said Leigh Ahern had worked as an environmental scientist all his life, most recently as a consulting scientist specialising in biodiversity. Charmian Ahern had a PhD in botany and worked daily at Biralee Primary School as an aide to special needs children.

At the service, fellow scientists described their experiences of field trips with Leigh Ahern, and a large number of people from the primary school attended.

Daniel J. O'Hern, Longtime New Jersey Supreme Court Justice, Dies at 78
by Douglas Martin
Daniel J. O'Hern, a longtime associate justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court whose 231 majority opinions helped define state policies on issues like the death penalty, law enforcement and homelessness, died Wednesday at his home in Little Silver, N.J. He was 78. The cause was metastatic melanoma of the brain, his family said.

Justice O'Hern, who was on the court from 1981 to 2000, served under Chief Justice Robert N. Wilentz for 14 years. Legal experts in and out of New Jersey commended, and criticized, the Wilentz court for its outpouring of influential, often liberal rulings. Prof. Laurence H. Tribe of Harvard Law School once called it the best state supreme court in the nation. Justice O'Hern was not a predictable vote on the seven-member court, the state's highest, sometimes taking positions favored by conservatives on issues like the death penalty. In 2000, he wrote an opinion upholding a death sentence in a case where a convicted murderer claimed jurors had been biased in favor of the penalty because of the manner in which they were chosen. Other opinions were more liberal, including those accompanying several unanimous decisions by the court upholding the state's obligation to house the homeless.

In 1983, Justice O'Hern wrote a decision, criticized by President Ronald Reagan, that limited the right of school officials to search students' belongings. Even though evidence of drug dealing was ultimately found in the purse of a student at Piscataway High School, the court ruled, 5 to 2, that the search of the purse had been illegal. "Surely, law enforcement would be easier without the Constitution," Justice O'Hern wrote in that decision, "but that is not the way that the framers chose." The United States Supreme Court later reversed the New Jersey decision.

Daniel Joseph O'Hern was born in Red Bank, N.J., on May 23, 1930, and commuted to Regis High School in Manhattan. He graduated from Fordham College in 1951 with a degree in mathematics. He served in the Navy from 1951 to 1954. During the Korean War, he was on the aircraft carrier Essex. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1957, then was a clerk for Justice William J. Brennan Jr. of the United States Supreme Court. He practiced law and was a councilman and mayor of Red Bank. Gov. Brendan T. Byrne of New Jersey appointed Mr. O'Hern commissioner of the state's Environmental Protection Department in 1978, and a year later made him his own chief counsel. In 1981, Mr. Byrne named him to the Supreme Court, making him the third of the governor's chief counsels to be appointed to it.

Justice O'Hern is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Barbara Ronan; his sons, Daniel Jr., James and John; his daughters, Eileen O'Hern Luby and Molly O'Hern Wallace; his sisters, Eugenia Witterschein and Catharine O'Hern; his brother, Dr. J. Henry O'Hern Jr.; and eight grandchildren.

Justice O'Hern liked to apply what he called the "Sal's Tavern" test to judicial opinions: If it would not make sense to the gang at Sal's, he said, it should be done over.

Daniel E. Ahern
May 28, 2009 Daniel E. Ahern, 62, who retired from his position as Internet content coordinator with the Internal Revenue Service in 2009, after 30 years with the federal government, died of cancer on May 28 at Hospice Atlanta. Dan was senior analyst of communications staff responsible for all content postings on irs.gov and was passionate about assuring high quality, easy-to-navigate information services for Web site users. He traveled frequently to Washington, DC, and around the country to conduct training seminars for IRS employees.

Dan was born in Syracuse, New York, on August 15, 1946, the youngest of seven children, to the late John and Doris Ahern, and was devoted to his large family throughout his life. He received a master's degree in business administration from Western New Mexico University in 1971 after completing his undergraduate work at Bryant College in Rhode Island. A longtime resident of Atlanta, Dan was the founding president of Southern Country Atlanta in 1988 and later the first president of SEGRA, two organizations that helped develop interest in country-western music, dance, and rodeo in our community. He organized a group of men to learn clogging. They became "The Buffalo Chips" and performed at the World's Fair in Knoxville in 1982. He loved the movies, all kinds of music, tending his roses and indoor plants, and his "rescue cat," Dixie. He enjoyed planning vacation trips for himself, his partner and their friends. Among the highlights were Rio de Janeiro, Costa Rica, New York City, London, Ireland and a friend's wedding in Nassau. Simple pleasures like rollerblading in Piedmont Park, aerobics at the Decatur YMCA and dinners somewhere near home or at home with friends were an important part of his life. He learned inclusiveness at an early age thanks to his loving family, and this lesson carried over into his worklife, as he took newcomers under his wing when they came into his department. His judgment was sound and fair. Once, when he was offered a promotion, he turned it down, in part because, as he told the interviewers, someone else they had interviewed would be better for the job.

