Hogback Plantation

Location: Fannin Co., GA (originally located in Gilmer Co.)
Founded: 1840

History: George Dickey, of Rutherford and Macon County, North Carolina, purchased the land in December of 1841. The land was in Gilmer County, Georgia, but later became Fannin. The Plantation was located on and around Hogback Mountain near Mineral Bluff. George and his wife Hannah were the first settlers in this area. George died in 1842 and his wife continued to farm the plantation. In 1850 Hannah Dickey only had 80 acres of land as the majority of the plantation had been divided among her children. Hannah is supposed to have taught some of her slaves how to read and write. Hannah died in 1868 and is buried next to her husband on Hogback Mountain next to her husband. The only other's buried in the cemetery are about 25 of their slaves. After the Civil War, many of the Dickey ex-slaves lived in Fannin Co., GA and Clay Co., NC.
