SANKOFA'S SLAVERY DATA COLLECTION
Baxter & Hicks Ironworks
Location: Montgomery Co., TN
Constructed: ----
History: Robert Baxter and William Hicks were co-owners of a local ironworks in Montgomery Co. TN. It was the custom of a number of Montgomery Co. slave owners to hire out slaves to work there. The practice of hiring out was an alternative means of profiting from slave labor. Able-bodied and skilled slaves were sent to another place to work, while the slave owner would receive their wages. In essence, human property was not only bought, sold, and traded, but also "rented."