His smile and his enthusiasm were contagious. Focus on the positive and ignore the negative was a guiding principle for him. He believed that life was a great journey and wanted to go first class whenever possible, with people he cared about along for the ride.

He is survived by John Lyons, his partner of 35 years. Other survivors include his brothers and sister, Timothy Ahern and his wife, Kate, Reverend John Ahern, Doreen Drury and her husband John, and Patrick Ahern and his wife Carol; along with 21 nieces and nephews, 46 great-nieces and -nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas M. Ahern, and sister, Mary T. Lynch. Dan's remains have been cremated, and a funeral Mass will be celebrated by his brother, Fr. John Ahern, at Holy Cross Church, 4112 E. Genesee Street, Dewitt, NY 13214 on Friday, June 5, at 11 a.m. Calling hours are at the church on Thursday, June 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. Whelan Bros. & Hulchanski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. An Atlanta memorial service at H. M. Patterson & Son-Spring Hill Chapel will be announced later for friends and former co-workers. John F. "Jack" Ahern
John F. (Jack) Ahern of Troy and Bolton Landing died peacefully August 9, 2009 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany. He fought for years against the frontal temporal dementia that eventually claimed most of his physical and mental abilities. Jake retired from the General Electric Company, where he was a patent counsel in the large steam turbine-generator operations. He was the husband of Mary A. Marcincin Ahern, who predeceased him in 1991.

Jack was born on the east side of Troy on August 16, 1923, to the late Andrew G. Ahern and Matilda B. Pistor Ahern, and spent his early years in Troy before moving with his family to Philadelphia. He graduated from North Catholic High School in Philadelphia and joined the Army-Air Force in 1942, serving for three years in the Pacific Theatre. After the war ended, he attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, graduating in 1949. In Bethlehem, he met Mary Marcincin, the love of his life. They married in 1950 and soon thereafter moved to Washington, D.C., where Jack attended George Washington University Law School while they both worked on Capitol Hill. After graduation from law school in 1953, Jack secured admission to the patent bar and then moved to Schenectady where he resumed his career at General Electric, first working at the research lab in Niskayuna and eventually transferring downtown to the main plant.

After the birth of their daughter Barbara, they moved to the town of Charlton in Saratoga County where Jack became involved in Republican politics, a lifetime avocation. In 1961 he was elected supervisor of Charlton; he went to hold positions in the Charlton and Saratoga County Republican committees. In 1971 he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the new Capital District Transportation Authority by Governor Rockefeller, where he served for ten years. In addition to his work and his involvement in politics, Jack built a summer home in Bolton Landing on Lake George, the lake he loved, where the family spent every summer. In 1982 Jack retired from General Electric and soon thereafter he and Mary moved to Siesta Key in Sarasota, Fla. where they spent most of the year and where Jack became a member of the Gulf Gate Rotary Club, becoming a Paul Harris Fellow. In the years before his death, Jack lived with his daughter Barbara and her husband Conrad in Brunswick. Jacks family extends thanks to our good friend Jeanne Dodge, and the staff and volunteers of Albany Community Hospice, all of whom brought light into Jacks final months.

Survivors: Daughter, Barbara Ahern and her husband Conrad Holton; sisters-in-law Margaret Korpics, Catherine Cassano and Helen Marcincin, all of Bethlehem and Ann Marcincin of Tamaqua; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Mary, he was also predeceased by his brother Andrew G Ahern Jr., and his wife Rita Haley Ahern of Wilmington, Del. Dr. Carol (Ahern) Williams
COLUMBIA—Dr. Carol Ahern Williams, 76, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2009, in her home in Columbia after her courageous 20-year battle with cancer. Against all odds, Dr. Williams survived a diagnosis of terminal lung cancer twenty years ago. After a valiant struggle, she was eventually able to regain her health, enjoy her previous quality of life, and resume her contributions at USC and to society. As a nursing educator, Dr. Williams appreciated the real-life lesson her recovery provided to patients and their families. She attributed much of her improvement to an awareness of the mind-body connection. She internalized and visualized her absolute expectation of a positive outcome as she underwent various medical procedures. Last year, Dr. Williams once again offered inspiration as she managed to bounce back to health after suffering a significant stroke. The healing capacity her body and mind demonstrated by recovering from illness after illness surprised all who knew her and is indicative of what the human spirit is truly capable of achieving. She recognized the importance of sharing the story of her triumph over terminal cancer, as her own miraculous recovery offers hope to others facing a serious prognosis. Dr. Williams lived a full and productive life for two decades following her initial diagnosis, before finally succumbing when it recurred.

