Nicholls-Crook Plantation
Location: Woodruff; Greenville Co., SC
Founded: 1756
History: In 1793 Thomas Williamson, an early Scotch-Irish settler from Virginia, built his home on land originally granted in 1756. After Williamson died in 1813, Jesse Crook purchased the property and created a thousand-acre cotton plantation. Jesse's wife, Katie, was the daughter of Revolutionary War heroine Kate Berry. The property passed to their daughter, who was married to the county sheriff, George Nicholls. In the twentieth century the property belonged to the Bryson family of Woodruff, who continued to grow cotton.
