History: The Wilderness Plantation was originally part of the estate owned by George Carter (of Oatlands Plantation). Carter sold 172 acres of his estate (the Bull Run Tract) in 1811 to Mathew Lee of New Jersey. Mr. Lee built The Wilderness upon this land. In 1894 Wiliam Hayden acquired the property and renamed the estate The Commons.