She was born June 21, 1933, in Providence, RI; the daughter of the late Sally Anna Carmichael Ahern and Allan Archibald Ahern. She was raised in Newport, RI, Panama Canal Zone, Venice, FL, Newfoundland, Westover Field, MA, among others, as the family followed the Army and Air Force assignments of her father who retired as chief warrant officer. After graduation from Springfield, MA, Hospital School of Nursing in 1954, Dr. Williams worked as a staff and charge nurse in hospitals in Florida and Massachusetts while earning a BSN degree in nursing from Boston University in 1960. She continued nursing as a teacher and staff nurse in North Carolina and California before moving to Columbia in 1965 where she began her career in psychiatric nursing at SC State Hospital. Dr. Williams's affiliation with the University of South Carolina College of Nursing started in 1968 where she worked as a teaching assistant while earning an MN degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Florida in 1971, later being promoted to instructor and assistant professor. After earning a DSN degree in Community Mental Health Nursing at the University of Alabama in 1982, she was promoted to Associate Professor, and upon retirement in 1999, she was awarded the title of Professor Emerita. Her other educational credentials included postgraduate education in Family Systems Psychotherapy and national board certification as a Clinical Specialist in Adult Psychiatric Nursing.

Dr. Williams was a Certified Grant Writer, a skill she used successfully to obtain grant funds, including support for her research on 'Empathy and Defensive Style' from the Division of Nursing and the National Center for Nursing Research and for nursing education in the College of Nursing, 'Advanced Practice Mental Health Nursing' from the Division of Nursing, US Public Health Service. At USC she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in psychiatric mental health nursing and taught and supervised masters and doctoral student research. She has an extensive record of service to USC, serving on multiple college and university committees during her over 30 years as a faculty member. She made enumerable nursing research and practice presentations at professional meetings around the world and published extensively in prestigious professional journals. She is well-known in South Carolina and nationally for her leadership in professional nursing organizations, especially related to psychiatric mental health nursing and as co-author of the 2006 book, Legacy of Caring: A History of Nursing at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing (SC History Award winner). She was a member of the South Carolina and the American Nurses Association, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, International Society for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, Southern Nursing Research Society, and Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurses of Columbia.

Carol was not one to rest on past laurels. Following her retirement, she embarked on a major new and challenging research project. Her interests in health care and sampling skills meshed with a colleague's interests in economic development and rural poverty. Lee County was chosen as the laboratory for this research for the next several years and was visited on average twice a week. During these years she participated in lengthy one on one interviews with over a hundred Lee residents representing all facets of society. Her initial entry to the county coincided with a major local effort to reinvigorate the economy and to deal objectively with the legacy of racial issues from the Ante Bellum past. She was a fixture at County Council meetings, numerous church socials, service institutions, and local eateries and counted numerous residents of the county as friends. At one point she seriously considered moving to Bishopville and purchasing the boyhood home of West Point football great, Felix "Doc" Blanchard. Dr Williams was an objective observer and while not the first to coin the phrase, gave new meaning to "Shadows in the Sunbelt." These are best described as predominately black rural counties with weak employment opportunities, almost all black public schools and almost all white private schools, declining opportunities for youth interracial activities, and the out-migration of the best and brightest from both racial groups.

Dr. Williams became an astute observer of educational issues and participated in interviewing members of the school board, school superintendents, and concerned parents and gained their trust for her objectivity. She was privy to memorable school board elections, visited every school in the county and at one point was prepared to offer a short course at the high school. Lee County had become a second home to this patient investigator and she was on a first name basis with numerous residents — be they social activists, political leaders, members of the clergy or poorly educated parents seeking better opportunity for their children.

She joined a newly formed Bishopville Kiwanis Club, eventually serving as club secretary. Carol Williams understood concerns within and between both racial communities. She documented the existence of numerous school children whose parents rejected both public and private education opting instead for home schooling networks, a charter school and schools in adjacent counties. When not in Lee County, she involved herself in an autobiographical writing class organized by Palmetto Health Baptist, assisted in training dogs for the handicapped (Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services, "PAALS"), became an active participant in a local computer club and, until two months before her death, exercised at the Capital Senior Center. Internationally, she attended nursing conferences in Korea and Saudi Arabia, and collaborated with public health nurses in a sprawling black township in South Africa. She was a regular participant in Columbia's World Affairs lecture series and USC's Caught in the Creative Act course and seldom missed an opportunity to attend musical performances. Her frail body encompassed a mind never ceasing to find new challenges. It is fair to say that Dr. Carol Williams was a woman for all seasons.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Williams Hammack, and grandsons, Matthew and Rex of Longwood, FL; sister, Elaine Jennings of California; and many friends and professional colleagues. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Allan Ahern. A special thank you is extended to Harmony Hospice and PAALS who were incredible sources of comfort and support.

A Memorial Service is planned for Sunday, August 30, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at Rutledge Chapel on the Historic Horseshoe of the University of South Carolina. Dr. Williams was laid to rest at Ramsey Creek Preserve, Westminster, SC. Memorials may be sent to the College of Nursing (c/o Judy Barr), University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208; International Society of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses Foundation, Dr. Carol A. Williams Scholarship Fund, College of Nursing (c/o Dr. Kathleen Scharer), University of South Carolina; or Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services, P.O. Box 25679, Columbia, SC 29224.

Martin Ahearn's landscapes hang in galleries and offices
across the eastern United States.

By J.M. Lawrence
Cape Ann artist Martin R. Ahearn, whose watercolors captured the drama of Rockport seascapes and scenes of Ireland, often wore a tam o'shanter as he painted. He taught scores of artists the joys of painting watercolors en plein air and led painting tours in his father's native Ireland. "Martin was born an American, but he had the soul of an Irishman,'' said fellow Rockport artist John Terelak, who was Mr. Ahearn's son-in-law.

Mr. Ahearn, who had previously made his living as a commercial artist in Boston, died of pneumonia Sunday at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester. He was 91 and had lived in Rockport for almost 50 years. Born in Somerville, Mr. Ahearn grew up in Arlington and studied commercial art at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston. "His mother wanted him to be a priest,'' said his daughter, Margret "Peggy'' Chick, who owns the Artful Touch Gallery in Rockport, where Mr. Ahearn's paintings are sold. Mr. Ahearn, who contracted polio as a child, had a kind demeanor and always dispensed compliments along with criticism to his students, Chick said. "It could have looked like a kindergartner did it, but he would say how the tones are beautiful, and then he got down to the nitty-gritty,'' Chick said.

Mr. Ahearn spent his early career working in the art department of Corey Snow, a Boston advertising agency. He also worked for The Boston Globe and General Electric. He met his first wife, Mary (McFadden), when he was a teenager in Arlington. He told his children he saw Mary walking down the street in their neighborhood, wearing a royal blue coat with a fox fur collar, and said, "That's the girl I'm going to marry.'' They were married almost 52 years and had three children. She died in 1995.

Mr. Ahearn's commercial art career included drawing men's clothing for a catalog, before photography displaced the work. He had his son, Lawrence, model the clothes, so that he could accurately capture the wrinkles and shadows in the fabric. "I would model winter coats in the summer and summer clothes in the winter,'' said Lawrence, who lives in King of Prussia, Pa.

Mr. Ahearn moved his family to Rockport in 1960 and began focusing on fine art. He studied under such Cape Ann artists as Carl Peters and Emille Gruppe, and his children recalled their parents discussing how to make the $90 monthly mortgage on their home in those days. The beauty of the area could stop him in his tracks. "He would always stop the car immediately when he saw a scene worth painting, regardless of who was behind us or where and when we had to be some place,'' Lawrence said, recalling many late arrivals. Seattle artist David Repyak, who grew up in Gloucester, recalled studying with Mr. Ahearn as a teenager in the 1980s. "He was quite an inspiring man and a very calm soul,'' Repyak said. "He really taught me how to see light when painting outside.''

After the death of his first wife, Mr. Ahearn traveled to Ireland to paint and soothe his grief. In 1999, at the age of 81, he married Bridget Whoriskey of Galway, the widow of his wife's first cousin. His paintings have won numerous prizes and are included in the collections of the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, the Springfield Museums, the Salmagundi Club Center for American Art in New York, AT&T, Ford Motor Co., and Prudential Insurance Co. He was a member and past president of the New England Watercolor Society and the Rockport Art Association.

In addition to his wife, son, and daughter Margret, Mr. Ahearn leaves another daughter, Patricia Terelak of Rockport; four stepdaughters, Mary Nee and Helen Keane of Ireland and Margaret Harkins and Brigid Watt of Scotland; two stepsons, Neil and Patrick Whoriskey of Ireland; his sister, Mary Keating of Arlington; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. today at St. Joachim's Church in Rockport. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery in Rockport.

Presenter Mike Ahern dies at 67
Former Radio Caroline presenter Mike Ahern has died at the age of 67. Mike, who only last week celebrated his birthday, was also well known for his work on Radio 1 and Capital Gold. Most recently, at Easter this year, he was heard on Pirate BBC Essex. A posting on Facebook's Pirate BBC Essex page says: "A few weeks ago, Mike had a lung removed, after being diagnosed with lung cancer. It also transpired that he had a brain tumour as well, which was going to be operated on. Sadly, Mike died before this could happen."

Born in Liverpool, he was a barman and a clerk before getting his big break on Radio Caroline, at first joining the station's North ship off the Isle Of Man. He moved to Caroline's South ship in 1965 to help aid the network's flagging figures. He departed Caroline in 1967 for Radio One, though it was a short lived affair with Ahern departing for Australia to work for a slew of stations there including 4BC and 6PM. He returned to the UK in 1988 and worked for Essex Radio, Piccadilly Radio and Country-1035 among others.

Death of pioneering Norfolk radio DJ
A pioneer of radio with an encyclopaedic musical knowledge, Mike Ahern has died at the age of 67. Known for his natural warmth and empathy whether he was on the big stage of Radio One, Radio Caroline or Capital Radio — or the smaller stage, which included a stint on the Stody Estate with North Norfolk Radio — Mr Ahern was regarded as a truly professional and likable broadcaster. He had lived in Holt for several years and died on October 5 in the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital after battling illness.

The days of the pirate Radio Caroline saw Mr Ahern work on both original ships, north and south, and in 2004 he told the EDP how his career started. Writing to station bosses from his home in Liverpool, explaining he wanted to become a disc jockey, then borrowing the train fare to get to a London audition, he was accepted and his career took off. "None of us had any idea the impact we were having. In fact, we couldn't even begin to imagine it," he said in the 2004 interview to mark the 40th anniversary of Radio Caroline. The Radio One spell was a short one, but as a leading broadcast talent and with a highly respected enthusiasm for the job, Mr Ahern found plenty of work through a long career. Several years in Australia saw him work on a number of stations, as well as having two children, Christopher and Matthew. Mr Ahern had recently become a grandfather. The links with Australia were still strong and recently Mr Ahern had been broadcasting for an Australian radio station as their UK correspondent.

The funeral will be held at St Faiths Crematorium at Horsham St Faith on October 21 at 11am.

James Henry "Jim" Ahern
Jim Ahern had a passion for preservation and San Diego's history. When he pledged to help clean up the Gaslamp Quarter more than 20 years ago, he tackled the mission earnestly. The seedy area of pawnshops, tattoo parlors and strip clubs gave way to trendy bistros, jazz bars and popular restaurants. Mr. Ahern, who became a fixture in downtown San Diego, also helped establish the Chinese/Asian Thematic Historic District.

Mr. Ahern died of heart failure Oct. 15 at his La Jolla home. He was 84. He was a former air-conditioning specialist who became a commercial Realtor and Gaslamp property owner. Through his family business, The Ahern Group, he bought and renovated several buildings in the historic district. "He was one of the first businessmen who really came out in support of (historic) preservation," said Angeles Leira, a former city planner who worked on preservation issues. "He was instrumental in getting the community together to establish the Asian Thematic District and the Chinese Museum at Third Avenue." Friends and colleagues said Mr. Ahern never shied away from a fight and wasn't one to mince words. "He was a natural contrarian," said friend Bill Adams. "But he was a guy who rooted for the underdog, for the small-property owner." Adams said Mr. Ahern welcomed him to the neighborhood when he opened his law office in the Gaslamp Quarter. "He was a very open, friendly guy. Even if he didn't agree with you, you still liked him," he said.

Mr. Ahern didn't believe in redevelopment at the expense of preservation and publicly criticized the Centre City Development Corp. for condoning the demolition of the old T.M. Cobb Building on Fifth Avenue. Mr. Ahern was a former president of the San Diego Board of Realtors, the Gaslamp Association and the La Jolla Tennis Club. A member of the Historical Site Resources Board, he was honored as 1996 preservationist of the year by the Save Our Heritage Organisation. In a 1996 interview with The San Diego Union-Tribune, Mr. Ahern said he considered himself the self-appointed "sidewalk watcher" in the Gaslamp. When the streets got dirty, he called the city to complain, and when new tenants didn't comply with the district's regulations, he would pay them a visit and demand cooperation.

James Henry Ahern was born March 21, 1925, in Avalon, Catalina Island, to Michael and Ethel Ahern. He grew up on Catalina Island and in Long Beach and enlisted in the Army in 1943. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Europe during World War II and received a Purple Heart. He settled in La Jolla in 1960 and quickly made friends. "Everybody liked him," said Scott Farr of the La Jolla Tennis Club. "He was opinionated, but he listened to others, too. He endeared himself to everybody."

Mr. Ahern is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of La Jolla; six children, Fritz, Patrick, Louise Buckley, Jimmy, Kate Rigby and Josephine Rowe; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held yesterday at the Avalon Cemetery on Catalina Island. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, San Diego; or the Catalina Island Museum.

John Ahern
After a long and determined fight against lung cancer, John Ahern died in Hailey, Idaho, on Oct. 11, 2009. His family and friends were at his side throughout this journey. John was a quiet and thoughtful soul who lived his life with an open heart. He was always up for a philosophical discourse and his mind was a rare commodity. This openness allowed him to be receptive to many different cultures, and he lived in Spain, Ireland, Mexico and America. He spoke both English and Spanish fluently, but also his soul spoke with sincere clarity and he was an avid reader of spiritual works—Buddhism, Emerson, Church of Religious Science and many other great thinkers.

John Ahern was born in Abbeyfeale, Ireland, on Sept. 9, 1938, to John and Eileen Ahern. He was the oldest of 10 children. At 17, John left Ireland and worked in England before making his way to the United States. In Chicago, John joined the Air Force and served several tours of duty in Vietnam. He spoke very little of those days. He returned to America, married and had three sons—John, Michael and Liam Ahern. He worked in California for AT&T, and then for Solano County as a budget analyst, and was county administrator. Having taken an early retirement, John moved to Idaho where he married Andrea Rule. John loved hiking, gardening, landscaping, reading, fly fishing, cycling and advancing his spiritual life. His Irish charm was inescapable and he had wonderful friends. His sincere humor, thoughtfulness and warmth touched many.

John is survived by his wife, Andrea Rule; his three sons, Michael, John and Liana Ahern, and their wives, Anne and Kathy; and John's grandchildren, Adriel, Hanna, Erin, Riley Jo and Sean. His brothers and sisters in Ireland, Chicago and England are Billy, Patrick, Jimmy, Gerald, Danny, and sisters Philamena, Mary Theresa Taylor and Elma Toland. All deeply mourn John's passing. A memorial service was held in Boise, Idaho, on Nov. 2, the Day of the Dead. On Saturday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m there will be a wake at John Moreland and Marty Bacher's home, 106 Elderberry Lane, Bellevue. An additional wake is planned for summer 2010. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the lung cancer research department at St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute, 100 E. Idaho St., Boise, ID 83712.

Ahern family mourning after sudden death of
former taoiseach's nephew
A son of Maurice Ahern, the former Fianna Fail councillor, died suddenly yesterday. Dylan Ahern, who canvassed for his father and for his uncle, former taoiseach Bertie Ahern, in election campaigns, was a keen athlete and shared a love of running with his father. They both ran with Clonliffe Harriers athletic club in Dublin.

Family grief as Bertie Ahern's nephew found dead
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's extended family have suffered a second blow in just a month after the death of his nephew. The death over the weekend of Dylan Ahern, son of former Lord Mayor of Dublin Maurice Ahern, came just weeks after Mr Ahern's son-in-law, Westlife pop star Nicky Byrne, lost his father. Dylan (37) was an avid runner, like his father, and was one of six children. He died in his apartment on Dublin's northside on Saturday morning and was found by his flatmate. Maurice Ahern is Bertie Ahern's eldest brother and was the Fianna Fail candidate in this year's Dublin Central by-election.

Condolences were expressed to the family by the well-known Clonliffe Harriers athletics club in Dublin. "It is with profound shock that we learned of the tragic loss of a member of the Clonliffe family, Dylan Ahern, who died suddenly this morning. Our prayers and thoughts are with Maurice and his family at this very sad time," the club said. As a mark of respect, the club cancelled a prize-giving dinner and deferred its AGM, due to be held tomorrow night.

The Dublin Fire Brigade Ambulance arrived at the apartment in Northwood, Santry, at 1pm and his body was brought to Blanchardstown Hospital. A post mortem will take place today. Gardai are not investigating the death. The removal is expected to take place tomorrow with the funeral on Wednesday.

Dylan grew up in the family home in Malahide and worked for Dublin City Council. Neither the former Taoiseach, nor the Ahern family, will be making a statement on the death. Last month there had been celebration for Maurice Ahern when his daughter Aimee married at St Nicholas of Myra Church in Kinsealy, Co Dublin. Earlier this month, Nicky Byrne Snr, the father-in-law of Bertie Ahern's daughter Georgina, died of a heart attack at 60 years of age.

Ahern family mourn the shock death of Bertie's nephew (37)
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was in mourning today after his nephew Dylan died suddenly. The son of Mr Ahern's eldest brother Maurice was found dead in his north Dublin apartment on Saturday morning. The exact cause of death is still not clear and a post-mortem was due to be carried out today in order to provide the family with some answers. The Herald understands that he had been socialising with work colleagues the night before and was in good form.

Aged 37, Dylan was one of six children and like his father he was an avid runner. He was well known in the Dublin Central constituency and had canvassed for both his father and uncle during a series of election campaigns—most recently last June. Dylan grew up in Malahide and worked in the sports section of Dublin City Council.

His running club, Clonliffe Harriers, issued a statement yesterday in which it expressed "shock" at his sudden passing. A message from the club's secretary said: "It is with profound shock that we learnt of the tragic loss of a member of the Clonliffe family, Dylan Ahern, who died suddenly this morning. "Our prayers and thoughts are with Maurice and his family at this very sad time." As a mark of respect the club cancelled a Grand Prix Presentation Dinner that was due to take place last night and it has deferred its AGM which had been set for tomorrow night.

Former Lord Mayor Maurice and his wife Moira are said to be devastated. Maurice lost his seat in June's elections and afterwards he told the Herald that his children—Giles, Adam, Aimee, Murray, Clive and Dylan—had no interest in entering the political fray. "They wouldn't touch it with a barge poll," he said.

An ambulance crew from Dublin Fire Brigade arrived at the apartment in the Northwood development in Santry at lunchtime on Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was brought to Blanchardstown Hospital. Gardai have said that they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Today, Maurice Ahern's constituency colleague Cllr Christy Burke paid tribute to Dylan and offered his "deepest condolences to the family". "All our prayers and thoughts are with them at this incredibly tough time," he said. No funeral arrangements have been confirmed but it is thought that his removal will take place tomorrow, followed by Funeral Mass on Wednesday. It is the second tragedy for the former Taoiseach in a fortnight. Earlier this month, Nicky Byrne Snr (60), the father-in-law of Bertie Ahern's daughter Georgina, died of a heart attack.

Funeral of Bertie's nephew to be held tomorrow
Dylan Ahern (37)—the son of Bertie's eldest brother Maurice—was found dead at his north Dublin apartment on Saturday. He had been socialising the night before and is understood to have shown no signs of illness. A death notice placed in newspapers today says he was the beloved son of Maurice and Moira and "much loved brother of Giles, Adam, Aimee, Murray and Clive". The family have confirmed that he will be waked at their home in Malahide today, with removal tomorrow morning to St Sylvester's Church at 11.15am. His Funeral Mass will take place at 11.30am, followed immediately by burial in Fingal Cemetery.

Like his father, Dylan was an avid runner and was well-known in the Dublin Central constituency, where he had canvassed for both his father and uncle during a series of election campaigns—most recently in June.

Clonliffe Harriers issued a statement at the weekend in which it expressed "shock" at his sudden passing. A message from the club's secretary said: "It is with profound shock that we learnt of the tragic loss of a member of the Clonliffe family: Dylan Ahern who died suddenly this morning."

Mike Ahern
30 September 1942 — 5 October 2009
In the pirate radio days of the 1960s, Mike Ahern was among the UK's leading disc-jockeys, winning favour on both Radio Caroline North and South. But unlike many of the DJs, he did not make a successful transition to BBC Radio 1.

Mike Ahern was born in 1942 in the Liverpool suburb of Waterloo. He was at school with Kenny Everett and he was injured when Everett carelessly threw a brick over a wall and hit him. Ahern acted as compère for events at the Odeon Cinema's Saturday Club in Waterloo and then, in December 1963, he opened the Teenbeat club in a local dance studio. He booked Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, but the club was shut when residents complained of the noise. Ahern had a succession of day jobs, mostly working in a furniture store, but he preferred his evening work, when he would present shows at local venues for the promoter, Brian Kelly, and also, occasionally, he would work at the Cavern. In 1964, he applied to join the pirate ship Radio Caroline and told them in his CV that he was the best DJ in the world. His audacity won him an audition and then a regular spot on Radio Caroline North. He became very popular and was then moved to Radio Caroline South, where he took over from Keith Skues.

"Mike was a very good choice for the mid-morning show," Skues recalls. "He had excellent presentation and he knew how to pick records." Indeed: his signature tune was the highly distinctive "Buckeye" from Johnny and the Hurricanes. Ahern thought that the recent film, The Boat That Rocked, painted a blissful picture of life on board. They did not have a chef and Ahern was once dismissed, but soon reinstated, for making a bacon sandwich at 10pm. Sometimes, he would leave the boat by climbing down a 40ft rope ladder in a storm.

Coming on shore, Ahern was one of the first presenters of New Faces in 1966 and he was one of the initial DJs at the launch of Radio 1 in September 1967. He co-presented Top Gear with Pete Drummond, and although he performed competently, the BBC decided to stay with one presenter and he became the first Radio 1 DJ to be dismissed.

Ahern moved to Australia and worked successfully on radio stations in Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne. Returning to the UK in 1988, he worked for a number of BBC stations and also for Capital Gold. Earlier this year, he was featured in Johnnie Walker's Radio 2 programme, Pirate BBC Essex. Michael Ahern, disc jockey: born Liverpool 30 September 1942; married (divorced, two children); died Norwich 5 October 2009

Ahern remembers late son Dylan as 'beautiful dreamer'
FAMILY STILL AWAIT CAUSE OF DEATH
'A beautiful dreamer' is how former councillor and Malahide resident Maurice Ahern described his son Dylan, who recently died suddenly at his Santry apartment. Poetry, fashion, a love of history and politics, an active interest in sport and a love of ' the big occasion' were some of the interests that defined the 37-year-old, according to his heart-broken father. The two men went running together just two days before Dylan was found dead lying on his bed at his Santry home by his flatmate.

'It has been awful — not easy at all. It is not the natural order of things for a father to bury his son,' Maurice Ahern told the Fingal Independent. On the Friday before he died, Dylan was to visit the family home in Malahide where his mother had promised him a steak dinner in return for repairing a porcelain figure in the house — a task his father says he was skilled at. But he rang that day and said his plans had changed and he was going out to a fashion show with two friends. He attended the show and then a nightclub and said goodbye to his friends around 3.30am before returning home. It was the next morning, when his flatmate went into his room to see if he wanted to go for a run that he was discovered, still dressed on top of his bed, having tragically died sometime after getting home.

The family referred to Dylan as 'Didi' and his father remembers him simply as 'brilliant' and 'a lovely fella'. 'He loved a sense of occasion and big events like an All-Ireland final or a big family occasion. He would have loved his funeral actually — we had the Taoiseach down at the house saying a prayer over his coffin and President Mary McAleese rang the house personally,' Dylan's father said. According to his father, although Dylan had a great interest politics and helped in the running of Maurice and Bertie Ahern's political campaigns, he had no interest in running for office himself. Instead, he loved his job at Dublin City Council where he was working in the sports department. He had a number of qualifications from a business degree to a qualification in journalism and while he worked in the day at the council he studied to be a barrister at King's Inn by night. He wrote poetry, some of which was read at his funeral and the song chosen to sum him up by his family was 'Beautiful Dreamer'.
